Getting to Canberra

Canberra is more accessible than its inland setting suggests. It sits just off the Hume Highway between Sydney and Melbourne, has its own airport minutes from the centre, and is an easy long weekend by road from the eastern capitals. For groups, the simplest option is to let someone else drive.

Canberra sits just off the Hume Highway. From Sydney it is about 290 km and three hours via the Hume and the Federal Highway; from Melbourne about 660 km and seven hours; from Brisbane around 1,200 km, usually broken over two days or flown.

Canberra Airport is about eight minutes from the city centre, with direct flights from Sydney (around 55 minutes), Melbourne (about an hour), Brisbane (about 90 minutes), Adelaide and the Gold Coast.
