Rail Corridor Heritage
From abandoned railway to world-class trail
The Murwillumbah line once carried freight and passengers across the green hills of Northern NSW — then sat silent for two decades after the last train in 2004.
The 24-kilometre Tweed section of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail opened in 2023, reclaiming the corridor for cyclists, walkers and horse riders. The 30-kilometre Casino-to-Lismore section followed, and when the remaining stages link up, the trail will stretch a full 132 kilometres from Murwillumbah to Casino, linking the Tweed, Byron, Lismore and Richmond Valley regions.
It's sustainable tourism at its best: heritage preserved, communities reconnected, and one of the most scenic cycling experiences anywhere in Australia.
