Outback Queensland

Hughenden Tours

Muttaburrasaurus Country & Porcupine Gorge

On the Flinders Highway between Townsville and Mount Isa, Hughenden is a classic outback Queensland town with two great stories to tell — one written 100 million years ago, the other carved into sandstone over countless millennia. As home to the famous Muttaburrasaurus and the gateway to spectacular Porcupine Gorge, Hughenden anchors the eastern end of the Dinosaur Trail. Cooee Tours includes it on dinosaur and outback journeys, with time for both its fossil heritage and its dramatic natural scenery.

The Flinders Discovery Centre & Mutt

Hughenden's Flinders Discovery Centre is built around 'Hughie', a full-scale replica of a Muttaburrasaurus — one of Australia's most complete dinosaur skeletons, discovered in the district. The centre interprets the region's prehistory, from the ancient inland sea to the great plant-eating dinosaurs that roamed its shores.

Outside the town's Grand Hotel stands 'Mutt', a much-loved life-sized recreation that has become a Hughenden landmark. With a Cooee Tours guide, the story connects naturally to the marine fossils of Richmond and the land giants of Winton further along the trail.

Porcupine Gorge — Australia's Little Grand Canyon

About 60 kilometres north of Hughenden lies Porcupine Gorge National Park, often called 'Australia's Little Grand Canyon'. Here a deep sandstone chasm cuts through the savanna plain, its colourful layered walls protecting a green oasis of permanent waterholes and the striking sandstone formation known as the Pyramid.

It is a spectacular and unexpected sight in this dry country. Where time and access allow, Cooee Tours can include a Porcupine Gorge experience, and your guide explains the geology that created this remarkable landscape.

On the Flinders River

Hughenden sits on the Flinders River, Queensland's longest river, and grew as a railway and grazing town serving the surrounding Mitchell-grass downs. The wide main street, country pubs and easygoing welcome make it a comfortable and characterful outback stop.

The town also serves as a practical base for exploring the wider Flinders Shire, with its fossil heritage, gorge country and big outback skies. Increasingly, the district is also becoming a hub for renewable-energy projects — a new chapter in a long pastoral story.

Anchoring the Dinosaur Trail

Hughenden forms the third corner of Queensland's Dinosaur Trail, alongside Richmond and Winton. Together the three towns turn a long outback drive into a connected journey through deep time — and travelling them in sequence is the best way to appreciate the full story.

A guided coach journey removes the distances between the stops, leaving you free to enjoy the fossils, the gorge and the towns themselves. It is one of outback Australia's most distinctive touring experiences.
