Outback Queensland rewards a well-planned route — the distances are big and the highlights are spread across the interior, so a little sequencing goes a long way. These sample itineraries, refined over decades of Cooee touring, run from a first-timer's Central West loop to a Channel Country adventure. Treat them as a framework; we'll tailor the rest.

The classics

Sample itineraries

From a week in the Central West to a two-week grand loop.

5–7 days

Central West Classic

Longreach (Qantas, Stockman's Hall of Fame, Thomson River cruise) and Winton (Age of Dinosaurs, Waltzing Matilda, Lark Quarry), with Barcaldine and Ilfracombe along the way.

10–14 days

Grand Outback Loop

Add Charleville's Cosmos Centre, the Mulga Country and a southern return via Roma — the fullest sweep of the Central West and south.

Dinosaur focus

The Dinosaur Trail

Winton, Richmond and Hughenden with Lark Quarry — a 3–5 day fossil journey, easily paired with Longreach.

Adventure

Channel Country & Birdsville

The braided rivers, remote tracks and the famous Birdsville pub — a 4WD or guided adventure for the far west.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I need for Outback Queensland?

A focused Longreach–Winton trip works over 5–7 days; a fuller Central West loop adding Charleville and Barcaldine needs 10–14 days; and a Channel Country or Gulf adventure more again. Distances are vast, so allow more time than the map suggests.

What is the classic Outback Queensland itinerary?

The classic is the Legendary Longreach & Winton loop — Qantas and the Stockman's Hall of Fame at Longreach, dinosaurs and Waltzing Matilda at Winton, and the towns in between. See our Legendary Longreach & Winton tour.

Can I do a self-drive itinerary?

Yes — the main loop is fully sealed and suits a 2WD. See our sample outback itinerary. For the remote Channel Country and Gulf, a 4WD or a guided trip is the way to go.

Is it better to fly in or drive from Brisbane?

Both work. Driving from Brisbane is a two-to-three-day journey each way; flying into Longreach saves those days. Many travellers fly one way and tour the other, or simply take a guided coach tour from Brisbane. See our getting there guide.
