5 Days in Cairns: Reef to Daintree

Five days is the sweet spot for the Tropical North — long enough for the reef, Kuranda, the world's oldest rainforest and a tablelands waterfall circuit, without a single rushed morning. One Cairns base, five very different days.

The plan, day by day

Day 01

Cairns city & the Esplanade

Settle in at street level: the Esplanade boardwalk and saltwater lagoon, the Botanic Gardens at Edge Hill, and the night markets for dinner. Save your legs — the big days are coming.

Day 02

The Great Barrier Reef

A full day on the water: Green Island, Fitzroy Island or an outer reef pontoon, with snorkelling, glass-bottom boats and optional intro dives. Compare the options in our Great Barrier Reef tours guide — and keep this day swappable as your weather buffer.

Day 03

Kuranda: Skyrail up, Scenic Railway down

Over the canopy on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway with the Barron Falls lookout stops, the markets and river walks of Kuranda village, then down the range on the hand-carved Kuranda Scenic Railway. Details in the Kuranda full day tour guide.

Day 04

Mossman Gorge, the Daintree & Cape Tribulation

North along one of Australia's great coastal drives to where the world's oldest rainforest meets the reef. Walk the boardwalks at Mossman Gorge, cross the Daintree River by cable ferry with a crocodile-spotting cruise, and stand on the beach at Cape Tribulation where two World Heritage areas touch.

This is a guided-tour day — see Daintree & Cape Tribulation tours and our Daintree guide for the full picture.

Day 05

Atherton Tablelands waterfall circuit

Up the range for a different Tropical North: rolling green dairy country, crater lakes and the famous waterfall circuit — Millaa Millaa, Zillie and Ellinjaa Falls on one loop road, with a swim at Lake Eacham on the way home. Curtain Fig Tree near Yungaburra is the essential detour.

Plan it with our Atherton Tablelands tours page and the tablelands waterfalls guide.

Practical notes

  • Sequence logic: reef sits early as your weather buffer; the two driving-heavy days (Daintree, tablelands) bookend the trip's back half so no two boat or bus days stack together.
  • Stinger season: roughly November to May on the coast; operators supply stinger suits, and the tablelands' freshwater swimming is stinger-free year round.
  • Best months: June to October for dry days and calm seas; the waterfalls are at their thundering best just after the wet, March to May.
  • Groups: Cooee Tours can run all five days as one private charter booking — coach, cruises and entries arranged together.

5 day Cairns questions

Can you do the Daintree as a day trip from Cairns?

Yes. The Daintree and Cape Tribulation make a long but very doable day from Cairns — about two hours' drive each way including the Daintree River cable ferry crossing. Guided day tours handle the driving and pack in Mossman Gorge, a river cruise and Cape Tribulation beach.

Which Atherton Tablelands waterfalls should I see?

The classic circuit takes in Millaa Millaa Falls — the most photographed waterfall in Queensland — along with Zillie and Ellinjaa Falls on the same loop road, with Lake Eacham's crater lake a popular swimming stop on the way back.

Do I need a car for this itinerary?

No. Days one to three work on foot and with local transfers, and the Daintree and tablelands days both run as guided tours from Cairns. Groups can also have Cooee Tours arrange the whole five days as a private charter — call 0409 661 342.
