A sand island like no other
K'gari, long known as Fraser Island, is the largest sand island on earth and a UNESCO World Heritage Area. Remarkably, tall rainforest grows directly out of the sand, alongside more than a hundred freshwater lakes.
The highlights
- Lake McKenzie — a perched lake of startlingly clear water and white silica sand.
- Seventy-Five Mile Beach — the island's ocean-side sand highway.
- Maheno shipwreck — a rusting hull half-buried on the beach.
- Eli Creek — a fast, clear freshwater creek you can float down.
- Central Station rainforest — towering trees rooted in sand.
Dingo-safe and respectful
K'gari is home to dingoes (wongari), and visitors must follow dingo-safe guidelines: never feed them, keep close to children, and store food securely. The island is the Country of the Butchulla people — tread lightly and follow signage.
