Three days is the minimum time to begin understanding what makes the Sunshine Coast genuinely extraordinary β and the maximum time many visitors have. This itinerary uses all three days precisely: Noosa on day one, the hinterland on day two, and a third day you choose based on what you loved most.
Start the Itinerary Planning Tips FirstThis plan is built around a Wednesday or Saturday arrival β because Day 1 includes Eumundi Markets, which run on those two days only. If you're arriving on a different day, Day 1 and Day 2 swap: start with the hinterland, then do Noosa on your second day and skip Eumundi to the following Wednesday or Saturday market if your schedule allows. Both work; the market day version is the one we'd choose.
The itinerary assumes you're based on the Sunshine Coast for all three days β Noosa, Mooloolaba, or anywhere in between. If you're travelling from Brisbane for day trips rather than staying, see our Sunshine Coast guided day tour β we collect you from your Brisbane hotel and cover the day's highlights in a single expertly guided day.
Our guided Sunshine Coast day tour from Brisbane covers Eumundi Markets, Noosa National Park, Hastings Street, and Montville hinterland in a single expertly timed day. Hotel pickup included.
Wednesday or Saturday recommended Β· Start early Β· Plan to stay for dinner
Eumundi is 25 minutes south of Noosa and the Wednesday/Saturday markets open at 7am (Saturday) and 8am (Wednesday). Arriving in the first hour is not optional β it's the difference between the Eumundi that locals love and the Eumundi that tourists endure. The best produce stalls sell out. The best parking is still available. The live music has just started and the light through the heritage buildings is beautiful.
600+ stalls. Handmade, homegrown, and locally produced β artisan cheese, fresh-milled macadamia oil, sourdough from a baker who's been at the same stall for twenty years, tropical fruit jams, local honey, and enough clothing and homewares to make a morning of it even if you buy nothing.
25 minutes north from Eumundi to Noosa Heads. Park at the eastern end of Hastings Street (at the national park entrance, not the beach car park β the distinction matters for the walk). The car park fills by 10am on weekends; if you find it full, the Noosa Heads village streets have paid parking from which the park entrance is 5 minutes on foot.
The 2.7km coastal track from Noosa Heads to Hells Gates lookout is the single finest short coastal walk in Queensland β and the experience that most guests on our Sunshine Coast tours name as the highlight of their visit. The track runs through paperbark forest, wildflower heath, and clifftop sections above the open Pacific, with resident koalas resting in the trees alongside the path at virtually every visit.
Do not rush this walk. The koalas, the sea eagles, the glimpses of ocean through the paperbark trunks, and the moment Hells Gates lookout appears β with the full Pacific spread below and the headland curving south β all require stopping time. Allow 90 minutes minimum at a slow, observant pace.
Return along the coastal track (or via the slightly inland return path) to Hastings Street β one of Australia's finest beachfront dining strips. No chains, no franchises, no fast food permitted on this street; the result is a kilometre of independent restaurants, cafΓ©s, and shops that reflect decades of deliberate curation.
For a relaxed cafΓ© lunch: Noosa Beach House, CafΓ© Le Monde, or Sails Restaurant for outdoor tables with beach views. For something more substantial: Locale or Bistro C for modern Australian cooking at the quieter end of the street. For quick and excellent: the fish and chips at Noosa Beach House Takeaway eaten on the beach itself.
The beach behind Hastings Street is one of Queensland's finest β calm, turquoise, and protected inside the headland from the open Pacific swell. The water is warmer and more sheltered than almost any other famous Queensland beach. Stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, and surf lessons are all available from the beach hire stands.
The Noosa River mouth at the western end of the beach creates a particularly calm swimming area that suits children and nervous swimmers. In whale season (JuneβOctober), the headland above the beach is an excellent free vantage point for humpback sightings in the late afternoon.
A 5-minute drive from the beach to the Noosa Spit β a grassy reserve at the mouth of the Noosa River where the river meets the sea. The walk along the spit as the afternoon light turns golden delivers a view of the river, the headland, and the anchored boats that is quintessential Noosa. Dolphins frequently patrol the river mouth in the late afternoon.
Day 1 evening in Noosa deserves a considered dinner. Thomas Corner at Noosa Junction is exceptional value for its calibre. Wasabi Restaurant & Bar on Quamby Place is the town's most respected Japanese fine dining. For the Noosa institution experience, Gaston on Hastings Street for classic French brasserie fare has been excellent for longer than most visitors can remember.
Alternative: if you'd rather eat somewhere quieter and more local, Noosa Junction (a 10-minute walk up from Hastings Street) has a more relaxed selection with lower prices and a predominantly local crowd.
Full hinterland day Β· Any day of the week Β· Earlier start recommended for the falls
Drive directly to Montville (40 minutes from Noosa, 30 from Mooloolaba) and begin with breakfast at one of the range cafΓ©s before the village fills with day visitors. The Montville CafΓ© and Artist's Palette are both reliable choices with the warm, slightly misty morning character that the hinterland delivers in almost every season.
The drive up from the coast is itself a highlight β the range rises from the flat coastal plain in a series of ascending bends, each one revealing more of the coast below until, at the escarpment edge, the entire Sunshine Coast strip and the Pacific appear at once. Don't rush the drive.
Montville's single heritage main street of tin-roofed shops is at its best in the morning, before the weekend coach tours arrive and the car park fills. The Gallery Walk has rotating exhibitions of genuinely high-quality regional art. The chocolate and fudge makers, the homemade jam specialists, and the small-batch condiment producers can all justify extended browsing.
Walk to the escarpment lookout at the southern end of the main street β the view faces east across the entire Sunshine Coast coastal plain to the ocean beyond. On clear winter days, the Glass House Mountains rise from the plain to the south in a geological panorama that makes the drive up from the coast feel completely logical.
15 minutes from Montville, the Kondalilla Falls walk (2.7km return) descends through one of the finest stands of ancient hoop pine and subtropical rainforest in Southeast Queensland. The forest is cool, dark, and almost completely silent β the contrast with the beach 20km away is one of the Sunshine Coast's most dramatic and most overlooked experiences.
The falls themselves β a 90-metre cascade into a natural rock pool β are at their most powerful after summer rain. In the dry season the flow reduces but the pool is better for swimming. The rock pool at the base is suitable for swimming from approximately October through April; the water is cold and clear year-round.
Drive north from Kondalilla to Flaxton (5 minutes) or Mapleton (10 minutes) for lunch. Flaxton Gardens has an excellent restaurant with cellar door access to their estate wines β the veranda overlooking the garden is one of the hinterland's finest lunch settings. Mapleton has two good cafΓ©s on the main road with simpler food and better coffee.
If the Wine Tour itinerary appeals, this is where our guided Sunshine Coast Wine Tour takes its first cellar door stop β Flaxton Gardens is a regular feature on the wine tour route.
π· Explore our Sunshine Coast Wine ToursMapleton is the northernmost of the range villages β quieter and less visited than Montville, with a strong local character and two of the range's best lookout points. Mapleton Falls (5-minute walk from the national park car park on Obi Obi Road) delivers a dramatic view of a 120-metre cascade and the full Obi Obi Valley below. On clear days this lookout is one of the range's finest photography spots.
The Mapleton village itself has a beautiful heritage teahouse (Mapleton Tavern is the hinterland's most atmospheric pub) and a small but excellent arts collective. This is the range before it became a weekend destination β and that sense of unhurried local life is worth savouring.
20 minutes south from Mapleton to Maleny β the range's most community-minded town and the holder of what many visitors consider the Sunshine Coast's finest view. The lookout on McCarthy Road above Maleny places the Glass House Mountains β eleven ancient volcanic plugs rising from the flat coastal plain β directly before you in the afternoon light. On a clear day this view is genuinely extraordinary and stops conversations mid-sentence.
Maleny Dairies at the northern edge of town sells exceptional artisan cheese and dairy direct from the farm β the flavoured milks alone (particularly the chilli chocolate) are worth the stop. Maple Street through the town centre has strong independent shops, good coffee, and the art cooperative that represents some of the hinterland's most interesting creative voices.
The drive from Maleny down to the coast takes 30β40 minutes and delivers the same spectacular coastal panorama in reverse as the morning drive up. Return to your accommodation and dinner at your base town. If staying in Mooloolaba, The Wharf precinct has excellent dining with river views. If in Noosa, Noosa Junction for the more local dining experience.
Alternatively: if the hinterland day has made you want to stay up here, Montville and Maleny have small but good evening dining options for those willing to drive back to the coast after dark on the winding range road β which is perfectly fine but requires confidence on the descent.
Choose based on what you loved most in Days 1 & 2
Day 3 is intentionally left open because the right choice depends on what resonated most across the first two days. If the national park walk and natural character of the Sunshine Coast moved you, the Glass House Mountains are the natural next step β the region's most dramatic geological experience, an hour south. If you want more time on the coast, Mooloolaba and the southern beaches offer a completely different coastal character to Noosa. If wildlife was the highlight of any stop, Australia Zoo near Beerwah delivers one of the country's finest wildlife experiences a single hour's drive away.
For lovers of geology, nature & dramatic landscapes
Eleven ancient volcanic plugs β remnants of a 26-million-year-old lava field β rising from the flat coastal plain south of Caloundra. The Drive and the walking tracks around Mount Tibrogargan, Mount Beerwah, and the smaller peaks take a full day to explore properly. Our guided Glass House Mountains tour from Brisbane includes commentary on the volcanic geology and the Kabi Kabi cultural significance of these peaks.
Self-drive: follow the Glass House Mountains Tourist Drive south from Caloundra. The Lookout Road summit near Beerburrum has the finest free panoramic view. Allow the full day.
ποΈ Book our Glass House Mountains Tour βFor beach lovers who want a different coastal character
Mooloolaba is the Sunshine Coast's most animated beach town β long patrolled beach, a vibrant esplanade, Underwater World (SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast Aquarium), and dolphin cruises on the Mooloolah River. The southern drive from Mooloolaba through Coolum, Peregian, and to Caloundra's four distinct beaches (each with a completely different character) can fill a pleasurable full day at an entirely different pace to Noosa.
Tallebudgera Creek at Palm Beach β a tidal freshwater creek flowing between sandbanks into the sea β is the Sunshine Coast's most beautiful and least-known swimming spot and worth the 20-minute southern drive.
π Full Sunshine Coast Activities Guide βFor wildlife enthusiasts & families with children
Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo at Beerwah β one kilometre from the Glass House Mountains β is 45 minutes south of Noosa and combines naturally with a Sunshine Coast stay. 600+ animals, the legendary Crikey Stage crocodile shows, Africa Savannah with cheetahs and giraffes, and a Wildlife Hospital open to public viewing. A full day. Plan to arrive at 9am opening and leave at 4pm.
Entry is $59 adult online. Our guided Australia Zoo day tour from Brisbane includes entry and hotel pickup β if you're travelling from Brisbane for the day rather than based on the Sunshine Coast, the tour is significantly better value than self-drive plus entry.
π¦ Book our Australia Zoo Day Tour βArrive Tuesday evening so your three full days include a Wednesday (Eumundi Markets) and the weekend. This gives you the market experience without committing to a Saturday-only schedule. If you can only do Saturday, the Saturday market is larger and more atmospheric but considerably busier.
A hire car is strongly recommended for a self-guided 3-day Sunshine Coast visit β the hinterland villages, Glass House Mountains, and the southern beaches are not practically accessible by public transport. If you're doing all three days on guided tours from Brisbane, no car is needed. Noosa has a good bus network for the beach area specifically.
Noosa is the most expensive base β premium but beautiful. Mooloolaba is more affordable with similar beach quality. Caloundra is best value and well-positioned for Day 3 Glass House Mountains. The hinterland (Montville B&Bs or Maleny retreats) is a beautiful option for nature-focused visitors who don't need daily beach access.
SPF 50+ sunscreen (Queensland sun is intense year-round). Proper walking shoes for Kondalilla Falls and the national park track. Swimwear for the beach, the falls pool (OctβApr), and the Noosa River. A light layer for hinterland mornings, which can be surprisingly cool year-round. Download the Translink app and the Queensland National Parks app before arriving.
Accommodation: $120β300/night (Mooloolaba mid-range), $200β500+ (Noosa). Meals: $15β25 cafΓ©, $40β80 restaurant. Eumundi Markets, all beaches, all walking tracks: free. Hire car: $60β90/day. Australia Zoo: $59 adult (or $179 on our guided tour including entry and hotel pickup). Budget $200β350 per person per day all-in for a comfortable visit.
Queensland National Parks (trail maps for Noosa and Kondalilla). Translink Journey Planner (Noosa buses). OpenTable or Fork (restaurant bookings β essential on weekends in Noosa). The Bureau of Meteorology app (Queensland weather can change quickly β particularly important before the Kondalilla Falls walk).
The Sunshine Coast's subtropical climate makes this itinerary viable year-round β but each season changes the experience meaningfully.
Our honest recommendation. The humidity drops sharply from March, temperatures are perfect (22β26Β°C), the ocean is still warm from summer, and the hinterland is at its most atmospheric β morning mist in the valleys, extraordinary afternoon light on the range, and wildflowers beginning in the coastal heath. Shoulder season pricing on accommodation and fewer crowds than summer or school holidays. If you have flexibility, choose April or May.
Counterintuitively one of the best times to do this itinerary. Spectacularly clear days, crisp mornings on the hinterland range, and the full Glass House Mountains panorama visible without haze. The national park walk is cooler and more comfortable; the Kondalilla Falls walk is beautiful in the winter light. Whale watching season (JuneβOctober) adds an extraordinary optional experience. Ocean is cool (19β21Β°C) but the rest of the itinerary is unaffected.
The beach is at its best in summer β warm ocean, long days, Hastings Street at its most vibrant. However, afternoon thunderstorms can disrupt the hinterland walk on Day 2, and the Eumundi Markets can be uncomfortable in the midday heat. Do the national park walk and Kondalilla Falls as early as possible (before 10am if you can) and build beach time into the afternoon when the storms typically arrive and pass. Book accommodation 3β4 months ahead for the Christmas and school holiday peak.
Spring is excellent for this itinerary β wildflowers on the coastal heath and hinterland range add colour to both Day 1 and Day 2, whale watching extends through October, and the ocean warms from November to pleasant swimming temperature. The Noosa Triathlon (October) and Noosa Eat & Drink Festival (May, technically autumn) are the two biggest Noosa events of the year β book well ahead if your dates coincide with either.
Your accommodation choice affects both your daily drive times and the overall character of the visit. Here are the three main options, honestly assessed for this specific itinerary.
Best for: couples, food lovers, first-time visitors who want the full experience
Best for: families, first-timers, anyone wanting value with good access
Best for: nature lovers, couples who want quiet, wine tour participants
