Why Skydive in New Zealand?

New Zealand is internationally renowned as one of the world's premier skydiving destinations, and for good reason. This spectacular country offers a unique combination of breathtaking scenery, professional operators with impeccable safety records, and the opportunity to jump from higher altitudes than almost anywhere else on Earth.

Unlike many countries where maximum jump heights are restricted to 12,000-15,000 feet, New Zealand allows tandem skydives from up to 18,500 feet (and even 20,000 feet at select locations). This means more freefall time - up to 75-85 seconds of pure adrenaline - and more time to soak in the jaw-dropping views of mountains, lakes, coastlines, and national parks stretching out beneath you.

The diversity of landscapes available for skydiving in New Zealand is unmatched. Jump over Queenstown's Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu, freefall toward the turquoise waters of Lake Taupo with volcanic peaks on the horizon, plummet toward Franz Josef Glacier's ancient ice, or dive above the golden beaches of Abel Tasman National Park. Each location offers a completely different visual experience, all equally spectacular.

New Zealand was also the birthplace of commercial tandem skydiving, with NZONE in Queenstown pioneering the industry in the late 1980s. This heritage means decades of experience, world-class training standards, and an established culture of safety and professionalism. Whether you're a first-time jumper or an experienced skydiver, you'll find expert instruction, top-quality equipment, and crews who genuinely love what they do.

What to Expect: Your Skydiving Experience

Tandem skydiving is designed to be accessible to everyone - no previous experience required. You'll be securely harnessed to an experienced instructor who handles all the technical aspects, allowing you to simply enjoy the incredible rush and views.

The Complete Experience

1. Check-In & Briefing (30 minutes): Arrive at the skydiving center where you'll check in, sign waivers, and receive a safety briefing from your instructor. They'll explain body position during freefall, exit technique, and what to expect throughout the jump. This is your chance to ask any questions.

2. Gear Up (15 minutes): Your instructor will fit you with a harness, goggles, and any necessary gear. You'll also be weighed (accurate weight is essential for safety). Optional video and photo packages can be selected at this stage.

3. The Scenic Flight (15-20 minutes): Board the aircraft and enjoy breathtaking views during the climb to altitude. This flight is spectacular in itself - you'll see the landscape spreading out beneath you as you climb higher and higher. The cabin is usually buzzing with excitement and nervous energy!

4. The Exit (The Hardest Part): Your instructor will securely attach you via your harness. When your turn comes, you'll shuffle to the open door, and on the count of three... you jump! That moment of leaving the plane is intense - many people say it's scarier than the actual freefall.

5. Freefall (45-85 seconds): Experience pure exhilaration as you plummet at up to 200km/h! The freefall feels more like flying than falling - the wind resistance creates a floating sensation. Enjoy incredible 360-degree views as your camera operator (if booked) captures every moment. Smile for the camera!

6. Parachute Opening: At around 5,000 feet, your instructor deploys the parachute. The sudden deceleration is noticeable but gentle. Once the chute opens, everything becomes peaceful and quiet - a complete contrast to the rushing wind of freefall.

7. Canopy Flight (5-7 minutes): Glide gently back to earth, soaking in the incredible views. Your instructor may perform some gentle turns or spirals. This is when you can really appreciate the scenery and reflect on what you've just accomplished.

8. Landing: Your instructor will guide you into a soft landing (usually requiring you to lift your legs for a gentle seated landing). Ground crew will help you up, unclip your harness, and congratulations - you're now officially a skydiver!

9. Celebration & Media: Collect your photos and videos (available immediately at most operators), receive your certificate, and bask in the post-jump adrenaline high. Most people can't stop smiling for hours afterward!
