AFRICA'S ICONIC ANIMALS

The Big Five

Named by big-game hunters as the five most difficult animals to track on foot — today they represent Africa's greatest wildlife prize for photographers and nature lovers. Our safaris offer exceptional Big Five sighting rates.

Lion
Best seen: Masai Mara & Serengeti. Africa has around 20,000 lions remaining in the wild.
Leopard
The most elusive of the five. Often spotted in trees at dawn. Kruger & Sabi Sands are best.
Elephant
Chobe (Botswana) has the world's highest concentration — up to 130,000 animals.
Rhinoceros
Critically endangered. Best seen in South Africa's private reserves and Kenya's Ol Pejeta.
Cape Buffalo
Known as the "Black Death" — notoriously unpredictable. Found in vast herds across the Mara.
WHAT TO EXPERIENCE

Africa's Greatest Experiences

These are the moments our Africa guests talk about for the rest of their lives.

Dawn Game Drives

In an open 4WD before the sun rises, you'll watch Africa's predators finishing a night hunt, elephant herds moving to water, and the Mara or Serengeti plains wake up in extraordinary golden light. Nothing in travel compares.

Hot Air Balloon Safari

Float silently over the Serengeti at dawn in a hot air balloon as wildebeest herds ripple across the plains below. Champagne breakfast in the bush follows the landing. A once-in-a-lifetime experience that photography can barely do justice.

The Great Wildebeest Migration

Over 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebra and 500,000 Thomson's gazelle move in a continuous clockwise circuit through the Serengeti and Masai Mara ecosystems — following the rain and the fresh grass it brings. It never stops. Every month offers something extraordinary.

The migration's most dramatic chapter — the Mara River crossings — occurs July to October, when enormous herds plunge into crocodile-filled waters in a chaos of noise, spray, and survival. This is one of the most sought-after wildlife experiences on earth.

TRAVEL PLANNING

Best Time to Visit Africa from Australia

Africa is a year-round destination — but each region has a clear sweet spot for wildlife and weather.

☀️

East Africa — June to October

Dry Season · Peak Safari

Kenya and Tanzania's dry season offers the best game viewing — animals congregate around water sources, vegetation is lower and more open, and skies are clear. July to October delivers the Mara River crossings. This aligns with Australia's school holidays — book 12 months ahead for peak migration departures.

🌿

Green Season — January to March

Calving Season · Fewer Crowds

The green season (January–March) is the Serengeti's calving season — hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves born in weeks, drawing cheetah, lion, and hyena in extraordinary numbers. Lush green landscapes, lower prices, and far fewer tourists. One of Africa's most underrated travel windows.

🇿🇦

South Africa — May to September

Dry Winter · Best Kruger Viewing

South Africa's winter (May to September) is the best time for Kruger safari — dry, cool conditions, bare vegetation, and thirsty animals concentrated around waterholes. Cape Town's weather is mild year-round. Whale watching at Hermanus peaks June to November, aligning beautifully with Australia's winter break.

🌙

Morocco — March to May & Sept–Nov

Spring & Autumn · Ideal Conditions

Morocco's shoulder seasons are ideal — spring (March–May) brings wildflowers to the Atlas Mountains and comfortable temperatures in the Sahara (warm days, cool nights). Autumn (September–November) is equally pleasant. Summer temperatures in the Sahara regularly exceed 45°C — not recommended for most travellers.

GUEST STORIES

What Our Guests Say About Africa

★★★★★

"We saw a leopard with a kill in a tree, two lion brothers taking down a buffalo, and a cheetah with cubs — all in one morning in the Masai Mara. I have been on three previous safaris and never seen anything close to this. Cooee Tours positioned us perfectly. The guide was extraordinary."

David & Carolyn F. — Sunshine Coast, QLD · Kenya Safari Classic 2025
★★★★★

"The hot air balloon over the Serengeti at dawn — I genuinely cannot find the words. Below us, wildebeest stretched as far as we could see in every direction. Champagne in the bush afterwards. Then a lion pride 30 metres from the vehicle. Africa is not like any other travel."

Michelle T. — Brisbane, QLD · Tanzania Grand Safari 2025
★★★★★

"The Sahara night was the most extraordinary experience of my 65 years of travel. Absolute silence, the dunes glowing silver under a full moon, and the Milky Way so bright it cast shadows. Our guide made coffee at 3am and we sat outside the tent in silence for an hour. Morocco is magic."

COMMON QUESTIONS

Africa Tours FAQ

How long does an Africa tour from Australia take?

Most Africa tours from Australia run 14–21 days. Safari-only tours in Kenya or Tanzania are typically 12–16 days on the ground. A combined safari-and-Cape Town itinerary runs 16–20 days. Given the significant travel time from Brisbane (18–24 hours with connections), we always recommend at least 14 days to make the journey truly worthwhile.

What is the best time for a Kenya or Tanzania safari?

The dry season (June to October) is generally best for game viewing — animals congregate around water sources, vegetation is lower, and skies are clear. July to October brings the Mara River crossings. The green season (January–March) is the calving season in the southern Serengeti — extraordinarily active predator behaviour, lush landscapes, and far fewer tourists. Both seasons are remarkable for different reasons.

How much does an Africa safari from Australia cost?

Our Africa tours start from $4,999 per person (land only). Kenya or Tanzania safaris typically range from $6,000–$10,000 per person land only, depending on accommodation standard. With international flights from Brisbane, most Africa tours range from $9,000–$18,000 per person. Luxury private safari packages (Okavango Delta, Singita Serengeti, &Beyond) vary widely based on lodge selection and duration.

What is the Big Five?

The Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and Cape buffalo — are Africa's five most iconic safari animals, historically named as the most challenging to hunt on foot. Today they represent the goal of every wildlife photographer. On our Kenya and Tanzania safaris, Big Five sightings are very common. Kruger National Park in South Africa also offers excellent year-round Big Five opportunities.

When is the Great Wildebeest Migration?

The Great Migration is a year-round cycle — 1.5 million wildebeest move continuously through the Serengeti ecosystem. The most dramatic event is the Mara River crossings, which typically occur July to October. January to March offers the calving season in the southern Serengeti — equally spectacular predator activity. There is no bad time to safari in the Mara or Serengeti, but migration season departures book up to 12 months in advance.

What type of accommodation is used on safari?

We offer options from classic tented safari camps (comfortable permanent tents with en-suite bathrooms, beds, and full lighting — not basic camping) through to luxury lodges with swimming pools, fine dining, and spa facilities. All our standard safari accommodation offers genuine bush immersion. Luxury options include some of the world's most celebrated properties such as those operated by &Beyond, Singita, and Wilderness Safaris.

Do Australians need vaccinations for Africa?

Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended for Kenya, Tanzania, and Botswana. A Yellow Fever certificate may be required if you're transiting through certain African countries. Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccinations are recommended. Consult your GP or a travel medicine clinic at least 6 weeks before departure. Cooee Tours provides a full health briefing document with every booking.

Can I combine an African safari with other destinations?

Absolutely. Popular combinations include Kenya safari plus Zanzibar beach, Tanzania safari plus Pemba Island, South Africa plus Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe/Zambia), and Morocco plus Portugal or Spain. Our custom itinerary service connects any combination of destinations around your interests, schedule, and budget.

Is Africa safe for Australian tourists?

The safari destinations we operate in — Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Botswana and Morocco — are safe and well-established tourist destinations. DFAT (Smartraveller) rates most areas we visit as 'Exercise Normal Safety' or 'Exercise a High Degree of Caution'. Our guides are highly experienced, we use only reputable in-country operators, and our 24/7 support team monitors all advisories throughout your tour.

Does Cooee Tours offer custom Africa itineraries?

Yes — custom Africa itineraries are our speciality. Our Brisbane-based Africa specialists design fully bespoke safaris around your travel dates, interests, budget and accommodation preferences. A honeymoon private camp in the Okavango Delta, a photography safari with a professional wildlife photographer guide, a family safari with child-appropriate activities — we build it all from scratch.
