    Common Questions

    Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions travellers ask most.

Do I need a visa to visit Australia?
Almost all visitors need a visa or travel authority before arriving. New Zealand citizens are the main exception — they receive a Special Category Visa on arrival. Most visitors apply for an ETA, eVisitor, or Tourist Visa depending on their passport.
How far in advance should I apply?
ETAs and eVisitors are often granted within minutes. Tourist visas can take a few days to several weeks. For student, partner, or skilled visas, apply months in advance. Always apply well before your planned travel date.
Can I work on a Tourist Visa?
No. Tourist visas do not permit paid work in Australia. If you want to work, you'll need a Working Holiday Visa, Student Visa (limited hours), or an appropriate work visa sponsored by an employer.
What is SkillSelect and how does it work?
SkillSelect is an online system for skilled migration applications. You submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and are ranked against other applicants by a points score based on age, English, qualifications, and work experience. The highest-scored candidates receive invitations to apply.
Can I extend my visa while in Australia?
Some visas can be extended or you can apply for a new visa while in Australia, known as an onshore application. Others require you to leave and apply offshore. Check your specific visa conditions on the Home Affairs website.
What happens if I overstay my visa?
Overstaying is a serious breach. You may be detained and removed from Australia, and a three-year re-entry ban can apply. Always be aware of your visa expiry date and apply for an extension before it lapses.
