    Application Requirements

Most Australian visas are applied for online. Here's what to expect from the general application process.

    Step 01
    Determine Your Visa Type

Use the eligibility checker above, or the Department of Home Affairs visa finder at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au. Confirm you meet all requirements before starting an application.

    Step 02
    Use the Official Channel

For ETAs: download the free Australian ETA app (Apple/Google Play). For all other visas: create an ImmiAccount at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au. Never use unofficial third-party websites.

    Step 03
    Gather Your Documents

Collect all required documents (see list opposite). Ensure everything is certified and translated into English where required. Incomplete applications cause significant delays.

    Step 04
    Lodge & Pay

Complete the online form, upload documents, and pay the visa application charge. You'll receive a TRN (Transaction Reference Number) — keep this safe. ETAs are usually confirmed by email almost immediately.

    Step 05
    Verify Your Visa (VEVO)

Australian visas are 100% electronic — there is no stamp or label in your passport. Check your visa conditions at any time using VEVO (Visa Entitlement Verification Online) at border.gov.au/VEVO. Always check before travel.

    Australia Visa — FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about Australian visas and immigration.

Almost all visitors require a visa or electronic travel authority before arriving in Australia. New Zealand passport holders are the main exception — they receive a Special Category Visa on arrival. All other nationalities must apply before departure. Australia issues no traditional visa-on-arrival — all visas are electronic. Most tourists apply for an ETA (subclass 601), eVisitor (651), or Visitor Visa (600) depending on their passport nationality.
The Australian Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, subclass 601) is an electronic visa linked directly to your passport. It allows multiple visits over 12 months, with stays up to 3 months per visit. It costs AUD $20 (service fee) and must be applied for using the official Australian ETA app — not any website. It is available to passport holders from 33 countries, primarily the United States, Canada, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Brunei, and Taiwan. If you hold a European passport, you need the free eVisitor visa instead.
Both allow multiple visits over 12 months with stays up to 3 months each. The key differences: the eVisitor (651) is free and available only to 36 European passport holders — applied for online at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au. The ETA (601) costs AUD $20, is for 33 non-European countries, and must be applied for via the Australian ETA app. If you hold a passport from a country eligible for both (some European nations overlap), the eVisitor saves you $20 but may take a few extra days to process.
No. Tourist visas (ETA, eVisitor, and Visitor Visa subclass 600) do not permit paid work. Working while on a tourist visa is a serious breach of your visa conditions — it can result in immediate visa cancellation, deportation, and a multi-year ban from re-entering Australia. If you want to work, you need a Working Holiday Visa (417/462, ages 18–35), a Student Visa with limited hours, or an employer-sponsored work visa.
Yes — widespread. Many third-party websites charge AUD $50–$200 to process an ETA that costs only AUD $20. The ETA can only be legitimately applied for via the official Australian ETA app (free download from Apple App Store or Google Play), through certain airlines and travel agents, or at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au. Never apply via an unofficial website. If you've been scammed, report it to Border Watch at homeaffairs.gov.au/report.
All Australian visas are electronic — there is no stamp or label in your passport. You can verify your visa at any time using VEVO (Visa Entitlement Verification Online) at border.gov.au/VEVO, using your passport number, country of birth, and date of birth. Airlines also check your visa status electronically before boarding. Always verify before travel, especially if you've changed passports — your visa is linked to your old passport number and you'll need to update or reapply.
Overstaying is a serious immigration offence. You become an unlawful non-citizen and may be detained by the Australian Border Force, removed from Australia at your own expense, and face a 3-year re-entry ban. Always know your exact visa expiry (check via VEVO) and apply for a new visa or extension before yours lapses if you wish to remain. Applying onshore for a new visa before your current visa expires is usually permitted and puts you on a Bridging Visa while the application is processed.
The Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417) and Work and Holiday Visa (subclass 462) allow people aged 18–35 (18–30 for some nationalities) to live, work, and travel in Australia for 12 months. Completing 88 days of specified regional work (farming, construction, care) qualifies for a second-year extension; another 88 days for a third year. The visa costs AUD $635 and is available to 46+ countries including the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, South Korea, Japan, and others. Apply at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au.
