Canberra punches well above its size at the table. The city's dining has gathered into a handful of walkable precincts, fed by a strong cool-climate produce region on its doorstep and one of the country's most serious coffee scenes.
Just north of the city, Braddon's converted warehouses and laneways around Lonsdale Street are the city's casual-dining heart - small bars, share plates, pizza, dumplings and late-night coffee in a tight, walkable few blocks.
On the southern edge of Lake Burley Griffin, the Kingston Foreshore lines the water with restaurants and bars. It is the place for a long lunch or a sunset dinner, and it sits beside the Sunday markets.
Canberra's kitchens draw on the surrounding region - cool-climate vegetables, cheese and the district's wines - and the city's cafe culture is genuinely strong, with specialty roasters across the suburbs.
The easiest way to graze across the precincts is a guided food tour: we handle the driving between Braddon, Kingston and the city, so the table is the only thing you need to think about.
