Welcome to Byron

Australia's easterly edge, on a guided day out

Byron Bay sits on the traditional Country of the Bundjalung Nation's Arakwal people — a place known as Cavvanbah, the meeting place. Today it's one of the most loved stretches of coastline in Australia, equally famous for its lighthouse, its waves and its barefoot wellness energy.

Coast, culture and the most easterly point

Our guided day tours showcase the region's most iconic coastal scenery — from the heritage-listed Cape Byron Lighthouse (built 1901, still shining over the Pacific) to the surfers carving turns at The Pass, the gentle turquoise of Wategos Beach, and the boutique village charm of Bangalow and Brunswick Heads.

We've designed the tours around plenty of free time in Byron's village centre so you can swim, eat, browse markets or simply sit by the water — paired with guided stops at the spots most visitors miss when they self-drive: hidden lookouts, local cafés, and the storied hinterland.

When to Visit

Byron Bay is a year-round destination

Each season brings a different mood — and a different reason to come. We run tours every day of the year except Christmas Day.

Summer

Dec – Feb

Peak beach season. Warm seas (24–26°C), busy markets, big festivals like Falls. Book accommodation early and plan early starts to beat the heat.

Autumn

Mar – May

Many locals' favourite — mild days, clear skies, fewer crowds and the Byron Bay Bluesfest at Easter. Ideal for the lighthouse walk and hinterland visits.

Winter

Jun – Aug

Whale-watching season starts. Warm days (still 18–22°C), quieter beaches and the best chance of seeing humpbacks from the lighthouse headland.

Spring

Sep – Nov

Whales heading south with calves, perfect swimming temperatures returning, wildflowers in the hinterland. Arguably the best all-rounder window.

Real Guest Stories

What guests say after their day

"Saw three koalas in the wild on the way down, and a pod of dolphins right off Wategos. Our guide spotted things we'd have walked straight past. Genuinely one of the best days of our Australia trip."

Sarah & James M.Manchester, UK · Full-day tour

"We did the private luxury option — Mercedes from our Brisbane hotel, finished up with a gin tasting at Brookie's. Worth every cent. The flexibility to linger at the lighthouse longer than planned made the day."

Mei L.Singapore · Private tour

"The Bangalow add-on completely changed the day for us. Such a beautiful village, and the Three Blue Ducks lunch at The Farm was unreal. We'd never have found it self-driving."

Daniel & Tom R.Melbourne · Bangalow tour
Know Before You Go

Practical info for your Byron day

What to wear

Comfortable walking shoes for the lighthouse precinct (some steps and a short uphill). Hat, sunscreen, sunglasses. Swimsuit and towel if you fancy a dip at Wategos.

Food & drink

Lunch is at your own cost so you can pick what you fancy in Byron village. Bring a refillable water bottle — there are fountains at the lighthouse and Main Beach.

Wildlife

Watch for kangaroos in the grasslands near the lighthouse, dolphins in Wategos, and humpback whales (Jun–Nov). Bring binoculars if you have them — Cape Byron is one of the best whale-watching headlands in Australia.

Photo spots

The lighthouse lawn at golden hour, the most-easterly-point marker, the stairs down to Little Wategos, the surfers at The Pass, and the heritage shopfronts of Bangalow.

National Park rules

The Cape Byron State Conservation Area is no-smoking and pet-free (assistance dogs excepted). Stay on the designated paths — cliff edges are dangerous and not all are fenced.

Accessibility

The lighthouse precinct can be accessed by car with advance arrangement (call NPWS Byron 02 6639 8300). Most of the walking track is not wheelchair-accessible — let us know your needs at booking.

Common Questions

Byron Bay tour FAQs

The questions we hear most often before guests book.

Byron Bay sits roughly 90km south of Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast — about a 1 hour 15 minute drive via the Pacific Motorway (M1). From Brisbane CBD it's closer to 165km, around 2 hours by road. Our small-group day tours include all transport, so you can relax and enjoy the coastal scenery either way.
Yes. Cape Byron Lighthouse sits inside the Walgun Cape Byron State Conservation Area, managed by NSW National Parks. The lighthouse precinct is open daily 8am to sunset, and the Maritime Museum in the former Lighthouse Keeper's cottage at the base of the tower is open 10am to 4pm daily. Short guided lighthouse tours run several times a day by gold-coin donation. There's a café on site with great coffee and views.
The Walgun Cape Byron walking track is a 3.7km loop that takes around two hours comfortably, with shorter sections also possible. It's graded Grade 3 — suitable for most ages and fitness levels, with some steep sections and steps. The track winds through rainforest, kangaroo grasslands and clifftop lookouts, passing Wategos Beach, Little Wategos Beach (Australia's easternmost beach) and the lighthouse. Whales are commonly spotted between June and November.
Most Byron Bay day tours include stops at Main Beach (the town beach), The Pass (the legendary surf break and grassy headland) and Wategos Beach (the sheltered, family-friendly cove tucked beneath the lighthouse). Our premium and private tours can extend to include Tallow Beach, Belongil Beach, or a Brunswick Heads detour depending on your interests. All Byron beaches outside marked flags are unpatrolled — swim carefully.
Yes — if you visit during whale-watching season, roughly June through November. Humpback whales migrate north along the coast in June–July and return south with calves in September–November. Cape Byron Lighthouse and the headland walking track are two of the best whale-watching vantage points on the entire Australian east coast. Bring binoculars if you can.
Yes — our full-day and premium tours include a detour through the rolling green hinterland to either Bangalow (a beautifully preserved heritage village with boutique shopping and excellent cafés) or to The Farm at Ewingsdale (a working farm with the renowned Three Blue Ducks restaurant and produce store). Private tours can be customised to add Husk Distillers, Brookie's Gin, Crystal Castle, or a Brunswick Heads stop.
Small-group day tours run on a fixed schedule with up to 12 other travellers in an air-conditioned mini-coach. They offer the best value and a sociable atmosphere. Private tours are just for your group — your own vehicle, your own guide, your own pace, with full flexibility on what you see and how long you spend. Private tours start at $595 for up to 4 guests and scale up for larger groups.
Absolutely. Wategos Beach is one of the safest swimming beaches in Byron Bay — sheltered, gently sloping and patrolled by lifesavers in peak periods. The lighthouse walk can be done in shorter sections to suit younger legs. Bangalow village is family-friendly with parks and good cafés. Our tours can supply approved child restraints and booster seats — please advise ages and weights at the time of booking.
Cape Byron is part of the traditional Country of the Bundjalung Nation, specifically the Arakwal people, who have lived in the region for at least 22,000 years. The headland's traditional name is Walgun. Julian Rocks (visible offshore from the lighthouse) is known as Nguthungulli, the resting place of the creator being in Arakwal tradition. Our tours include cultural context and we can arrange Aboriginal-led walks on request.
