Three days in Brisbane is the perfect duration for a first visit — enough time to cover the iconic city highlights, fit in a magnificent day trip, and still have space to discover a neighbourhood or two at your own pace. Brisbane is Australia's sunshine capital, with 300 days of sunshine annually, a stunning river winding through the city, world-class cultural attractions, and easy access to beaches, islands, and hinterland. This is the itinerary we'd give our own family and friends visiting Brisbane. Every timing, restaurant, and activity recommendation is based on years of showing people the best of this city.

💡 How to use this itinerary: Days 1 and 3 focus on the city — walkable and public-transport friendly with no car needed. Day 2 is your big day trip (we recommend Moreton Island or Lone Pine + River Cruise). The CityCat ferry runs a flat 50-cent Translink fare on all journeys — use it everywhere for spectacular river views. Adjust based on your interests using our Day 2 alternatives below.

Day 1 — South Bank, Cultural Precinct & City Exploration

Brisbane South Bank Parklands — Streets Beach, GOMA and Cultural Precinct riverside Queensland
Day 1 Morning
Start at South Bank — The City's Backyard
7:00 AM
Morning Coffee at South Bank
Start with excellent coffee at Stacks Espresso Bar on Grey Street — one of Brisbane's best specialty roasters. The early morning light on the river from South Bank is golden and peaceful before the crowds arrive.
7:30 AM
Streets Beach & South Bank Stroll
Walk through the 17-hectare Parklands along the Arbour pathway to Streets Beach — the only inner-city beach in Australia. A swim here with the CBD skyline behind you is genuinely extraordinary. Continue to the Goodwill Bridge for city skyline views. The Wheel of Brisbane at South Bank also offers panoramic rides across the precinct.
9:30 AM
QAGOMA — Gallery of Modern Art & Queensland Art Gallery
The QAGOMA precinct spans two buildings — GOMA (Australia's largest modern art gallery, 20,000+ works, Asia-Pacific and First Nations focus) and the Queensland Art Gallery next door. Both permanent collections are free. In 2026, GOMA is showing Olafur Eliasson's 'Presence' and 'City Before Our Eyes' (free, until October 2026). Allow 1.5–2 hours. The Children's Art Centre is outstanding for families.
Day 1 Midday
Lunch & the City Botanic Gardens
12:00 PM
Lunch at GOMA Restaurant or South Bank
GOMA Restaurant does an excellent value lunch with a changing seasonal menu. Alternatively, grab wood-fired pizza from the South Bank promenade or takeaway from the weekend food stalls. The Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) is steps away if there's an afternoon show worth catching.
1:30 PM
Catch the CityCat Ferry to the CBD
Board the CityCat river ferry from the South Bank terminal — flat 50-cent Translink fare. The 15-minute crossing gives brilliant views of the river, Kangaroo Point Cliffs, Story Bridge, and the new Queen's Wharf development. Alight at the Eagle Street Pier stop in the CBD.
2:00 PM
City Botanic Gardens, Parliament House & Queen's Wharf Sky Deck
Walk through the City Botanic Gardens — look for the massive Moreton Bay fig trees with extraordinary buttressed roots. Exit through the Parliament House gate and admire the 1868 sandstone building. Then head to the brand-new Queen's Wharf Sky Deck — at 100m high, this 250m-long rooftop is Brisbane's newest showstopper, with views all the way to Moreton Bay and Mt Coot-tha.
Day 1 Afternoon & Evening
Story Bridge, Howard Smith Wharves & Dinner
4:00 PM
Kangaroo Point Green Bridge & Cliffs
Cross the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge (opened 2023) from the CBD to the Kangaroo Point Cliffs. Walk the clifftop promenade for spectacular CBD views. Free public rock climbing walls are here, and kayak hire is available at the base — paddling under the Story Bridge is an unforgettable experience. For sunset views of the Story Bridge, the Wilson Outlook Reserve is Brisbane's best kept secret.
5:30 PM
Howard Smith Wharves — Pre-Dinner Drinks
Walk north along the river to Howard Smith Wharves — the most spectacular riverside setting in Brisbane, nestled under the Story Bridge in heritage industrial buildings. Mr Percival's outdoor bar is perfect for an aperitivo. Alternatively, the relaxed Felons Brewing serves outstanding local craft beers with that extraordinary bridge backdrop. Order Queensland wine or a pale ale and watch the evening light hit the steel.
7:30 PM
Dinner in Fortitude Valley or New Farm
Best dinner options: Longtime (modern Southeast Asian, 10 min walk from Wharves), Agnes Restaurant (wood fire, book ahead), or Gauge in James Street (exceptional tasting menus). For fine dining, Bacchus at Rydges South Bank does a celebrated 4-course degustation. For something more casual, Winn Lane in Fortitude Valley has outstanding small plates.

Day 2 — The Big Day Trip: Choose Your Adventure

Moreton Island day trip from Brisbane — Tangalooma Resort sand dunes and dolphin feeding Queensland

Day 2 is your main day trip from Brisbane. We offer four options depending on your interests:

A
Option A: Moreton Island (Best for Outdoors & Ocean)
🏝 Top Pick

This is the day trip we recommend most highly — an extraordinary combination of snorkelling over deliberate shipwreck reefs, sand boarding on towering desert dunes, and wild dolphin interaction at sunset. The fast ferry from Brisbane takes 75 minutes, and the island feels genuinely remote despite its proximity to the city. Moreton Island (Mulgumpin) is the world's third-largest sand island.

6:30 AM
Ferry Departs Brisbane
Tangalooma Resort ferry departs from Holt Street Wharf. Book the Cooee Tours Moreton Island day package for the best combination of activities.
8:00 AM
Snorkelling the Tangalooma Wrecks
15 deliberately sunk ships form an extraordinary artificial reef. Crystal-clear water, turtles, rays, and hundreds of colourful fish. No experience needed — equipment provided.
11:00 AM
Sand Boarding on Desert Dunes
The island's inland desert — massive sand dunes — are rideable on sand boards. Absurdly fun, and the views from the dune summits across the island to Moreton Bay are spectacular.
7:30 PM
Wild Dolphin Feeding at Sunset
Wild bottlenose dolphins enter the shallows at Tangalooma Beach at dusk — one of Australia's most magical wildlife moments. Return ferry departs 8:30 PM.
B
Option B: Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary + River Cruise
🐨 Wildlife

The classic Brisbane wildlife experience — board the Mirimar river cruise at 10am for a scenic 75-minute journey upriver to Lone Pine, the world's oldest and largest koala sanctuary. Spend 3 hours among 130+ koalas (hold one!), hand-feed kangaroos, spot wombats and Tasmanian devils, and watch the platypus display. Bird shows and sheepdog demonstrations round out an extraordinary half-day. Perfect for families and international visitors.

📍 Fig Tree Pocket⏱ Full day💰 From $89 with cruise
C
Option C: Gold Coast Hinterland Wine Tour
🍷 Wine

For couples and wine lovers — a guided day tour through the Tamborine Mountain and Canungra Valley wine regions. Three to four boutique cellar door visits including Cedar Creek Distillery and Witches Falls Winery, a long lunch at a winery restaurant, and spectacular hinterland views from the escarpment. Cooee Tours provides comfortable transport from Brisbane CBD — no driving required.

📍 Gold Coast Hinterland⏱ Full day💰 From $149 per person
D
Option D: Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island)
🌊 Island

Less than an hour's ferry ride away, Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) is one of Queensland's most beautiful coastal day trips. Pristine beaches, surf breaks, snorkelling at Cylinder Beach, and whale watching from June to November (one of the best spots on the east coast). A barge takes cars across; a passenger ferry is faster. The island's Quandamooka people have a rich cultural connection to the land.

📍 Moreton Bay⏱ Full day💰 Ferry from $20 return🐋 Whale watching Jun–Nov

Day 3 — Inner Suburbs & Rooftop Farewell

Brisbane Mt Coot-tha lookout panoramic view — city skyline Moreton Bay and Glass House Mountains
Day 3 Morning
New Farm Farmers Market & Breakfast
6:00 AM
Jan Powers Farmers Market, New Farm Park
One of Brisbane's best Saturday morning rituals — local producers, artisan bakers, coffee roasters, and fresh juice vendors under the enormous Moreton Bay fig trees of New Farm Park. Arrive early for the best selection. The Brisbane Powerhouse arts complex next door is worth a look for upcoming performances.
8:30 AM
Brunch in New Farm
New Farm has exceptional café culture. Recommended: Three Monkeys Coffee & Books (in a heritage Queenslander), The Ritual (outstanding eggs), or walk 20 minutes along the Riverwalk to Teneriffe for a café with sweeping river views.
Day 3 Midday
Mt Coot-tha Lookout & Botanic Gardens
10:30 AM
Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens
Take the 471 bus from the CBD to Mt Coot-tha. Walk the Botanic Gardens (don't miss the Japanese Garden, the arid dome, and the Planetarium). The Japanese Garden alone is one of the most tranquil experiences in the city — a genuine escape from the urban pace.
12:00 PM
Lunch at the Summit Restaurant
The Summit Restaurant at the Mt Coot-tha lookout has a beautiful terrace with a 180-degree panorama of Brisbane across to Moreton Bay and the Glass House Mountains on a clear day. The most impressive dining view in the city. Book ahead — it's popular with locals too.
Day 3 Afternoon & Evening
West End, Kayaking & Farewell Sunset
2:30 PM
West End Explore
Spend the afternoon exploring West End — Boundary Street cafés, vintage stores, independent galleries, and the brilliant Avid Reader bookshop. Grab an afternoon coffee at Caffe Gioia or Three Monkeys. West End also hosts excellent street art and one of Brisbane's most creative communities.
4:30 PM
GoBoat River Cruise or Sunset Cocktail Cruise
Two options: hire a GoBoat — an electric self-drive boat on the Brisbane River, no licence needed, 2-hour hire — for a leisurely private cruise past the Story Bridge, South Bank, and Queen's Wharf. Or join a small-group sunset cocktail cruise from South Bank Pontoon. The city turns gold-orange at sunset from the water.
7:30 PM
Farewell Dinner in the CBD
Splurge: Donna Chang (spectacular Chinese) in the CBD, or the Emporium Hotel rooftop for cocktails and city views. Relaxed: Back to Fortitude Valley for excellent ramen or Vietnamese at one of the outstanding Chinatown options. The Judith Wright Arts Centre in Fortitude Valley has late-evening performances worth checking.

Practical Information & FAQ

South Bank and the South Brisbane area puts you walkable distance from most Day 1 activities and provides easy ferry access to the CBD. Fortitude Valley is excellent for nightlife access. Recommended hotels: South Bank (Rydges, Next Hotel, Bacchus-lover's pick), CBD (Emporium Hotel, W Brisbane), Fortitude Valley (Ovolo), Budget (YHA Brisbane City). For this itinerary, South Bank or Kangaroo Point accommodation is ideal — Kangaroo Point in particular has spectacular Story Bridge views.
Three days is a great introduction to Brisbane — you'll cover the major highlights and fit in one excellent day trip. If you want to add the Sunshine Coast (Glass House Mountains, Noosa) or Gold Coast hinterland (Tamborine Mountain, Lamington National Park), extend to 5 days with our 5-Day Queensland Road Trip. Brisbane genuinely rewards longer stays as you discover the neighbourhood depth of West End, Paddington, Bulimba, and New Farm.
No car is needed for this specific 3-day itinerary. Brisbane's CityCat ferry (flat 50-cent Translink fare), go card buses, and Cooee Tours transport cover everything. The CityCat is also one of Brisbane's best experiences — spectacular river views of the Story Bridge and South Bank skyline for 50 cents. For the day trips, we provide comfortable transport from the CBD. If you want to extend to the Sunshine Coast or Gold Coast independently, a car for Day 4–5 is useful.
Moreton Island is our top recommendation — snorkelling over the Tangalooma Wrecks (15 deliberately sunk ships forming an extraordinary artificial reef), sand boarding on massive dunes, and wild dolphin feeding at sunset on Moreton Island (Mulgumpin), the world's third-largest sand island. The island feels genuinely remote despite being 75 minutes from Brisbane by fast ferry. Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary (hold a koala, hand-feed kangaroos) is the classic wildlife alternative. Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) is excellent during whale watching season (June–November).
