🏕️ Adventure Weekends
Fraser Island (K'gari)
The world's largest sand island — officially named K'gari in the language of the Butchulla people — is the single best weekend trip you can do from Brisbane, full stop. Two nights gives you time to experience the ethereally clear Lake McKenzie, drive 75-Mile Beach at sunrise, explore the wreck of the Maheno, swim in Eli Creek, marvel at the Pinnacles' coloured sand cliffs, and do the Lake Wabby walk. You'll want longer.
The island requires a 4WD vehicle and a vehicle permit. Options: self-drive hire from Hervey Bay (most flexibility), a 2-day guided tag-along 4WD tour (all planning done for you), or stay at Kingfisher Bay Resort (eco-certified, excellent base, ranger tours included). The island is now officially Gheebulum Kunungai National Park for its national park sections — a recognition of its Butchulla heritage.

Lamington National Park & O'Reilly's
O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat has been welcoming guests to the ancient heart of Lamington since 1926. The Treetop Walk, over 160km of walking tracks, platypus spotting at dusk, and the most obliging bird life in Australia (crimson rosellas and king parrots will eat from your hand on arrival) make this one of Queensland's most restorative weekends.
Stay two nights at O'Reilly's main lodge or the newer Lost World Spa for a full rainforest immersion. Day one: Treetop Walk and Blue Pool Waterfall trail. Day two: the longer Python Rock or Box Forest circuit. Glowworms are visible on night walks throughout the year.

💕 Romantic Weekends
Byron Bay
Byron Bay is the quintessential Brisbane weekend escape — and the crowds prove it. What those crowds don't diminish: the lighthouse walk at sunrise (you'll likely be alone), Watego's Beach (still magic at any hour), the farm-to-table restaurant scene (Harvest Newrybar, Folk, The Byron, Rae's at Watego's), and the general feeling that the world is softer here.
For couples, stay at one of the hinterland retreats near Bangalow or Newrybar rather than in Byron town — you get peace and countryside but the beach is 20 minutes away. Thursday is especially good: the Bangalow Farmers Market.
📋 Sample Weekend Itinerary
Noosa Heads
Noosa is the closest genuinely luxurious weekend escape from Brisbane — and it's only 1.5 hours. The combination of Main Beach (protected from surf, ideal for swimming), the National Park headland walk (koalas almost guaranteed), Hastings Street restaurants, and the Sunday Noosa Farmers Market makes this a natural couples' choice.
New in 2026: the Noosa Everglades — the “River of Mirrors” — has become a standout overnight experience. The 60km tannin-stained waterway, with guided kayak tours departing from Boreen Point (30 minutes from Noosa), is one of Queensland's most extraordinary nature additions. Stay at the boutique HOLA (House of Local Art) hotel in nearby Eumundi for a uniquely Sunshine Coast experience.
🍷 Wine & Food Weekends
Granite Belt Wine Region
Queensland's only genuine cool-climate wine region sits at 900 metres altitude on the southern tablelands — the wine is genuinely excellent (try the alternative varietals: Fiano, Tempranillo, and Verdelho), the granite boulder landscape is unique and beautiful, and the food scene in Stanthorpe punches well above its size. In winter, it actually gets cold — the only place in Queensland where you might need a fire.
Over 60 cellar doors within a 30km radius of Stanthorpe. Best: Sirromet (largest, stunning views), Ballandean Estate (oldest, excellent Muscat), Ravens Croft (small, biodynamic, by appointment), Symphony Hill (consistently most awarded), and Golden Grove Estate. For accommodation, Allure Stanthorpe's glamping tents are among the most memorable in Queensland.

Tamborine Mountain Weekend
Tamborine Mountain is Brisbane's go-to weekend escape for good reason — it's close, beautiful, completely different from the city, and the boutique accommodation scene is genuinely lovely. Gallery Walk has 40+ galleries and specialty stores, 10+ cellar doors within walking distance, and the rainforest walks (Curtis Falls, Cedar Creek) take no time to reach.
For a proper weekend, stay Friday and Saturday nights in a mountain cottage. Day one: cellar doors, Gallery Walk and a long dinner at Songbirds Rainforest Retreat. Day two: Skywalk canopy walk, Curtis Falls, and the drive home along the Beaudesert road. The award-winning Tamborine Mountain winery offers tastings from $10 — pair with Witches Chase Cheese for a simple perfect afternoon.
👪 Family Weekends
Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island)
Minjerribah (the Quandamooka name for North Stradbroke Island, now the official name) is Brisbane's perfect family island getaway — accessible by ferry from Cleveland (no car required, or take the car on the barge), calm waters on the western side for young kids, legendary whale watching from Point Lookout (June–November), and sea turtles almost guaranteed in the waters off the headland.
In 2026, Yura Tours runs cultural experiences led by traditional owners, the Quandamooka people — the Yallingbilla (Whale) Tour from Point Lookout and the Bajara “Footprints” Beach & Lakes 4WD tour are outstanding family additions. Don't miss the North Gorge walk at Point Lookout — it's extraordinary.
Gold Coast Theme Parks
Movie World, Dreamworld, Sea World, and WhiteWater World are all within a 20-minute stretch of Pacific Highway. A two-night weekend with two theme park days is one of Queensland's great family escapes — exhausting, exhilarating and completely worth it. Stay at a resort within walking distance of the parks for the most seamless experience.
Beyond the parks, HOTA (Home of the Arts) has transformed the Gold Coast's cultural offer — free outdoor cinema screenings and market events on weekends. Burleigh Heads is 20 minutes south for a more relaxed beach and brunch day. Miami Marketta night market runs Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings for excellent food and a lively atmosphere.
🧘 Wellness & Relaxation Weekends
Montville & Maleny Retreat
The Blackall Range hinterland — Montville, Maleny, and the villages in between — is the ideal decompression weekend from Brisbane. No nightlife, no traffic (mostly), excellent food, beautiful walks, cooler air, and some of Queensland's most charming boutique accommodation. It deliberately slows you down, and that's exactly the point.
Maleny's Saturday Farmers Market (7am–noon) is one of the best in the state. The Maleny Botanic Gardens are beautifully maintained and calm. Mary Cairncross Reserve offers an easy rainforest walk with extraordinary Glass House Mountain views. For 2026, Eden Health Retreat — a short drive from Maleny — has been highlighted as one of Queensland's premier wellness destinations, offering multi-day health programs in a serene retreat setting.
Sunshine Coast Spa & Beach Weekend
The Sunshine Coast has quietly become one of Queensland's premier wellness destinations — the Noosa area in particular has excellent day spas, yoga retreats and healthy-eating restaurants that rival anything in Byron Bay. The Sofitel Noosa Pacific's aqua therapy pool, the Noosa Holistic Health centre and the weekly farmers market create a complete wellness weekend template.
Start with an early surf lesson on Main Beach (year-round), spend the afternoon at a spa, and book a table at Locale or Noosa Beach House for a proper weekend dinner. Sunday morning at the Noosa Farmers Market is not optional. Add a guided kayak on the Noosa Everglades (River of Mirrors) from Boreen Point for a transcendent nature morning.
🗺️ More Great Weekends
Scenic Rim & Girraween
The Scenic Rim's wine region (Canungra Valley, Heritage Wines) pairs beautifully with Girraween National Park's extraordinary granite boulder landscape for a slightly off-the-beaten-track weekend. Less polished than Granite Belt, but more adventurous — the Pyramid hike at Girraween (4km return, steep granite face, 360-degree views) is one of Queensland's best walks. Combined with a stay at Mt Alford or Boonah, this is one of the most underrated weekends in Southeast Queensland.
Sunshine Coast Hinterland (Pomona, Kin Kin & Cooloola)
The area north and west of Noosa — Kin Kin, Pomona, Cooloola — is the kind of place locals try not to tell visitors about. Boutique dairy farms, olive groves, a legendary historic cinema (Majestic Theatre Pomona, restored 1921 picture palace), and the Great Sandy National Park's Cooloola section for canoe wilderness adventures on the Noosa Everglades. Stay at Rainbow Beach for easy access to both the coloured sand cliffs and the Cooloola wilderness canoe trails.
Toowoomba & Darling Downs
Two hours inland, Toowoomba sits on the edge of the Great Dividing Range with gorgeous heritage gardens, a thriving arts scene, and the Carnival of Flowers in September — one of Queensland's most spectacular community events. The Darling Downs' flat agricultural landscapes feel a world away from coastal Queensland. The Cobb+Co Museum and the Downs' heritage station stays make this one of Queensland's most genuinely different weekends from Brisbane.
Bundaberg & Southern Great Barrier Reef
Three hours north, Bundaberg is the launch pad for Lady Elliot Island — the Great Barrier Reef's southernmost coral cay, reachable by small plane from Bundaberg airport. Loggerhead turtle nesting (November–March) or spectacular manta ray encounters year-round. The island eco-resort is the best budget option for the Barrier Reef from Brisbane — typically $400–600pp all-inclusive for an overnight stay. This is genuinely one of the best underwater experiences accessible on a Brisbane weekend.
Rainbow Beach & Great Sandy
The coloured sand cliffs of Rainbow Beach, the Double Island Point surf break, and a natural gateway to K'gari (Fraser Island) make this little-known town one of Southeast Queensland's best adventure base camps. Two hours fifteen minutes from Brisbane on the Great Sandy National Park's coast, and much less visited than the Sunshine Coast. In 2026, the Great Beach Drive — a 4WD coastal route from Noosa's North Shore through Teewah Beach to Rainbow Beach — has gained significant attention as one of Queensland's great drives.
How to Plan a Weekend Trip from Brisbane
When to Go
Queensland's best weekend trip weather is June–August — warm days, dry, clear skies, and the hinterland feels pleasantly cool. September–November is also excellent and adds wildflowers (particularly Girraween) and whale watching (Stradbroke, Hervey Bay). Avoid driving to major destinations on Friday afternoons in December–January — the Pacific Motorway south and Bruce Highway north can be brutal at peak summer school holiday periods.
Booking Tips
Noosa and Byron Bay accommodation books out 3–6 months in advance for popular weekends (school holidays, long weekends). Granite Belt and Lamington/O'Reilly's are easier to book at shorter notice. Fraser Island (Kingfisher Bay) should be booked at least 6–8 weeks ahead for any weekend with good weather. Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island) barge car spots are limited — book as soon as you know your dates.
Budget Guidance
A comfortable two-night weekend trip from Brisbane for two people typically costs $600–$1,200 all-in (accommodation, food, activities, fuel). Budget options exist everywhere — camping at K'gari, cabin stays at O'Reilly's, farm cottages in the Granite Belt — that bring the cost well under $400/couple for a properly good weekend.
