Tour Highlights

Why this 3-day reef escape is genuinely special

A handful of reef tours can deliver any one of these. Almost none deliver all six in a single trip — and that's what makes the Lady Musgrave run from 1770 a hidden gem of the Southern Great Barrier Reef.

Snorkel with turtles in a 10-km lagoon

Lady Musgrave is the only coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef with a navigable lagoon — a sheltered, calm aquarium-like swim site teeming with green sea turtles year-round.

Sunsets from your beachside resort

Two nights at the 5-star Sandcastles 1770 Motel & Resort. Pool, beach, and one of the only places on the east coast where you can watch the sun set over water.

Optional scuba diving on the reef

Lady Musgrave's coral is exceptionally healthy — no major bleaching events in over 10 years. Both certified and beginner divers can explore the 'Great 8' marine encounters.

Deep-sea fishing for all skill levels

Optional reef fishing charters from 1770 — gear provided, captains who know the spots. Perfect for first-timers and seasoned anglers alike.

Bundaberg Rum Distillery visit

On the way up, a tour of Australia's most iconic rum distillery — the home of "Bundy" since 1888 — including tastings and a guided walk through the heritage barrel halls.

Choice of room types

Pick the option that fits your budget and group: shared backpacker-style accommodation, or a private room with ensuite. Couples and families both well looked after.

Meet your coach in the morning at the central pickup point in Brisbane (Roma Street Station), the Gold Coast (Pacific Fair) or the Sunshine Coast (door-to-door for 2+ within 10 km of CBD) and head north along the Bruce Highway towards the Town of 1770.

Around midday we stop in Bundaberg for lunch (own expense) and a guided tour of the world-famous Bundaberg Rum Distillery — Australia's most iconic spirit, made on this site since 1888. Walk through the heritage barrel halls, hear the history, and finish with a tasting (over 18s only).

Back on the coach, we arrive in 1770 by mid-afternoon and check in to your 5-star Sandcastles 1770 Motel & Resort. Choose your activity: optional surf lessons or kayak hire (own expense), or simply unwind by the resort pool, lounge on the beach, or take a swim.

In the evening, dinner is included at the resort. Afterwards, enjoy the on-site nightlife or take a quiet walk along the beach — the Town of 1770 is one of the few east-coast Australian beaches where you can watch the sun set and stargaze without much light pollution. Look for shooting stars.

Breakfast Lunch Dinner

Lady Musgrave Island coral cay and turquoise lagoon from above, Southern Great Barrier Reef

The headline day. After breakfast at the resort, transfer to the 1770 Marina to board the Spirit of 1770 — a high-speed air-conditioned catamaran that crosses the 90-minute open-ocean run to Lady Musgrave Island. Calm waters dominate this corner of the reef year-round, and unlike most of the Queensland coast, the lagoon is free of stinging jellyfish.

Arrive at Coral Lagoon for around five hours of paradise. Snorkel gear is provided, with flotation aids (life jackets and pool noodles) for first-timers and a qualified crew member supervising the snorkel area at all times. The lagoon is home to over 1,300 species of tropical fish, 350 coral species and the famous "Great 8" — whales (in season), manta rays, turtles, clownfish, sharks, giant clams, potato cod and Maori wrasse.

If you'd rather stay dry, the glass-bottom boat tour and a guided 45-minute island walk through the Pisonia Grandis forest reveal seabird rookeries and (in October–December) nesting turtle tracks. Optional scuba diving for both certified and beginner divers, plus deep-sea fishing charters with provided gear, are available at your own expense — pre-book at time of booking.

Lunch, morning tea and afternoon tea are served on board. If time and tides allow, you'll be treated to a sunset cruise on the return leg. Back at the resort, dinner is included; evening at your leisure.

Glasshouse Mountains volcanic plugs viewed across rural Queensland landscape

Check out of the resort after breakfast and take the morning to enjoy 1770 one last time. Optional surf lesson (own expense), a final swim, snorkel or beach walk depending on conditions and timing.

Around midday, say farewell to 1770 and the coach turns south. We stop in Bundaberg for lunch (own expense) and visit Snakes Downunder Reptile Park & Zoo in Childers — one of regional Queensland's quirkiest family attractions, with crocodiles, snakes, lizards and a friendly café for a coffee break.

Continue south, catching the iconic silhouette of the Glasshouse Mountains as you approach the Sunshine Coast. You return to your starting point in the evening, ending the tour on roughly the same time as the morning departure on Day 1.

What past travellers say about this 3-day tour

Independent reviews from guests who've done the 1770 & Lady Musgrave Island 3-day trip with Cooee Tours.

★★★★★
Honestly the best three days of our entire Australia trip. Snorkelling at Lady Musgrave was magical — turtles right next to us, fish everywhere, and the lagoon is so calm even the kids felt safe. Resort was beautiful, sunsets unreal. Driver was a legend.

Did the scuba diving option at Lady Musgrave — coral was healthier than anywhere I've dived in 20 years. The 90-min boat ride is bumpy if it's windy (take a Kwells beforehand) but completely worth it. The Bundy rum stop was a fun bonus.

Picked us up door-to-door from our place on the Sunshine Coast (we're 2 of us so qualified for the inclusion) — couldn't fault it. Sandcastles is a proper resort, the catamaran crew know the reef inside out, and we got home before 7pm on Day 3. Will book again.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

The questions travellers most often ask before booking the 1770 & Lady Musgrave 3-day tour.

The Town of 1770 (also called Seventeen Seventy) is a small coastal village in Queensland, located approximately 500 km north of Brisbane and 80 km north-east of Bundaberg. It is the second place in Australia where Captain James Cook came ashore — on 24 May 1770. From the Gold Coast it's around 580 km, from the Sunshine Coast around 400 km. Cooee Tours includes round-trip Mercedes coach transport from any of these three pickup points.
Lady Musgrave Island is an uninhabited coral cay in the Capricornia Cays National Park, on the Southern Great Barrier Reef. It's the only coral cay on the Reef with a navigable lagoon and walkable island, surrounded by a 10 km coral-walled lagoon home to 1,300 species of tropical fish and 350 coral species. The island is named after Lady Lucinda Musgrave, wife of a 19th-century Queensland governor, and is a significant breeding ground for green and loggerhead turtles.
Yes — turtle sightings are an everyday occurrence at Lady Musgrave Island. The protected lagoon is home to resident green sea turtles, and from October to December, loggerhead and green turtles return to the island each night to lay eggs. Hatchlings emerge from January to April. Many guests swim alongside turtles while snorkelling in the lagoon.
Yes. The coral wall surrounding Lady Musgrave Island creates a calm, sheltered lagoon, making it one of the safest snorkelling sites on the Great Barrier Reef for first-time snorkellers and non-swimmers. Flotation aids including life jackets and pool noodles are provided, and a qualified crew member supervises the snorkel area at all times. The water is also free of stinging jellyfish year-round.
Yes — both certified and beginner divers can scuba dive at Lady Musgrave, exploring coral bommies and reef walls home to whales (in season), manta rays, turtles, clownfish, sharks, giant clams, potato cod and Maori wrasse — sometimes called the "Great 8" of the Great Barrier Reef. Deep-sea fishing charters are also available for anglers of all skill levels with provided gear. Both options are at your own expense and should be pre-booked.
The tour runs year-round and the lagoon is sheltered enough to enjoy in any season. June to October is humpback whale migration season and offers cooler, drier weather. November to March is summer reef season — warmer water, ideal for snorkelling and the chance to see nesting turtles. April and May are excellent shoulder months with calm seas and good visibility.
Yes — the protected lagoon, supervised snorkel area, glass-bottom boat for non-swimmers, guided island walks and family-friendly resort make this 3-day tour ideal for families. The catamaran cruise is approximately 90 minutes each way and seas can be choppy on open ocean — we recommend seasickness tablets for younger children. Please note the tour is not recommended for pregnant travellers and is not wheelchair accessible.
The $1,180 base price is per person on a shared-room basis (backpacker-style with shared bathrooms). Twin Share Private and Double Share options bump up to $1,390 per person for a private room with ensuite (twin beds for friends, queen for couples). The Single Supplement is $1,690 for sole occupancy of a private room. All options include the same coach transport, reef cruise, meals and activities. Call 0409 661 342 for current availability.
Free cancellation up to 48 hours before the tour departs. After that, standard multi-day tour cancellation terms apply (call us or check your booking confirmation for full details). Travel insurance is strongly recommended for all multi-day reef tours, particularly during the wet season (Nov–April) when weather can occasionally affect the catamaran sailing schedule.
