Road Trips from Brisbane

Brisbane sits at the start of some of Australia's most spectacular drives. Whether you've got 2 days or 2 weeks, these 8 road trips cover every direction from the city — from the Pacific Coast all the way to Cairns, from the Granite Belt's wine country to the ancient hinterland rainforest.

🗺️ 8 epic routes 🚗 Day trips to 2-week adventures 📍 Full stop lists & tips

Brisbane's geography is a road-tripper's dream. The city sits at the meeting point of coastal, hinterland and inland Queensland — within a tank of fuel you can be in dense subtropical rainforest, open surf beach, wine country, island wilderness, volcanic hinterland or the ancient granite plateau of the Granite Belt. Drive a week north and you're in Cairns and the Daintree. Two days south and you're deep in NSW's Byron Bay hinterland.

These 8 routes are the best of them, written by locals who've actually driven them — not press-release itineraries. Each includes honest notes on what to skip, what to prioritise, and how to make the most of your time.

🏖️ The Pacific Coast Highway — Brisbane to Cairns

Australia's greatest coastal drive — all the way to the Tropics
📏 1,705km total
⏱️ 10–14 days recommended
🗓️ Best: May–September
💰 ~$150/day for two

The Pacific Coast Highway from Brisbane to Cairns is one of Australia's iconic road trips — a 1,705km journey through eight dramatically different landscapes, from the Sunshine Coast's surf beaches to the ancient rainforest of the Daintree. Fly one-way to save the return drive, or turn it into a full loop with an inland route home.

Allow at least 10–14 days to do it properly; 7 days is the bare minimum if you push hard. The most common mistake is rushing the middle section — Rainbow Beach, K'gari (Fraser Island) and the 1770/Agnes Water area deserve more time than most itineraries allow.

🟠 START

Brisbane

Depart from Brisbane CBD via Pacific Motorway north.

110km — 1.5 hrs

Noosa Heads

First night stop. Noosa National Park headland walk in the morning (wild koalas in the trees), Laguna Lookout for views, Hastings Street for dinner. Non-negotiable.

230km — 3 hrs total

Rainbow Beach & Inskip Point

Coloured sand cliffs, a beautiful sheltered beach, and the barge departure point for K'gari. Stay overnight; Double Island Point surf break is exceptional.

Barge from Inskip Point

K'gari (Fraser Island) — 1–2 nights

The world's largest sand island, UNESCO World Heritage listed. Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek, 75-Mile Beach, Maheno Wreck, the Pinnacles. Do not rush this. Two nights minimum; Kingfisher Bay Resort is the best base.

410km — 5 hrs total

Agnes Water & Town of 1770

Queensland's most northerly surf beach, a tiny historic township (Captain Cook landed here in 1770) and the launch point for Lady Musgrave Island reef cruises. Underrated stop — most people drive past too quickly.

640km — 7.5 hrs total

Airlie Beach & the Whitsundays

The gateway to the Whitsundays — Whitehaven Beach, Heart Reef scenic flight, island sailing with bioluminescent nights. Budget two nights minimum; three is better. This is the high point of the entire drive for most travellers.

820km — 10 hrs total

Cape Hillsborough & Townsville

Don't bypass Cape Hillsborough — it's one of the only places in Australia to watch kangaroos and wallabies on a beach at sunrise. Townsville: Magnetic Island (Forts Walk for wild koalas, rock wallabies), Museum of Underwater Art.

990km — 12 hrs total

Mission Beach & Dunk Island

Where the rainforest meets the reef — and where cassowaries cross the road. The most underrated stop on the whole highway. The Great Barrier Reef sits just 20km offshore. Licuala fan palm groves, absolute beach wilderness.

🟢 FINISH — 1,705km

Cairns

The Esplanade Lagoon, Agincourt Reef day trip, Daintree Rainforest, Kuranda Scenic Railway, Cape Tribulation. Allow 3–5 days.

⚡ Essential Tips for Brisbane to Cairns

  • Stinger season (Oct–May): box jellyfish in Far North Queensland waters — wear a stinger suit north of Townsville
  • Fuel: Never pass a servo in the remote central Queensland stretches without topping up
  • Best months: May–September (dry season); September–October is the sweet spot: dry, warm and peak humpback whale season off Hervey Bay
  • Fly back: One-way flights Cairns–Brisbane are often under $99. No need to retrace 1,705km of highway
  • K'gari (Fraser Island): Book Kingfisher Bay at least 6 weeks ahead in peak season

🍇 The Granite Belt Wine Route

Queensland's wine country — highlands, granite boulders and cellar doors
📏 500km return
⏱️ 3–4 days recommended
🗓️ Best: April–September
💰 ~$130/day for two

The drive inland to the Granite Belt is one of Queensland's most rewarding and least-visited road trips. From Brisbane, head south-west through Ipswich and Warwick — a beautiful drive through the Darling Downs — and up onto the Southern Downs plateau at 900m altitude where the granite landscape and the wine scene create something unlike anywhere else in Queensland.

Girraween National Park is the unexpected highlight — an extraordinary landscape of giant granite boulders and balancing rocks with excellent walking tracks. Spring (August–October) adds spectacular wildflower displays. Winter is the only place in Queensland cold enough to justify a fire — and the alternative varietals (Fiano, Tempranillo, Verdelho) are exceptional.

START — Brisbane CBD

Brisbane

South-west via Ipswich Motorway and Cunningham Highway.

162km — 2 hrs

Warwick

Queensland's rose capital — gorgeous heritage sandstone architecture, the annual Rodeo (October), and a legendary local bakery. Good fuel and coffee stop.

220km — 2.75 hrs

265km from Brisbane

Girraween National Park

Don't miss this. The Pyramid hike (4km return, steep granite face, 360° views) is one of Queensland's best walks. Spring wildflowers are spectacular. An extraordinary landscape unlike anything else in Queensland.

More Road Trips from Brisbane

🌄 The Great Inland Way — Brisbane to Cairns via Outback

1,900km, 10–14 days: Instead of the coast, head west from Brisbane through Toowoomba and onto the Darling Downs, then north through Roma, Longreach (Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame), Cloncurry, and the Gulf of Carpentaria before reaching Cairns via the Gulf Developmental Road. This is for serious road-trippers — the landscapes are epic, the distances are huge, and the reward is seeing an Australia that most tourists never reach. Essential: a reliable SUV or 4WD, a satellite phone, and a meticulous fuel plan. All roads are fully sealed.

🌊 The New England Highlands — Brisbane to Sydney

1,000km, 5–7 days: South through Byron Bay, then inland via the New England Tablelands — Armidale, Tamworth, Oxley Wild Rivers National Park (extraordinary gorges), Warrumbungle National Park and into the Hunter Valley wine region before Sydney. One of Australia's great drives that most people skip in favour of the coast. The New England Tableland's clear air, dramatic gorges and traditional Australian country towns (Warwick's Jumpers & Jazz in July festival is charming) are a revelation. Best driven June–August for the crisp highland air.

🏝️ K'gari (Fraser Island) & Sunshine Coast North Loop

800km, 5–6 days: Brisbane to Noosa (1.5 hrs), north to Rainbow Beach, barge to K'gari (2 nights), return via Hervey Bay for whale watching (June–November, the whale watching capital of Australia), then back to Mooloolaba on the coast road. A perfect balance of island wilderness, beach culture and wildlife — the ideal first Queensland road trip for visitors from overseas or from southern states.

Road Trip Planning Guide 2026

What to Drive

A standard 2WD sedan handles all the routes above except K'gari (Fraser Island), which requires a registered 4WD and vehicle permit. For comfort on longer routes, a mid-size SUV is ideal. Rental cars are available at Brisbane Airport from around $50–80/day; always book ahead in June–August peak season.

When to Go

May–September is universally the best time — dry, comfortable, low humidity. September–October is excellent and adds whale watching off Hervey Bay (peak: July–November) and wildflowers at Girraween. December–February brings wet season north of Townsville. March–May (post-wet season) means extraordinary waterfall flows in the hinterland.

Fuel & Safety

Never pass a service station on the Great Inland Way or remote Queensland routes without topping up. Download the Hema Explorer app (offline maps, fuel locations) and WikiCamps for free and paid camp sites. RACQ roadside assistance membership is worth every cent for long Queensland drives. Always carry 10 litres of emergency fuel on remote routes. Tell someone your route before heading into remote areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best road trip from Brisbane for first-timers?
The Sunshine Coast & Hinterland Loop (3–4 days, 350km) is the top recommendation for first-time Queensland visitors. It covers the most iconic landscapes — Glass House Mountains, Noosa National Park with wild koalas, Blackall Range villages — without any difficult driving or remote fuel anxiety. The Pacific Coast to Cairns is the gold standard for those with 10+ days.
Can I drive Brisbane to Cairns in 3 days?
Technically yes — it's 1,705km and about 550km per day. In practice this is a terrible idea. You'd see nothing except highways and be exhausted. Allow 10–14 days minimum to do it justice. If you only have a week, fly to Cairns and explore the north independently, or book a guided multi-day tour that covers the highlights efficiently. The rule of thumb: if all you want to do is get between two cities, fly. Road trips are about the journey, not the destination.
Do I need a 4WD for any of these road trips?
Only K'gari (Fraser Island) is inaccessible without a registered 4WD and vehicle permit. All other routes on this page — including the Lamington and Springbrook national park roads (sealed but steep) — are suitable for standard 2WD vehicles. The Great Inland Way to Cairns is fully sealed and 2WD accessible, though a high-clearance vehicle helps on secondary roads. If renting, a mid-size SUV is the ideal all-rounder.
What is the most scenic road trip from Brisbane?
The Scenic Rim loop delivers the greatest variety of dramatic landscapes closest to Brisbane — rainforest, waterfalls, volcanic hinterland and wine country within 400km. For pure coastal drama, the Pacific Coast from Noosa to Airlie Beach is extraordinary. The Granite Belt route has the most unique landscape — giant granite boulders emerging from high-altitude plains, found nowhere else in Queensland. All three are spectacular for completely different reasons.
