The full outer reef day is a long and extraordinary one. Kuranda — The Village in the Rainforest

Kuranda sits 330 metres above Cairns on the edge of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Rainforest. Getting there is half the experience: the Kuranda Scenic Railway (built 1891 by hand through the range using picks and shovels) climbs through 15 tunnels and past Stoney Creek Falls — one of Australia's most scenic rail journeys.

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway runs 7.5km over the canopy — you can look straight down into the ancient forest and stop at mid-stations for boardwalk walks. Most visitors take the train one way and Skyrail the other, for 6–7 hours in and around the village.
