Queensland Road Trip Planner

From Brisbane's river bends to the Great Barrier Reef and the world's oldest rainforest, Queensland's Pacific coast is one of Australia's great drives. Here's how to plan it — routes, distances, timing and the stops that matter.

Queensland's Pacific coast — roughly 1,700 km of beaches, islands and rainforest from Brisbane to Cairns.

Queenslanders call the coastal run from Brisbane to Cairns the Pacific Coast Way, and it's one of the country's truly great drives — around 1,700 kilometres of Queensland's tropical coast, from the cafes and river bends of Brisbane to the Great Barrier Reef and the ancient Daintree rainforest. Half the fun is ducking off the highway to beach towns, rum distilleries and rainforest pockets along the way. This planner covers the essentials: the route, the distances, how long to take, when to go, and the stops worth building in.

The classic route: Brisbane to Cairns

The backbone is the Bruce Highway (National Highway A1), heading north up the coast. Straight through, it's roughly 1,700 kilometres and 19 to 20 hours of driving — but nobody sensible drives it straight through. This is a trip measured in stops, not hours. Most travellers take somewhere between one and two weeks, and you could happily spend a month.

2WD is fine for the main coastal route — save the 4WD for detours like K'gari.

How long to take

Time is the real variable. As a guide: 7 days covers the route at a brisk pace with a couple of highlights; 10 days gives you room to breathe; and 14 days is the sweet spot, letting you enjoy each major stop without living in the car. Have longer? Slow down and add island time or a loop inland. A good rule is one to two nights per major stop and no more than four or five hours of driving on any moving day. For a fuller breakdown by trip length, see how many days in Queensland.

When to go

Timing matters more the further north you drive. The dry season, roughly May to October, is ideal — especially for the tropical north around Cairns and the Daintree, where it avoids the wet season's heavy rain, humidity and the small but real chance of cyclones. It also sidesteps the summer peak crowds. The southern half of the coast is pleasant year-round, but for the full run, aim for the cooler, drier months.

2WD or 4WD?

For the main coastal highway, a standard 2WD car or campervan is perfectly fine — the Bruce Highway is sealed the whole way. You'll only need a 4WD for specific detours: K'gari (Fraser Island) requires one, as do some beach and outback tracks. Plenty of visitors do the coast in a 2WD and join a guided 4WD tour for the sandy bits.

Planning tips

Fuel up regularly — distances between service stations can stretch in the quieter northern sections. Avoid driving at dawn and dusk when wildlife is active on the roads. Book ahead in peak season and around events. And build in a spare day or two: reef and island trips are weather-dependent, and flexibility saves the day.

Other Queensland routes

The full Brisbane-to-Cairns epic isn't the only option. If you have less time, consider a Brisbane – Gold Coast – Byron Bay loop (an easy weekend of beaches and hinterland just south), a Scenic Rim or Sunshine Coast hinterland drive (rainforest, wineries and lookouts within a couple of hours of Brisbane), or a Southern Downs and Granite Belt wine run inland. And for the adventurous, the outback loop to Longreach and Winton trades coast for red-dirt history and dinosaurs.

The verdict

The Brisbane-to-Cairns Pacific Coast Way is the definitive Queensland road trip — about 1,700 km, best over 10 to 14 days, ideally in the dry season, and doable in a regular 2WD. Plan the shape here, get the detail in our Brisbane to Cairns guide, and leave room to be surprised.
