Why it's famous
Whitehaven Beach stretches some seven kilometres along Whitsunday Island and is renowned for its exceptionally pure, fine silica sand, which stays cool underfoot and squeaks as you walk. At the northern end, Hill Inlet's tide draws shifting swirls of white sand through turquoise water — best seen from the lookout above.
Getting there
Whitehaven sits on an island, so it is reached by boat or seaplane, most commonly on a day trip from Airlie Beach or the island resorts. Tours typically combine the beach with the Hill Inlet lookout and snorkelling stops.
Leave it as you found it
The beach lies within a national park and marine park. Take all rubbish with you, follow guidance on protected areas, and remember you are on the sea Country of the Ngaro people.
