The Three Capes Track

The Three Capes Track is one of Tasmania’s great coastal walks — roughly 48 km over about four days, following the wild edge of the Tasman Peninsula past some of the tallest dolerite sea cliffs in the southern hemisphere. It is cabin-based, so you walk with a light pack and sleep in comfortable huts, and it begins with a short boat trip from Port Arthur to the trailhead. Big skies, sheer cliffs and ocean views the whole way — plan and book well ahead.

Three Capes Track — FAQ

What is the Three Capes Track?

It is a multi-day walk on the Tasman Peninsula, around 48 km over about four days, following the coast past some of the tallest dolerite sea cliffs in the southern hemisphere. It is cabin-based, so walkers stay in huts along the way rather than camping.

How does the walk start?

It begins with a short boat trip from the Port Arthur Historic Site across to the trailhead, then follows the coast on foot. Check current departure, booking and route details before you go, as they can change.

How hard is the Three Capes Track?

It is a graded, well-built track suited to walkers with reasonable fitness, carrying a day pack between comfortable cabins. There are climbs and long days, so prepare for changeable weather and check current conditions.

Do you need to book?

Yes — the walk uses booked cabins with limited places, so it books out and requires planning ahead. Check current availability and details, or enquire and we’ll help you plan it.

Can you see the capes without the multi-day walk?

Yes — wildlife cruises in Tasman National Park take you along the same towering cliffs from the water, a great option if a multi-day hike isn’t for you.
