Darwin has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons. Dry season is ideal for touring. Wet season can be challenging but offers dramatic landscapes and fewer crowds.
Hire a car or join guided tours to explore beyond Darwin. 4WD recommended for remote areas. Distances are vast - Kakadu is 250km, Litchfield 115km from Darwin.
Budget: $100–$150/day. Mid-range: $200–$300/day. Luxury: $400+/day. Book tours and accommodation ahead during peak dry season (June–August).
Lightweight clothing, sturdy walking shoes, swimwear, SPF 50+ sunscreen, wide-brimmed hat, insect repellent, reusable water bottle, and camera with waterproof protection.
Never swim outside designated areas. Saltwater crocodiles inhabit all Top End waterways. Follow all safety signs, stay with tour groups, and listen to guide instructions.
