Best Time to Visit the World's Top Destinations
The same destination can be a dream in one month and a washout in another. Here's a practical, season-by-season guide to timing your trip for the best weather, the smallest crowds and the best value.
Timing can make or break a holiday. The same destination can be a dream in one month and a washout in another — monsoon rains, peak-season crowds, sky-high airfares or brutal heat all come down to when you go. Travel in the shoulder seasons, on the other hand, and you'll often get better weather, smaller crowds and lower prices all at once.
This is a practical, Australian-focused guide to the best time to visit the world's most popular destinations — what to expect season by season, and how to time your trip for the sweet spot.
For most destinations, the shoulder seasons — the months either side of peak — are the traveller's sweet spot: good weather, thinner crowds and better value. Peak season means the best weather but the biggest prices and queues; off-season means the lowest prices but a real trade-off on weather or access.
Bali & Indonesia
Best time: April to October (dry season). Sunny days, lower humidity and calm seas make this the ideal window for beaches, surfing and temple-hopping. July and August are the busiest and priciest. The wet season (November to March) brings heavy afternoon downpours and humidity, but also greener scenery and lower prices — fine if you don't mind the odd storm.
Thailand
Best time: November to February (cool, dry season). This is the most comfortable time to travel — warm days, low humidity, blue skies. It's also peak season, so book ahead. March to May is intensely hot, and June to October is the green (wet) season with short, heavy downpours and better deals. Note the islands differ: the Gulf coast (Koh Samui) has a slightly different rhythm to the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi).
Vietnam
Best time: it depends on the region. Vietnam stretches over 1,600 km, so there's no single answer. Broadly, spring (February–April) and autumn (August–October) are the safest bets nationwide. The north (Hanoi, Halong Bay) is best in autumn and spring; the centre (Hoi An, Da Nang) is driest from February to August; the south (Ho Chi Minh City) is dry from December to April.
Japan
Best time: spring (late March–April) and autumn (October–November). Spring brings the famous cherry blossoms and mild weather; autumn delivers spectacular foliage and comfortable days — both are peak for good reason. Avoid the June rainy season and the hot, humid peak of summer. Winter is excellent for skiing and hot springs, and for far fewer crowds in the cities.
Singapore
Best time: year-round, with February to April the driest. Being close to the equator, Singapore is hot and humid all year with rain possible any day. There's no bad time to visit — just pick around major events and expect a tropical downpour or two. It's a reliable stopover in any season.
Europe (Western & Southern)
Best time: May–June and September–October (shoulder season). This is the traveller's sweet spot — warm but not scorching, long days, and far fewer crowds than the July–August peak. Summer is hot and packed (and increasingly subject to heatwaves in the south); winter is quiet and cold but magical for Christmas markets and ski trips. Remember ETIAS applies from late 2026 for the 30 ETIAS countries.
- Italy, France, Spain
- May–June, September–October for the best balance of weather and crowds
- United Kingdom
- May–September for the warmest, longest days
- Christmas markets
- Late November–December across Germany, Austria and France
New Zealand
Best time: December to February (summer) for the outdoors; June to August for skiing. Summer brings long days ideal for road trips, hiking and the South Island. The shoulder months of March–April and October–November are quieter and still pleasant. Winter is ski season around Queenstown and Wanaka.
Fiji & the South Pacific
Best time: May to October (dry season). Warm, sunny and less humid, with the lowest chance of tropical cyclones. November to April is the wetter, more humid season and the official cyclone window — deals are good, but keep an eye on the forecast.
United States
Best time: it varies by region. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are ideal for most cities. The northeast is glorious in autumn; the southwest deserts are best in spring and autumn (summers are extreme); and for a classic warm-weather trip to California or Florida, late spring and early autumn dodge the worst heat and crowds.

How to Nail Your Timing
- Book flights early for peak season — fares to popular destinations climb fast in school holidays and over major events.
- Target shoulder season for the best all-round value if your dates are flexible.
- Check the monsoon and cyclone calendars for tropical destinations before you commit.
- Watch for local holidays and festivals — they can be the highlight of a trip or the reason everything's booked out.
- Buy travel insurance when you book, not when you fly — see our travel insurance guide for why that matters.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best month to travel overseas from Australia?
It depends entirely on the destination. As a rule, the shoulder seasons — roughly April–June and September–October — offer the best balance of good weather, fewer crowds and lower prices across many popular destinations.
When is the best time to visit Bali?
April to October, Bali's dry season, is the best time — sunny, less humid and ideal for beaches and temples. July and August are the busiest. The wet season (November–March) is cheaper but brings heavy afternoon rain.
When is the cheapest time to travel overseas?
The off-peak or low season for each destination almost always has the cheapest airfares and accommodation. The trade-off is weather or crowds, so shoulder season is often the smarter middle ground.
When should I visit Europe to avoid the crowds?
May–June and September–October are ideal — warm weather without the July–August peak crowds and heat. Remember ETIAS applies to Australians for the 30 ETIAS countries from late 2026.
When is cherry blossom season in Japan?
Cherry blossoms typically bloom from late March to April, though the exact timing shifts each year and moves south to north across the country. It's peak season, so book well ahead.
