Grenada — Travel guide

Grenada Travel Guide

Orientation first: when to go, how long you need and how to get around.

The spice island — nutmeg estates, rainforest waterfalls, an underwater sculpture park and far fewer visitors than its neighbours.

Before you go

When to go

December to May is dry. Grenada sits at the southern edge of the hurricane belt.

  • Dry Dec–May
  • Southern hurricane belt
  • Warm year-round
  • Carnival in August

How long you need

Seven days is plenty. The island is small and unhurried.

  • 7 days
  • One base
  • St George's harbour
  • Grand Anse beach

Getting around

Hire car or taxis. Roads are steep and driving is on the left.

  • Drive on the left
  • Steep interior roads
  • Small island
  • Water taxis

What to do

The underwater sculpture park, nutmeg and chocolate estates, Grand Etang rainforest and Grand Anse beach.

  • Underwater sculpture park
  • Nutmeg processing stations
  • Grand Etang rainforest
  • River Antoine rum

Highlights

Spice country

Nutmeg and mace processing stations still work by hand, and cocoa estates make chocolate on site from tree to bar.

  • Gouyave nutmeg station
  • Belmont and Crayfish Bay estates
  • River Antoine rum distillery
  • Still water-wheel powered

The underwater sculpture park

The world's first, off Molinière Bay, snorkelled or dived, with sculptures now colonised by coral.

  • Snorkel or dive
  • Glass-bottom boat option
  • Reef regeneration project
  • Calm mornings are best

Rainforest and beaches

Grand Etang crater lake and rainforest in the interior, and Grand Anse's two miles of sand near the capital.

  • Grand Etang crater lake
  • Seven Sisters waterfalls
  • Grand Anse beach
  • St George's horseshoe harbour

Planning notes

Grenada sits at the southern edge of the hurricane belt, which gives it a longer safe season than most of the Caribbean, and it receives far fewer visitors than St Lucia or Barbados. St George's is arguably the prettiest harbour town in the region. The island is small enough for a week and unhurried enough that you will not want to rush it. Driving is on the left and the interior roads are steep.
