What Is Floriade?
Australia's most celebrated spring festival has been running since 1988 β the year Parliament House opened and Canberra celebrated its centenary. What began as a civic garden project is now one of Australia's premier annual events.
One Million Blooms
Over a million spring bulbs and annuals are planted each year in elaborate large-scale designs across 4.2 hectares of Commonwealth Park. The display typically takes shape from late July and reaches full glory in early October.
Stunning Setting
Commonwealth Park sits on the northern shores of Lake Burley Griffin, directly opposite Parliament House. The combination of the floral display, the lake and the Parliamentary Triangle creates one of the most photographed vistas in Australia.
Beyond the Flowers
Floriade is a full festival β live music and cultural performances, artisan markets, cooking demonstrations, workshops for children and adults, international food stalls and local producers all feature throughout the four-week event.
A New Theme Every Year
Each Floriade carries a different design theme, which shapes the patterns, species selection and artistic installations throughout the park. The theme is announced several months in advance and always creates its own visual identity.
NightFest After Dark
On selected Thursday to Saturday evenings, Commonwealth Park is transformed with light installations, illuminated flower beds and live entertainment. NightFest is a completely different experience from the daytime event β atmospheric, romantic and memorable.
Fully Accessible
All main pathways through Commonwealth Park are fully accessible. Mobility aids and prams are welcome throughout the event. Accessible parking is available nearby and accessible shuttle buses run on the busiest days.
πΈ Flowers Typically on Display
The exact species mix varies year by year with the chosen theme, but most Floriade displays include combinations of these spring favourites:
π NightFest β Floriade After Dark
For a handful of evenings each October, Commonwealth Park becomes something else entirely. The flower beds are bathed in coloured light, sound installations respond to movement among the blooms, and the lakefront atmosphere is utterly unlike anything Canberra offers during the day.
NightFest runs Thursday through Saturday evenings on selected weeks, gates open at 6pm and close at 10pm. Tickets are required and typically sell out for Saturday sessions β book in advance through the official Floriade website.

Insider Tips for Floriade 2026
Thirty-five years of Floriade, and 10+ years running tours to it. Here is what we actually tell people.
Go on a Weekday
Weekend crowds can be intense, especially on fine October Saturdays. Tuesday to Thursday are dramatically quieter β same flowers, far more space. If you can only do a weekend, aim for Sunday morning early.
Arrive at Opening (9am)
The light is beautiful at 9am. The crowds haven't arrived. The dew is still on the petals. The first hour of the day at Floriade is the best hour, by a significant margin.
Early October for Peak Blooms
Late September is lovely but some varieties are still opening. The first two weeks of October typically see the most complete display β all beds at full colour simultaneously.
Dress in Layers
Canberra spring mornings can be genuinely cold β single-digit temperatures in September and occasionally frost in early October. By midday it can be 20Β°C+. A light puffer or warm jacket that packs small is essential.
Don't Drive to the Park
Weekend parking near Commonwealth Park is extremely limited and expensive. Take public transport, use a ride-share drop-off, or come on a guided tour where parking is never your problem.
Book NightFest Well Ahead
NightFest Saturday sessions sell out 3β4 weeks in advance. Friday sessions last a little longer. If you're planning a NightFest visit, don't leave it until October β book as soon as tickets go on sale in August.
Don't Miss Floriade 2026
One million blooms, four weeks only, one chance each year. Guided day trips from Sydney sell out weeks in advance β secure your place in this year's most spectacular spring experience.

What Floriade Visitors Say
We'd driven to Floriade twice before and it was always a parking nightmare and a rush. This year we came with Cooee from Sydney and it was an entirely different experience β relaxed, informed, and we saw so much more because our guide knew exactly where the best displays were. Won't go any other way.
NightFest was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. The light installations among the flowers β it's hard to describe. Our guide had been to every single NightFest and knew the lighting show sequence so we were always in the right place at the right moment. Magical.
The Floriade and wine combo was a brilliant idea. Flowers in the morning, Murrumbateman Riesling and a vineyard lunch in the afternoon β it was genuinely the best single day of our Canberra trip. Our guide was exceptional at both experiences. Highly recommend.
