What Is Floriade?

Australia's most celebrated spring festival has been running since 1988 β€” the year Parliament House opened and Canberra celebrated its centenary. What began as a civic garden project is now one of Australia's premier annual events.

🌷

One Million Blooms

Over a million spring bulbs and annuals are planted each year in elaborate large-scale designs across 4.2 hectares of Commonwealth Park. The display typically takes shape from late July and reaches full glory in early October.

🏞️

Stunning Setting

Commonwealth Park sits on the northern shores of Lake Burley Griffin, directly opposite Parliament House. The combination of the floral display, the lake and the Parliamentary Triangle creates one of the most photographed vistas in Australia.

🎭

Beyond the Flowers

Floriade is a full festival β€” live music and cultural performances, artisan markets, cooking demonstrations, workshops for children and adults, international food stalls and local producers all feature throughout the four-week event.

🎨

A New Theme Every Year

Each Floriade carries a different design theme, which shapes the patterns, species selection and artistic installations throughout the park. The theme is announced several months in advance and always creates its own visual identity.

πŸŒ™

NightFest After Dark

On selected Thursday to Saturday evenings, Commonwealth Park is transformed with light installations, illuminated flower beds and live entertainment. NightFest is a completely different experience from the daytime event β€” atmospheric, romantic and memorable.

β™Ώ

Fully Accessible

All main pathways through Commonwealth Park are fully accessible. Mobility aids and prams are welcome throughout the event. Accessible parking is available nearby and accessible shuttle buses run on the busiest days.

🌸 Flowers Typically on Display

The exact species mix varies year by year with the chosen theme, but most Floriade displays include combinations of these spring favourites:

🌷 Tulips 🌼 Daffodils πŸ’œ Hyacinths 🌸 Cherry Blossom (Hawthorn) 🌺 Petunias 🌻 Gazanias πŸ’ Pansies 🌿 Snapdragons πŸͺ» Lavender 🌸 Begonias 🌼 Iceland Poppies 🌱 Stock πŸ’› Lobelias 🌺 Alyssum

πŸŒ™ NightFest β€” Floriade After Dark

For a handful of evenings each October, Commonwealth Park becomes something else entirely. The flower beds are bathed in coloured light, sound installations respond to movement among the blooms, and the lakefront atmosphere is utterly unlike anything Canberra offers during the day.

NightFest runs Thursday through Saturday evenings on selected weeks, gates open at 6pm and close at 10pm. Tickets are required and typically sell out for Saturday sessions β€” book in advance through the official Floriade website.

6pm–10pm on selected Thu, Fri and Sat evenings in October
Light installations and illuminated flower beds throughout the park
Live music on multiple stages β€” folk, jazz, acoustic and world music
International food trucks and licensed bar areas
Tickets typically $25–$35 per adult β€” book via floriade.com.au
Saturday sessions almost always sell out β€” book weeks ahead
A completely different experience from the daytime event
Children under 5 free; children 5–15 reduced price

Insider Tips for Floriade 2026

Thirty-five years of Floriade, and 10+ years running tours to it. Here is what we actually tell people.

Tip 01

Go on a Weekday

Weekend crowds can be intense, especially on fine October Saturdays. Tuesday to Thursday are dramatically quieter β€” same flowers, far more space. If you can only do a weekend, aim for Sunday morning early.

Tip 02

Arrive at Opening (9am)

The light is beautiful at 9am. The crowds haven't arrived. The dew is still on the petals. The first hour of the day at Floriade is the best hour, by a significant margin.

Tip 03

Early October for Peak Blooms

Late September is lovely but some varieties are still opening. The first two weeks of October typically see the most complete display β€” all beds at full colour simultaneously.

Tip 04

Dress in Layers

Canberra spring mornings can be genuinely cold β€” single-digit temperatures in September and occasionally frost in early October. By midday it can be 20Β°C+. A light puffer or warm jacket that packs small is essential.

Tip 05

Don't Drive to the Park

Weekend parking near Commonwealth Park is extremely limited and expensive. Take public transport, use a ride-share drop-off, or come on a guided tour where parking is never your problem.

Tip 06

Book NightFest Well Ahead

NightFest Saturday sessions sell out 3–4 weeks in advance. Friday sessions last a little longer. If you're planning a NightFest visit, don't leave it until October β€” book as soon as tickets go on sale in August.

Don't Miss Floriade 2026

One million blooms, four weeks only, one chance each year. Guided day trips from Sydney sell out weeks in advance β€” secure your place in this year's most spectacular spring experience.

What Floriade Visitors Say

β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…

We'd driven to Floriade twice before and it was always a parking nightmare and a rush. This year we came with Cooee from Sydney and it was an entirely different experience β€” relaxed, informed, and we saw so much more because our guide knew exactly where the best displays were. Won't go any other way.

NightFest was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. The light installations among the flowers β€” it's hard to describe. Our guide had been to every single NightFest and knew the lighting show sequence so we were always in the right place at the right moment. Magical.

The Floriade and wine combo was a brilliant idea. Flowers in the morning, Murrumbateman Riesling and a vineyard lunch in the afternoon β€” it was genuinely the best single day of our Canberra trip. Our guide was exceptional at both experiences. Highly recommend.

Floriade 2026 FAQs

When is Floriade 2026?

Floriade 2026 runs from Saturday 19 September to Sunday 18 October 2026 β€” exactly four weeks. The event is held daily in Commonwealth Park, Canberra, from 9am to 5:30pm. Entry to the main floral display is free. NightFest (ticketed evening event) runs on selected Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings in October.

Is Floriade free?

The main daytime Floriade event in Commonwealth Park is completely free β€” no ticket required. Some individual workshops, craft activities and food stalls within the precinct have separate costs. NightFest (evening sessions on selected weekends) requires a paid ticket, typically $25–$35 for adults, less for children. Tickets are available through the official Floriade website at floriade.com.au.

How many flowers are at Floriade?

Over one million spring bulbs and annuals are planted across 4.2 hectares of Commonwealth Park each year. The display includes tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, pansies, petunias, begonias, snapdragons and many other spring species arranged in large-scale themed designs. The exact species mix varies with each year's theme.

Can I do a day trip to Floriade from Sydney?

Yes β€” Cooee Tours runs dedicated Floriade day trips from Sydney CBD throughout the event season (19 September–18 October 2026). The coach departs Circular Quay at 7am and returns approximately 9:30pm, giving you around 6 hours in Canberra including guided time at Floriade, a lakefront lunch and a Parliament House visit. Book early β€” these trips sell out, particularly on October weekends.

What is the best week to visit Floriade?

The first two weeks of October β€” roughly 3–16 October β€” typically see the most complete and colourful display, with the full complement of spring annuals and late-season tulips all open simultaneously. Late September is beautiful for early tulips and daffodils but some varieties haven't fully opened yet. Weekdays are significantly less crowded than weekends throughout the season.

How do I get to Commonwealth Park for Floriade?

The easiest options: take an ACTION bus (Canberra's public bus network) from anywhere in the city β€” several routes stop at or near Commonwealth Park. Floriade shuttle buses also run from the City Bus Interchange on peak days. By ride-share: set your drop-off for the Constitution Avenue side of Commonwealth Park. By car: park at Civic or on the North shore and walk or take the shuttle β€” parking directly near the park is very limited on weekends. Coming with Cooee Tours: transport and drop-off is all handled for you.
