Byron Bay, NSW — 2026

Australia's Most Beautiful Coastal Town Has More Than Beaches

Byron Bay occupies a singular position on the Australian east coast — both literally and spiritually. Perched at the continent's most easterly point where the Pacific rolls in uninterrupted from South America, it's a place of extraordinary natural beauty that has managed to stay fiercely itself through decades of growth. You arrive for the beaches and leave knowing you only scratched the surface.

The Cape Byron headland rises 94 metres above the sea, offering the first sunrise on mainland Australia every morning. Offshore, the protected marine reserve at Julian Rocks (Nguthungulli) — where warm tropical currents from the Coral Sea collide with cooler temperate waters — produces one of the most biodiverse snorkelling sites on the entire east coast. Inland, lush hinterland rainforests tumble over ancient basalt plateaux, hiding waterfalls, wildlife, and villages so picturesque they barely seem real.

Cooee Tours curates the finest guided experiences across Byron Bay and the Northern Rivers region in 2026 — from sunrise lighthouse walks and sea kayaking with dolphins to hinterland waterfall tours, whale watching, hot air ballooning, and skydiving above the lighthouse headland.

Julian Rocks — Nguthungulli Marine Reserve

Just 2.5 km offshore from Byron Bay's Main Beach, Julian Rocks (Nguthungulli) is a protected marine reserve and one of the most biodiverse dive and snorkel sites on Australia's east coast. The rocks sit at the extraordinary convergence of warm tropical Coral Sea currents from the north and cooler temperate waters from the south, producing a collision of species from both ecosystems. Sea turtles are almost guaranteed; leopard sharks rest on the sandy bottom; eagle rays glide through the water column; and schools of tropical fish fill every crevice. The site holds deep cultural significance for the local Bundjalung people as an important ancestral location.

Whale Watching Byron Bay

Byron Bay sits directly on the humpback whale highway — the annual migration route that carries thousands of whales north to their tropical breeding grounds (June–September) and south again to Antarctic feeding waters (September–November). From the Cape Byron headland you can often see spouts and breaches with the naked eye, but a dedicated whale watching boat tour puts you alongside these 40-tonne creatures at close range. Many vessels carry hydrophones so you can hear the famous whale songs underwater while the animals swim beneath you. Dolphins are present year-round and frequently join the tours.

Common Questions

Byron Bay Visitor FAQ

Everything you need to plan your 2026 Byron Bay experience.

Byron Bay is rewarding year-round, but each season has a signature experience. Winter (June–August) is the unmissable whale watching window, with humpbacks almost guaranteed on boat tours and frequently visible from the Cape Byron headland. Autumn (March–May) offers warm water, few crowds, and excellent conditions across all activities. Summer brings long days and the best beginner surfing waves. Spring (September–November) sees the whales heading south and the water warming up beautifully.

Julian Rocks — known in the Bundjalung language as Nguthungulli — sits 2.5 km offshore from Byron Bay's Main Beach. It's a protected marine reserve and one of the most biodiverse snorkel and dive sites on Australia's east coast. The rocks lie at the collision point of warm tropical currents from the north and cooler temperate water from the south, producing extraordinary species diversity. Expect sea turtles (very common), leopard sharks resting on the sandy bottom, eagle rays, wobbegong sharks, and hundreds of tropical fish species. In whale season, humpbacks frequently swim around the rocks too.

The Cape Byron Walking Track is 3.7 kilometres, rated Grade 3 by the NSW National Parks service, and takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours return depending on how long you spend at the lighthouse and lookouts along the way. The track is clearly signposted and involves some steep sections and stairs. It can be accessed from the Cape Byron State Conservation Area or Palm Valley car park. Arriving at sunrise means you'll be among the first people in mainland Australia to see the sun rise — an experience many visitors describe as genuinely moving.

The Byron Bay Hinterland refers to the lush, green interior landscape 20–60 minutes inland from Byron Bay, including Nightcap National Park (the largest remaining lowland subtropical rainforest in NSW), Minyon Falls (a spectacular 100-metre waterfall), Crystal Castle and Shambhala Gardens, and the charming villages of Bangalow, Mullumbimby, Nimbin, and Uki. Much of this landscape forms part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia — a UNESCO World Heritage Area. Our hinterland day tours combine the best of these experiences in a single expertly guided day.

Yes — Byron Bay has a resident pod of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins that are present year-round. They frequently surf the breaks at The Pass, swim alongside sea kayakers, and can sometimes be spotted from the Cape Byron headland. A guided sea kayaking tour gives the best chance of a close encounter, as dolphins are drawn to the activity of the kayaks and regularly interact with tour groups. During whale season, pods of dolphins often accompany the whale watching boats too.

The Byron Bay Farmers Market runs every Thursday morning from 7:00 am to 11:00 am at the Butler Street Reserve in Byron Bay town centre. It's a community institution with local producers selling tropical fruit, organic vegetables, fresh bread, artisan cheese, coffee, and prepared foods. The Byron Community Market — a larger market with 300+ stalls of arts, crafts, clothing, and food — runs on the first Sunday of every month (with additional markets in December and January). If you're in Byron on a Thursday morning, the Farmers Market is not to be missed.
