A sunrise flight
Flights launch at dawn, when the air is calmest, and last around 45 to 60 minutes aloft — though you'll set aside about four hours for the early start, briefing, flight and a celebratory sparkling breakfast afterwards. From the basket you drift over the vineyards and farmland with the whole valley spread below. Prices start from around $299 per person, and it's weather-dependent, so flexibility helps.
The balloon operators
Two established operators lead the field: Balloon Aloft, which launches from Peterson House at Pokolbin, and Beyond Ballooning, based near Lovedale — with Hunter Valley Ballooning also flying the valley. All use licensed commercial pilots and run dawn flights year-round, weather permitting. Because balloons carry limited passengers and mornings book out, it's worth reserving well ahead, especially for weekends and special occasions.
Good to know
Set an early alarm — you'll meet before dawn. Dress in layers and closed shoes (mornings are cool, even in summer), and be ready for the flight to be rescheduled if the weather doesn't cooperate. You'll need to be able to climb into the basket and stand for the flight; check any age or height minimums with your operator. Bring a camera — the light at sunrise is magical.
