Hinterland vs Coast

Surf and sand, or rainforest and villages? They’re barely half an hour apart — so the real question isn’t which, but how to split your time between the two.

Hinterland vs Coast

The magic of the Northern Rivers is that you never really have to choose. The coast gives you warm surf, patrolled beaches, the lighthouse cape and the easy pulse of Byron. The hinterland, just up the road, trades all that for rainforest, waterfalls, heritage villages and long green views. They’re barely half an hour apart — so the real question isn’t which, but how to split your time. Here’s how to weigh them.

Good to Know

Hinterland vs Coast — FAQ

Hinterland or coast — which should I choose?

You don’t have to choose. The coast is beaches, surf, the cape and the town; the hinterland is rainforest, waterfalls and heritage villages. Most visitors do both — coast in the morning, hinterland in the afternoon.

How do you split your time between them?

On a single day, do the coast early and the hinterland after lunch. Over a weekend, give each a full day. See a weekend in Byron and beyond for a two-day plan.

How far is the hinterland from the coast?

It’s close — Bangalow is only about 15 minutes inland from Byron, and the rainforest villages and waterfalls of the hinterland are generally within an hour. A car makes combining the two easy.

Which suits families, and which suits couples?

The coast’s patrolled beaches suit families — see family things to do — while the hinterland’s long lunches, galleries and rainforest walks lean romantic. Both work for either; it’s about the mood you’re after.

Can you see Wollumbin (Mount Warning) in the hinterland?

You can admire Wollumbin from lookouts around the Tweed Caldera. The summit walk is permanently closed and the mountain is a sacred site for the Bundjalung people, so please honour the closure and view it respectfully from below. See the Tweed and the caldera.
