The Hinterland

Inland Northern Rivers — where the volcano left its mark

A few kilometres inland from the coast, the country turns into rolling green ridges and deep rainforest valleys carved by the ancient Wollumbin shield volcano. This is where the region's heritage villages, oldest forests and best waterfalls live.

Heritage villages on volcanic soil

The Northern Rivers hinterland is the country between Byron and the Tweed Range — fertile red soil that turned the region first into the largest stretch of subtropical rainforest in Australia (the Big Scrub), then into dairy and macadamia country, and now into a remarkable concentration of heritage villages, hatted restaurants and World Heritage rainforest reserves.

Our hinterland tours are designed to give you the best of both — the heritage main streets of Bangalow, Newrybar and Federal alongside the rainforest gorges, waterfalls and lookouts of Nightcap National Park and Whian Whian State Conservation Area. Small group, local guides, the right amount of walking, paired with the right amount of village.

The Villages

Six heritage villages, each its own world

A short drive between each, but tonally and culturally distinct. Our tours rotate through a curated selection — confirmed line-up depends on day, season and what's open.

Heritage main street Bangalow heritage village
📍 12km south-west of Byron ⏱ Cafes from 7am 🏘 Federation architecture

Bangalow

The undisputed queen of the hinterland villages — a near-perfectly preserved Federation main street and the densest concentration of independent producers in the region.

Bangalow sits in the middle of Bangalow Sweet Pork country — the famous heritage-breed pork that's on the menu of half the Northern Rivers' good restaurants. The village itself is a working high street: 100 Mile Table (the 100-mile sourcing radius cafe), Common People Brewing Co., the long-loved Town Restaurant, boutiques selling work from local makers. The Bangalow Sunday Market is one of the area's best.

  • 100 Mile Table cafe
  • Common People Brewing
  • Bangalow Farmers Market (Sat)
  • Bangalow Sunday Market (4th Sun)
  • Federation main street
  • Bangalow Sweet Pork country
Hatted dining Newrybar village Harvest restaurant
📍 20 min south of Bangalow ⏱ Lunch Wed–Sun 🍽 Destination dining

Newrybar

A two-street hamlet that's quietly become one of the most celebrated dining destinations in regional NSW.

Harvest at Newrybar is the reason most visitors come — a hatted restaurant set in a heritage cottage, with an on-site bakery, deli and produce store. The kitchen sources from the surrounding farms (much of it visible from the dining tables) and the menu changes constantly with what's in season. Beyond Harvest, the village holds a small but excellent cluster of design boutiques, gourmet provedores and the regional gallery scene.

Hidden gem Federal village rolling country
📍 15 min west of Bangalow ⏱ Cafe daily 🌳 Quiet country

Federal

Tiny, soulful, almost a secret. Federal is where locals go when they want to disappear into the country for a long lunch.

The village barely has a main street — just a cluster of buildings around the iconic Doma Cafe, a Japanese-influenced country café that's drawn a steady stream of pilgrims for years. Federal sits high in the rolling Byron hinterland with views back across to Wollumbin/Mt Warning, and surrounding it are some of the most beautiful country roads in the region. Often paired on tour with Bangalow or Clunes.

  • Doma Cafe (the icon)
  • Wollumbin views
  • Genuine country quiet
  • Scenic drives all around
  • Off-the-beaten-track
  • Long-lunch territory
Artists' village Clunes village artistic
📍 20 min from Bangalow ⏱ Studios by appointment 🎨 Artistic community

Clunes

A quiet, leafy village with a remarkably strong concentration of working artists, ceramicists and studio shops.

Clunes is the kind of place you'd drive through and miss if you didn't know to stop. Vintage finds, working potter's studios, the small but excellent Clunes Hall, the historic Clunes Pub and surrounding country views to Wollumbin/Mt Warning. Often combined with Federal on premium and private tours for a "tiny villages" themed day.

  • Working artist studios
  • Vintage & antique shops
  • Historic Clunes Pub
  • Federation cottages
  • Wollumbin lookout drive

Alternative culture Mullumbimby village markets
📍 20km north of Byron ⏱ Markets various days 🌱 Holistic hub

Mullumbimby

"Mullum" — the wholefoods, holistic-therapy, organic-markets capital of the Northern Rivers, with its own distinct sub-culture and pace.

Mullumbimby has the alternative-lifestyle energy of Nimbin but with a bigger, working-town infrastructure. Weekly markets, organic grocers, healing arts on every corner, and the impressive Crystal Castle just outside town with its 7-metre golden Buddha, crystal gardens and Shamballa World Peace Stupa. Mullum is a half-day in itself if you let it be — and it's a strong combination with the nearby Brunswick Heads coast and the hinterland waterfalls.

  • Mullumbimby Farmers Market
  • Crystal Castle (10 min away)
  • Organic wholefoods scene
  • Holistic therapy hub
  • Heritage main street
  • Brunswick Heads gateway
Counter-culture icon Nimbin colourful village murals
📍 30km west of Mullumbimby ⏱ Daily, MardiGrass in May 🌈 Aquarius Festival origin

Nimbin

The 1973 Aquarius Festival village — the original Australian counter-culture experiment, still going.

Nimbin is genuinely unique. Colourful murals on every shopfront, the Hemp Embassy, the Djanbung Permaculture Gardens, the Rainbow Cafe, and the dramatic Nimbin Rocks — towering rhyolite volcanic spires roughly 20 million years old that form a striking landscape backdrop. The MardiGrass festival each May draws crowds; outside that, Nimbin is a quiet alternative-lifestyle village. Included on our full-day and combination hinterland tours.

  • Hemp Embassy & Hemp Bar
  • Nimbin Rocks rhyolite spires
  • Djanbung Permaculture Gardens
  • 1970s mural-covered shops
  • MardiGrass (May)
  • Hanging Rock Falls nearby

World Heritage Nightcap National Park rainforest
📍 45 min from Byron ⏱ Open all hours 🌿 Gondwana Rainforests

Nightcap National Park

Part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area — the deep, ancient heart of the hinterland.

Nightcap sits on the southern flanks of the Wollumbin shield volcano. Ancient subtropical rainforest, dramatic rhyolite cliffs, threatened wildlife including Albert's lyrebird and the rare nightcap oak (only recently discovered). The park holds Minyon Falls, Protesters Falls, the Big Scrub Loop walking track, Mt Nardi (817m, sealed road access from Nimbin), and the long-distance Gidjuum Gulganyi multi-day walk. Important: Nightcap Range Road is currently closed due to a 2022 flood landslip — access to Minyon Falls is via Minyon Falls Road only.

  • Minyon Falls (100m plunge)
  • Protesters Falls (1.4km walk)
  • Big Scrub Loop walking track
  • Mt Nardi sealed road access
  • Albert's lyrebird habitat
  • Gidjuum Gulganyi multi-day
100m plunge Minyon Falls 100 metre plunge waterfall
📍 Nightcap National Park ⏱ Open all hours ♿ Wheelchair accessible lookout

Minyon Falls

A spectacular 100-metre plunge waterfall on Repentance Creek — the most famous falls in the Northern Rivers and recently upgraded for accessibility.

Minyon Falls drops 100 metres off the rhyolite cliffs that were once part of the Tweed Volcano, into a heavily forested valley below. Recently upgraded facilities include wheelchair-accessible pathways, graded paths, expanded picnic area, new shelters and increased parking — making this one of the most accessible major waterfalls in NSW. For the more adventurous, the Minyon Loop is a 13km return hike to the base of the falls.

  • 100m plunge waterfall
  • Wheelchair-accessible lookout
  • Upgraded picnic facilities
  • Minyon Loop (13km return)
  • Best after rain
  • Access via Minyon Falls Rd
Rainforest walk Protesters Falls Terania Creek rainforest
📍 Terania Creek, The Channon ⏱ Open all hours 🌿 1.4km rainforest walk

Protesters Falls

Named for the landmark 1979 logging protests that saved the Big Scrub rainforest — a peaceful, easily reached waterfall and the heart of the conservation movement that shaped this region.

Access is via The Channon village. The 1.4km return walking track winds through ancient subtropical rainforest — bangalow palms, towering strangler figs, ferns — to a beautiful waterfall plunging into a deep rainforest pool. Swimming is not permitted: the pool is the habitat of the endangered Fleay's barred frog and human sunscreen and insect repellent are toxic to the species. The atmosphere alone is worth the visit. The picnic area at Terania Creek is one of the loveliest in the region.

  • 1.4km gentle return walk
  • Ancient subtropical rainforest
  • 1979 protests historical site
  • Fleay's barred frog habitat
  • No swimming (protected species)
  • Terania Creek picnic area
Swimming hole Killen Falls cave behind waterfall Tintenbar
📍 Killen Falls Drive, Tintenbar ⏱ Open daylight hours 🏊 Swimming permitted

Killen Falls

The closest waterfall to Byron — a beautiful 10-metre plunge into a deep rainforest pool with a cave behind the falls you can walk into without getting wet.

Killen Falls is the easy crowd-pleaser. A short 660m return walk leads to a lookout platform; a steeper but manageable 1km return takes you to the base of the falls and the cave behind. Swimming is permitted (water levels vary; the pool has a shallow rocky bottom — wear water shoes). The setting is enchanting and the cave-walk is a genuine highlight. 25 minutes from Byron, with picnic tables and toilets at the car park.

  • 10m plunge waterfall
  • Cave behind the falls
  • Swimming permitted
  • 660m return lookout walk
  • 25 min from Byron

Guest Stories

What hinterland guests say after their day

"Did the standard day from the Gold Coast on a Tuesday. Minyon Falls in the morning was breathtaking — the new platforms make it really accessible. Lunch at 100 Mile Table in Bangalow was a highlight. We'd never have discovered Federal without the guide."

Joanna & Pat M.Auckland · Hinterland Villages & Falls

"The premium Harvest day was extraordinary. The hatted lunch was as good as anything in Sydney, the rainforest walk in the morning was peaceful and quiet, and our guide knew the regional politics around the Wollumbin closure beautifully — handled with real respect."

Catherine D.Brisbane · Premium with Harvest

"Took the private two-day option and added Nimbin and Crystal Castle. Nimbin was the most unique experience of our trip to Australia — really glad we had a guide who could give us context. The Mercedes V-Class was so comfortable for the long hinterland drives."

Common Questions

Hinterland tour FAQs

The questions we hear most often before guests book.

Our Byron Bay tours are anchored on the coast — Cape Byron Lighthouse, Wategos Beach, The Pass and the village. This Northern Rivers Hinterland tour goes the other way: inland and uphill into the rolling green pastoral country, the heritage villages (Bangalow, Newrybar, Federal, Clunes, Mullumbimby), the Gondwana World Heritage rainforests of Nightcap National Park and the region's best waterfalls. If your Byron page is the coastal day, this is the inland day. Many guests do both across a long weekend.
Our standard hinterland day rotates through a curated selection drawn from: Bangalow (heritage main street, 100 Mile Table, Common People Brewing), Newrybar (Harvest hatted restaurant and produce store), Federal (Doma Cafe and rolling country views), Clunes (quaint artistic village), Mullumbimby (alternative-lifestyle hub, weekly markets), and Nimbin on full-day combination tours. Final line-up depends on day of week, season and what's open — confirmed at booking.
Yes — but with one important note. Access to Minyon Falls is currently via Minyon Falls Road only, as the Nightcap Range Road has been closed since the 2022 floods due to a major landslip (closure currently extended until July 2026, possibly longer). The recently upgraded Minyon Falls facilities include wheelchair-accessible pathways, graded paths, expanded picnic area, new shelters and increased parking. Our tour vehicles are sized for the current access route. Always check NSW NPWS local alerts before any self-drive visit.
Some yes, some no. Swimming is permitted at Killen Falls (Tintenbar, 25 min from Byron), Whian Whian Falls (near Dunoon) and Hanging Rock Falls (near Nimbin). Swimming is NOT permitted at Protesters Falls in Nightcap National Park — the pool is habitat for the endangered Fleay's barred frog and human chemicals (sunscreen, insect repellent) damage the species. Swimming at the base of Minyon Falls is technically possible but requires a strenuous 13km return hike. We'll always advise what's possible at each stop.
Most stops are short, easy walks. The Minyon Falls lookout is wheelchair-accessible from the upgraded car park. Protesters Falls is a 1.4km gentle rainforest return walk. Killen Falls has a 660m return lookout walk (easy) or a steeper 1km return to the base. The village stops involve flat main-street walking. For more strenuous options (Minyon's 13km loop, the Gidjuum Gulganyi multi-day) we can build a custom tour. Please advise mobility needs at booking.
Nimbin is included on our full-day and combination hinterland tours as one of the village stops. It's a small counter-cultural village that grew out of the 1973 Aquarius Festival, with colourful murals, the Hemp Embassy, the Djanbung Permaculture Gardens, and the dramatic Nimbin Rocks (rhyolite volcanic spires roughly 20 million years old). Nimbin is genuinely unique and worth seeing — we treat it with the respect it deserves and let guests engage at their own comfort level.
Year-round, with each season offering something different. Autumn (Mar–May) gives mild walking weather and the bonus of Easter's Byron Bluesfest happening on the doorstep. Winter (Jun–Aug) is dry, warm by day, with the best chance of clear views of Wollumbin from hinterland lookouts. Spring (Sep–Nov) brings wildflowers in the rainforest and full waterfalls from accumulated rain. Summer (Dec–Feb) is hot, humid and the waterfalls are at full pelt — ideal for swimming holes, less ideal for long walks.
Yes, and many guests do. The most common combination is a 2-day package: Byron Bay Highlights on day one (coast, lighthouse, beaches) and this Hinterland & Villages tour on day two (rainforest, waterfalls, heritage villages). Our private tours can compress both into a single long day if you have limited time, or extend across 3–4 days adding the Food & Farm Trail and Rail Trail experiences. The Byron & Northern Rivers regional pillar page sets out the suggested itineraries.
