Best time to visit Port Stephens
Port Stephens is a genuine year-round destination — dolphins in the bay in every season, whales offshore through the cooler months, and warm beach days in summer. The best time to visit depends on what you're after. Here's a season-by-season guide, with the events and weather to plan around.
The four seasons in Port Stephens
Spring (Sep–Nov) and autumn (Mar–May) are the pick for most visitors — warm, drier and uncrowded, perfect for the beaches, dunes and Tomaree walk. Summer (Dec–Feb) is hot, humid and beach-focused, with the biggest crowds and the boom-net dolphin cruises in full swing. Winter (Jun–Aug) is mild and quiet, and prime whale-watching time. Match the season to your priorities and the bay delivers.
Beating the peak
For the best balance of weather, value and space, aim for the shoulder seasons or travel mid-week. Avoid the Christmas–January holidays and long weekends unless the summer buzz is your goal, and book well ahead for the February game-fishing tournament and the autumn regatta, when the bay is at its busiest. Winter (outside event weekends) is the quietest and best-value time, with mild days ideal for whales, walks and dolphin cruises.
Swimming & the bay
You can swim in Port Stephens for much of the year. The sheltered bay beaches are calm and family-friendly, and the ocean is warmest in late summer (around 23–24°C), cooling to about 18°C in winter (still swimmable, and lovely for a bracing dip). Remember that only One Mile, Fingal and Birubi are patrolled (One Mile year-round), so swim between the flags and avoid the unpatrolled surf beaches if you're unsure.

Spring (September–November) and autumn (March–May) are the sweet spots — warm, pleasant and less crowded than summer, ideal for the beaches, dunes and walks. Summer is peak beach season (and busiest); winter is mild and quiet, and the best time for whale watching. Dolphin watching is superb year-round, so any season delivers.
Mild and sunny. Summers are warm (often 26–29°C) and great for the water, tempered by sea breezes; autumn is pleasantly mild; winters are gentle (around 17–18°C by day, cooler nights, rarely cold); and spring warms up nicely. The bay stays swimmable much of the year, warmest in late summer.
The summer school holidays (especially Christmas–January), Easter and long weekends are busiest, along with big event weekends like the February game-fishing tournament and the autumn sailing regatta. Prices peak and accommodation books out then. For fewer crowds and better value, visit in the shoulder seasons or mid-week.
Dolphins are resident year-round, so a dolphin cruise works in any season. Whales migrate past from May to November, with peaks around June–July and September–October. Winter and spring therefore offer the rare combination of mild weather, whales offshore and dolphins in the bay.
