The beaches of Port Stephens
Port Stephens is ringed by beaches — sheltered bay coves for easy swimming, long ocean beaches for surf and space, and the dramatic dune-backed sands of Anna Bay. From family-friendly Shoal Bay to the wild surf beneath Tomaree Head, here's how to pick the right stretch, and the safety essentials to know before you go in.
Shoal Bay, Little Beach & the bay
Inside the bay, the water is calm and clear. Shoal Bay is the main swimming beach — a gentle, family-friendly arc backed by cafés and the resort strip. Little Beach and Fly Point at Nelson Bay are sheltered spots loved for swimming, snorkelling and sunset. These bay beaches are ideal for young families and relaxed days, though they're not surf-patrolled, so supervise children closely.
Fingal, One Mile, Zenith & Box
On the ocean side, the surf beaches are superb. One Mile Beach is a long, gorgeous stretch — and the only beach patrolled year-round. Fingal Bay curves out toward its famous spit, while Zenith and Box, tucked beneath Tomaree Head, are wilder favourites with surfers. Note that Zenith and Box are unpatrolled, and Fingal and Birubi are patrolled only in the warmer months — so swim between the flags and mind the conditions.
Birubi, the dunes & the Fingal Spit
Birubi Beach at Anna Bay is the spectacular southern gateway to the Stockton sand dunes — patrolled in season and backed by that vast wall of sand. One firm warning, though: the Fingal Spit, the sand bar out to Fingal Island, is extremely dangerous and has claimed lives. It floods on the incoming tide, and channels can appear even when the water looks calm — never cross if any water is over the sandbar. Reach the island by boat or tour instead, and always check the latest NPWS alerts.

It depends on your mood. Shoal Bay is the calm, family-friendly main swimming beach; Fingal Bay and One Mile Beach are long, beautiful surf beaches; Zenith and Box are wilder surf spots beneath Tomaree; and Birubi Beach at Anna Bay is the dramatic dune-backed sweep at the edge of the Stockton Bight. Little Beach at Nelson Bay is a lovely sheltered swim.
Only three. One Mile Beach is patrolled by professional lifeguards year-round, while Birubi Beach and Fingal Beach are patrolled from roughly September to April (volunteer surf lifesavers, mainly weekends and holidays). Zenith and Box beaches are unpatrolled surf beaches, and the bay beaches like Shoal Bay are sheltered rather than surf-patrolled. Always swim between the flags where they're present.
Only with extreme caution — and often not at all. The Fingal Spit, the sand bar to Fingal Island, is extremely dangerous: it floods on the incoming tide, and people have drowned crossing it. Do not cross in either direction if there is any water over the sandbar, even if it looks calm — tides and channels change fast. The safe way to reach the island is by boat or tour. Always check conditions and NPWS alerts first.
