Australia's most famous outback horse racing event, held annually in September in the tiny town of Birdsville (population ~115) in far western Queensland. The races attract around 6,000 visitors, creating a legendary atmosphere of bush culture, community spirit, and outback hospitality. It's part sporting event, part outback festival, part pilgrimage.
The largest sand dune in the Simpson Desert — a 40-metre wall of blazing red sand on the edge of Birdsville. Watching the sunset from Big Red is one of the iconic Australian outback experiences and a highlight of the tour. You can walk part-way up for extraordinary views across the desert. Access is by 4WD transfer from camp.
Safari-style tent accommodation with stretcher beds at the Birdsville campsite — pre-erected and ready when you arrive. Shared amenities. This is outback camping with a level of comfort, not a hotel. You'll need to bring your own sleeping bag, pillow, and torch. The night sky above camp more than makes up for the lack of room service.
Moderate fitness. The tour involves short to moderate walks on sandy, uneven ground, steps in and out of coaches, and exposure to heat, dust, and wind. The racetrack and campsite are on desert terrain. Please contact us before booking if you have mobility or medical concerns.
