Where to stay in Airlie Beach
Where you base yourself sets the tone. On the mainland you can be in the heart of the action, tucked away somewhere quieter, or on a calm marina — all within a few minutes of each other. Or you can head out to a Whitsunday island resort. Here's how to choose.
Airlie Beach town centre
The town centre puts you within walking distance of everything — the tour boats, the free lagoon, the Saturday markets, the restaurants and the nightlife. It has the widest range of stays, from lively backpacker hostels to mid-range and boutique apartments with marina and bay views. It's the best base for first-timers, solo travellers, couples and anyone without a car who wants to be in the middle of it.
Cannonvale & Port of Airlie
Cannonvale, a few minutes west along the boardwalk or by bus, is quieter and more residential, with holiday parks, roomy self-contained apartments and better value — ideal for families and groups (a car helps). Port of Airlie is a modern marina precinct a short, flat walk from the main street, with apartments overlooking the water and the ferry terminal on your doorstep — a calm choice for couples who still want town close by.
Or stay on an island
For a beach on your doorstep and a proper resort escape, base on a Whitsunday island — lively, family-friendly Hamilton; close-in Daydream; the luxury of InterContinental Hayman; or intimate Long Island. Three main mainland choices. Airlie Beach town centre is the most walkable — steps from the lagoon, markets, tour departures and nightlife, with everything from hostels to boutique apartments. Cannonvale, a few minutes west, is quieter and better value, good for families. Port of Airlie is a calm marina precinct a short walk from town. Or stay out on an island resort.
The mainland (Airlie/Cannonvale/Port of Airlie) is more affordable, central for tours and full of dining and nightlife — ideal for most trips. An island resort (Hamilton, Daydream, Hayman, Long Island) gives you a beach on the doorstep and a more immersive, resort-style stay, at a higher price. Yes — Cannonvale in particular suits families, with holiday parks, self-contained apartments and more space, a short bus ride or boardwalk from town. The free Airlie Beach Lagoon is a safe swim for kids, and Daydream and Hamilton islands are family-friendly resort options. Airlie's nightlife is easy to sidestep by day.
The town has waterfront accommodation overlooking the marina, the lagoon and Pioneer Bay, but not a swimming beach (the foreshore is tidal). For genuine beachfront and swimming, look to the island resorts (Whitehaven-style sand is on the islands) or use the free foreshore Lagoon in town.
Three to five nights lets you do Whitehaven, a sailing day and a reef trip without rushing, plus enjoy the town. If you're adding a multi-day liveaboard sail or an island-resort stay, allow more. Splitting a few nights in town with a couple on an island is a popular combination.
