South Bank Parklands, Streets Beach & GOMA
Start at South Bank Parklands and walk the Boardwalk along the Brisbane River. Streets Beach — the only inner-city artificial beach in Australia — is worth a look. Then visit GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art — free entry to the permanent collection, one of Australia's finest art institutions) and the Queensland Museum for cultural and natural history context before exploring further.
CBD, Story Bridge & Howard Smith Wharves
Cross the Goodwill Bridge on foot into the CBD. Eagle Street Pier for lunch with river views, then walk north to Howard Smith Wharves — Brisbane's most atmospheric precinct, built into the cliff face beneath the Story Bridge. Walk across the bridge (20 minutes) for the city view and return via the river path.
Mt Coot-tha Lookout
Rideshare 7km west of the CBD to Brisbane's finest panoramic viewpoint. The entire city, Moreton Bay, and the Glass House Mountains on the northern horizon spread before you as the city turns gold. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset. Stay for dinner at the lookout restaurant — book ahead on weekends for a view table.

Tamborine Mountain sits 525 metres above the coast with a completely different climate, working boutique wineries, rainforest walking tracks (Curtis Falls, 40 minutes return through subtropical forest), Gallery Walk, and views across the entire Gold Coast that are genuinely breathtaking. Drop-off at your Brisbane hotel around 5:30pm. The Gold Coast light rail connects Broadbeach South to Helensvale, then Queensland Rail to Brisbane (~80 minutes total) — a good option if you want to extend the evening independently.

📅 Best Arrival Day
Arrive Tuesday evening so Day 4 falls on Wednesday (Eumundi Markets). Saturday arrivals also work well — Saturday markets have 600+ stalls. The market day timing is the single most consequential planning decision in this itinerary.
✈️ Getting to Brisbane
Brisbane Airport is well-connected internationally and domestically. The Airtrain connects the airport to the CBD in 22 minutes ($20 one-way). Most CBD hotels are within walking distance of Central or Roma Street stations.
🏨 Where to Stay
South Bank is ideal — walking distance to GOMA, the river, and Parklands. All Cooee Tours collect from Brisbane CBD and inner South Bank hotels. Fortitude Valley is excellent for dining access on Days 1 and 5.

Book Cooee Tours first — popular dates fill weeks ahead. Australia Zoo tours sell out completely in school holiday periods. Sunshine Coast Wednesday/Saturday is the most popular single departure. Book tours, then accommodation around confirmed dates.
The day trips are where the budget goes. A hire car spreads across a group and suits families; guided days cost more per head but remove the driving, the parking and the navigation, and on the wine days they remove the designated-driver problem entirely.
The largest variable is how many guided days you take versus how much you drive yourself. Public transport across Brisbane is 50 cents a journey, and the city days on this itinerary can be done for almost nothing beyond food — South Bank, the Cultural Centre galleries, the Botanic Gardens and Mt Coot-tha are all free.
What Five Days Costs
Day tours with capacity limits — anything advertising a maximum of twelve guests — go the same way. City-based activities, restaurants and the free attractions are all far more forgiving and can be settled once you arrive.
Some elements of a five-day Queensland plan need to be locked in earlier than others. Australia Zoo animal encounters, whale-watching sailings in the June-to-November window, and vehicle ferry spaces to the bay islands all sell out well ahead, particularly across school holidays.
Booking Order and What Sells Out
The heaviest days on this itinerary are the coast runs — the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast both involve real driving at both ends. Putting a Brisbane city day between them gives everyone a morning without an early alarm.
Five consecutive day trips is more travel than most people want, and the common mistake is filling every day. Two full day trips with a city day between them produces a better trip than three back-to-back, particularly with children or anyone who tires on long drives.
Pacing Five Days Without Burning Out
The hinterland is the counter-intuitive one: rainforest is better in rain than out of it, and Springbrook, Lamington and the Blackall Range are all more atmospheric under low cloud. The stops that genuinely need clear skies are the lookouts and the beaches.
The city days are the wet-weather fallback — the Cultural Centre row alone holds most of a day indoors at no cost, and a river cruise runs regardless. Swap a coastal day for a city day and nothing is lost.
Five days almost guarantees at least one poor-weather day in summer, and the itinerary absorbs it easily if you keep the order flexible rather than fixed.
Adjusting for Weather Across Five Days
What is not practical without a vehicle is the hinterland — the Blackall Range villages, Tamborine and the Scenic Rim. Those are the days where a guided tour is the answer rather than a preference.
Of the day trips, the Gold Coast is a direct train with light rail up the strip, Australia Zoo is the Nambour line to Beerwah, and the Glass House Mountains sit on the same line. The Sunshine Coast is reachable by train to Nambour or Landsborough, though connections up to Noosa are slower and less frequent.
The itinerary works on public transport more easily than most visitors assume. The Brisbane city days are entirely covered by the CityCat, CityHopper and buses at 50 cents a journey.
