9:30 AM — Start at Picnic Point, Not the Gardens
It sounds counterintuitive, but trust us: begin at Picnic Point Lookout on the eastern edge of the city. You arrive before the crowds, the morning light over the Lockyer Valley is superb, and a cuppa with that view sets the tone for the day. It also puts you at the top of the range, working your way into the city with the traffic rather than against it.
10:15 AM — Queens Park While the Light Is Soft
Head straight to the Carnival's centrepiece while the beds are at their photogenic best. Give yourself a full 90 minutes: the formal displays, the rotunda, the adjoining Botanic Gardens if you're quick on your feet. This is the busiest garden of the festival — being here before midday makes a real difference.
12:00 PM — Lunch in the Festival Precinct
You're now in the heart of the Carnival with options in every direction: market stalls and street food around the park, or a proper sit-down at one of the CBD cafés a short walk away (our café guide has the shortlist). Give yourself about 90 minutes to eat, browse the markets and catch the street entertainment.
1:45 PM — Laurel Bank Park
The afternoon belongs to Laurel Bank — more intimate than Queens Park, with themed displays, floral archways and the scented garden. It's compact enough to enjoy thoroughly in an hour without rushing.
2:45 PM — The Decorated Homes Drive
Finish with the Carnival's best-kept open secret: the suburban streets where residents dress their homes and gardens for the season. It's a driving experience — the displays are spread across the city — and it's the part of the day visitors most often say surprised them.
3:15 PM — Head Down the Range
Leaving by mid-afternoon means you're ahead of the exodus and back on the coast by early evening — tired, full of photos, and already planning next year.
