Where to stay in Hobart

Hobart is compact, so location is everything. Stay central — on or near the waterfront — and you'll walk to Salamanca, Battery Point, the dining and the MONA ferry, keeping a car free for day trips. From luxury harbour hotels to heritage boutiques, leafy Sandy Bay and the buzzy North Hobart strip, here's how to choose your base.

The best base

Waterfront, Salamanca & Battery Point

The waterfront and Sullivans Cove are the prime choice — celebrated design and "storytelling" hotels on the docks, and everything a short walk away. Alongside, Salamanca and Battery Point offer heritage boutique stays and self-contained cottages with real character, steps from the market and the harbour. It's the most convenient and atmospheric area for a first trip. See our getting around guide.

Other neighbourhoods

CBD, Sandy Bay, North Hobart & MONA

Beyond the harbour, the CBD is convenient and well-priced; leafy Sandy Bay offers water views and the landmark Wrest Point (Australia's first legal casino, opened 1973); and North Hobart is the city's dining and entertainment strip, great for foodies. For something unique, the Pavilions at MONA let you sleep on the museum estate among the art and vines. Match the area to your trip — we're happy to advise. See our MONA guide.

Booking tips

Book ahead for the peaks

Hobart's best stays sell out early for Dark Mofo (June) and the New Year period, when rates also rise, so lock those dates in months ahead. Outside the peaks — winter weekdays and the shoulder seasons — you'll find more choice and better value. Whatever your dates and budget, we can secure the right base and build the trip around it. Good to know

Where to stay in Hobart: your questions

For most first-time visitors, the waterfront and Sullivans Cove are ideal — you can walk to Salamanca, Battery Point, restaurants and the MONA ferry. Salamanca and Battery Point add heritage character, the CBD is convenient and well-priced, Sandy Bay is leafy with water views, and North Hobart is the buzzy dining strip. There's even accommodation at MONA itself. See our things to do.

Base yourself central — on or near the waterfront. From Sullivans Cove or Salamanca you can walk to the market, the docks, Battery Point and the dining, and hop straight on the MONA ferry, leaving a hire car parked for day trips. It's the most convenient and atmospheric choice, with options from luxury harbour hotels to boutique stays and apartments. See our getting around guide.

The full range: luxury waterfront hotels (including celebrated design and "storytelling" hotels on the docks), boutique and heritage stays in Salamanca and Battery Point, convenient CBD hotels, self-contained apartments and cottages (great for families and longer stays), and unique options like the Pavilions at MONA. There's something for every budget, though the best places book out early for peak dates.

Yes — MONA offers on-site accommodation, the Pavilions, luxury rooms set among the vines and art on the Berriedale estate, so you can enjoy the museum, restaurants and the Moorilla winery without leaving. It's a special (and premium) experience about 15 minutes north of the city, and understandably popular, so book well ahead. See our MONA guide.

As early as you can for peak dates. Hobart's hotels fill and prices climb around Dark Mofo (11–22 June 2026) and the New Year period (Sydney to Hobart and Taste of Summer), often months in advance. Outside those windows there's more availability and better value, especially on winter weekdays and in the shoulder seasons. We can secure the right stay as part of your trip. See our best time to visit guide.
