The Best Indigenous Cultural Experiences in Australia

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are the oldest living cultures on Earth. These Traditional Owner-led experiences let you listen, learn and see Country through its First Peoples' eyes.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have cared for this continent for tens of thousands of years, holding the oldest continuing cultures on the planet. The most meaningful way to encounter that depth is on a Traditional Owner-led experience — one owned and guided by the people whose Country you're standing on, where the income stays in community and the stories are theirs to tell.

We've focused on experiences led by First Nations operators across the country, including one on our home turf in Moreton Bay. A note on respect: follow your guide's lead, ask before photographing people, never photograph or enter sacred sites where asked not to, and listen more than you speak. These are living cultures, not exhibits.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best Aboriginal cultural experiences in Australia?

Traditional Owner-led experiences are the most meaningful — the Mossman Gorge Dreamtime Walk, Anangu-guided experiences at Uluru, the palawa-led wukalina Walk in Tasmania, and guided rock art at Kakadu are all outstanding. Look for tours owned and led by First Nations people.

Why choose a Traditional Owner-led tour?

Because the culture is shared on its owners' terms, by the people whose Country you're on, and the income supports their community. It's both the most authentic and the most respectful way to engage with First Nations culture.

Can you see Aboriginal rock art in Australia?

Yes — Kakadu's Ubirr and Nourlangie hold some of the oldest art on Earth, and the Grampians (Gariwerd) in Victoria has rich rock art too. It's far more meaningful with a Traditional Owner guide who can explain its stories and significance.

Are there Indigenous cultural experiences near Brisbane?

Yes — Quandamooka guides share their saltwater culture on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) in Moreton Bay, on Cooee Tours' home turf and close to Brisbane.

How should I behave respectfully on a cultural tour?

Follow your guide's lead, ask before photographing people, never photograph or enter sacred sites where asked not to, don't remove anything from Country, and listen more than you speak. Some stories and places are restricted, and that should always be respected.

Travelling respectfully on Country

The most rewarding First Nations experiences are led by Traditional Owners themselves, so the cultural knowledge is shared on their terms and the benefit stays in community. A few simple principles go a long way: follow your guide's lead, ask before photographing people, never photograph or enter sites you're asked not to, and remember that some stories and places are restricted and not yours to share.

Above all, come to listen. These are the oldest living cultures on Earth, and engaging with them with humility and an open mind is one of the most meaningful things you can do as a visitor to this country.

Cooee Tours acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and their continuing connection to land, sea and community. We pay our respects to Elders past and present, and recognise that the places described here hold deep cultural significance for the First Peoples who have cared for them for tens of thousands of years.
