Sydney to Melbourne via Australia's busiest interstate highway, 880 kilometres of sealed motorway with four heritage-grade Big Things along the way. The Big Merino at Goulburn (saved from demolition, 2007). The Dog on the Tuckerbox at Gundagai (1932 pre-genre precursor). The Big Ned Kelly at Glenrowan (on the actual 1880 siege site). Giant Koala at Dadswells Bridge (1989, renamed "Sam" for the Black Saturday fires). Two states, 2–3 days, every major heritage Big Thing on the route.
If the East Coast Trail (Pacific Highway) is the family-friendly classic, the Hume is the heritage drive — older icons, more historical depth, fewer kids' theme parks. The Big Merino, the Tuckerbox, and the Big Ned Kelly all carry serious cultural weight.
The Big Merino at Goulburn, the Dog on the Tuckerbox at Gundagai, and the Big Ned Kelly at Glenrowan. The route's heritage-grade trio.
15.2 metres × 18 metres of fibreglass merino ram, modelled on a stud ram called Rambo. Relocated 2007 to save him from the Hume bypass — a major heritage-conscious save.

The comfortable 3-day version. Can be done in 2 days if you skip the Giant Koala detour, or expanded to 4 days with extra time in NE Victoria's wine country.
Morning departure from Sydney. 1hr 30min south to Goulburn for the Big Merino (1 hour visit — interior climb, gift shop). Continue 1hr 45min to Gundagai for the Dog on the Tuckerbox (30 minutes, including the small museum). 1 hour to Wagga Wagga for the night.
Morning departure. 2 hours south to Glenrowan for the Big Ned Kelly and the 1880 siege site (allow 2–3 hours for the animatronic show and museum). Lunch in Glenrowan or Wangaratta. Afternoon and evening in nearby Beechworth — historic gold-rush town, excellent food and wine, recommended overnight base.
Easy morning. Drive 3 hours south to Melbourne via the Hume Motorway. Arrive Melbourne by lunchtime. Drop-off car, begin Melbourne stay or fly out.
The Giant Koala at Dadswells Bridge requires a major detour west from the Hume Highway — 2hr 30min from Glenrowan via Ballarat. Adds 4–5 hours to the route and best done as part of a longer Victorian loop (Hume → Glenrowan → Ballarat → Grampians → Giant Koala → return to Melbourne via Hamilton).
From Goulburn, Canberra is a 1-hour detour south. If you have an extra day, swing through the National Gallery (Skywhale if scheduled), the Australian War Memorial, and Old Parliament House. Rejoin the Hume at Yass.
From Wagga Wagga, a side trip down the Murray River brings you to Albury (1 hour), the Big Mango at Mataranka — wait, that's NT. To Tocumwal for the other Big Murray Cod (2 hours south). Worth it for serious Big Things completists.
Year-round drivable but best in spring (September–November) or autumn (March–May). Sealed M31 motorway throughout. One-way Sydney–Melbourne car hire is standard.
Into Sydney, out of Melbourne. One of Australia's most-flown city pairs.
