The comfortable 7-day version. Most travellers add 2–3 days for reef trips, Fraser Island, and Magnetic Island. Best done May–September (dry, mild) — wet season (December–March) brings stinger jellyfish and possible cyclone disruption.
Pickup hire car at Brisbane Airport. 1hr 30min north to Woombye for the Big Pineapple (allow 4 hours). Continue 30 min to Noosa. Overnight Sunshine Coast.
Optional morning at Noosa beaches or the Big Pelican on the Noosa River. Drive 3 hours north to Hervey Bay (Fraser Island gateway). Overnight Hervey Bay.
Long driving day — 5 hours north via Bundaberg (optional 1 hour stop). Arrive Rockhampton mid-afternoon. Big Bull (15 min photo). Overnight Rockhampton or push on to Mackay (2 more hours).
4 hours north through cattle country to Mackay, then 2 more to Airlie Beach (Whitsundays gateway). Settle in for 2 nights — recommended Whitsundays day cruise on Day 5.
Morning Whitsundays cruise (whitehaven beach + reef snorkel) from Airlie Beach. Afternoon drive 1hr north to Bowen for the Big Mango photo. Return to Airlie Beach for second night, or push on to Townsville (3 hours further).
4 hours north via Townsville (lunch stop, optional Magnetic Island). Continue 2 hours to Mission Beach for the Big Cassowary and overnight in the wet tropics. Rainforest meets Coral Sea.
Easy 2 hours north through banana plantations to Cairns. Big Marlin at Trinity Inlet (20 min). Settle in Cairns. Plan reef day for Day 8.
Most travellers add Fraser Island (2 days from Hervey Bay), Magnetic Island (1 day from Townsville), and an outer Great Barrier Reef trip from Cairns (1 day). A full 10-day itinerary captures these properly.
Best time May–September (dry, mild, no stingers). Avoid December–March wet season (cyclones, stinger jellyfish in coastal waters). Sealed Bruce Highway throughout — any rental car suitable.
