An hour north-east of Melbourne, the Yarra Valley is Victoria's premier wine region — a green, cool-climate valley of vineyards, produce and forest that was the state's very first wine district, planted back in 1838. It's famous for elegant pinot, chardonnay and sparkling, but there's far more than wine: an acclaimed gin distillery and chocolaterie, the beloved Healesville Sanctuary, dawn balloon flights over misty vines, and the towering redwoods and rivers of the Upper Yarra. Cool-climate cellar doors
Wine is the heart of it. The Yarra Valley's cool climate produces some of Australia's most elegant pinot noir, chardonnay and sparkling, poured across 50-plus cellar doors — from the sparkling house of Domaine Chandon and the historic 1838 Yering Station to family names like De Bortoli, Oakridge and the hatted TarraWarra Estate. Many pair tastings with superb restaurants and views over the vines. It's relaxed, scenic and world-class — and best enjoyed on a wine tour so nobody has to drive.
Gin, chocolate, wildlife & balloons
The Yarra Valley is more than a wine list. Sip your way through Four Pillars Gin in Healesville, graze free tastings at the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and cheese at the Yarra Valley Dairy, then meet platypus, koalas and birds of prey at Healesville Sanctuary. For the ultimate morning, drift over the misty vineyards in a hot-air balloon at dawn, followed by a sparkling breakfast. These are the experiences that set the valley apart.
The Upper Yarra & beyond
Past the vineyards, the valley climbs into cool forest. Around Warburton you'll find the towering Californian redwoods, riverside walks, the new Warburton Bike Park and, in winter, snow on Mount Donna Buang. And the valley is a springboard for day trips — the Dandenong Ranges and Puffing Billy, the scenic Black Spur drive to rebuilt Marysville, and the snow of Lake Mountain. There's far more here than a single day allows.

Very much — it's Victoria's premier wine region and one of the country's best food-and-wine escapes, barely an hour from Melbourne. Spend your time among the cool-climate cellar doors (pinot, chardonnay and sparkling), graze the gin distillery, chocolaterie and cheese makers, meet native animals at Healesville Sanctuary, drift over the vines in a hot-air balloon, and escape into the forests around Warburton. It's a genuine highlight of any Melbourne trip.
The Yarra Valley is about one hour's drive north-east of Melbourne — Healesville is roughly 65 km via the Eastern Freeway, EastLink and the Maroondah Highway through Lilydale. There's no train into the valley itself (the Lilydale line ends at Lilydale), so you'll want a car or, better for wine, a guided wine tour so no one has to drive. See our getting around guide.
Above all, cool-climate wine — it's renowned for elegant pinot noir, chardonnay and sparkling (Domaine Chandon and the historic Yering Station are here), and it was Victoria's first wine region, planted in 1838. They're both wine country, but quite different. The Yarra Valley is cool-climate — its signatures are pinot noir, chardonnay and sparkling — and it's just an hour from Melbourne, with famous autumn vine colour and misty, fireside winters. It also offers non-wine drawcards the Hunter doesn't, like Four Pillars Gin, Healesville Sanctuary and the forests of the Upper Yarra. The Hunter (NSW) is warmer, with semillon and shiraz.
You can enjoy the highlights on a full day trip from Melbourne — a few cellar doors, a long winery lunch and the Chocolaterie or Four Pillars. But a weekend is ideal: it lets you add Healesville Sanctuary, a dawn balloon flight, the TarraWarra museum and time in the forests around Warburton, without rushing between tastings.
