Just 45 minutes to an hour south, the Dandenong Ranges offer cool mountain-ash forests, fern gullies and the pretty hill villages of Olinda and Sassafras. The star attraction is the beloved Puffing Billy steam railway, winding through the forest — a hit with families. Add the Alfred Nicholas Gardens or the SkyHigh lookout, and it's a full, satisfying day out from the valley.
A scenic drive to a rebuilt town
One of Victoria's great drives, the Black Spur winds through towering mountain-ash forest between Healesville and Marysville (30–40 minutes). Marysville, beautifully rebuilt after the 2009 Black Saturday fires, is a peaceful base for Steavenson Falls, forest walks and gardens. It's a story of community resilience as much as a pretty mountain town — and a lovely, restful contrast to a busy day of tastings.
Lake Mountain & Kinglake
For the alpine air, Lake Mountain (beyond Marysville) is set up for cross-country skiing, tobogganing and snow play in winter and gentle walking in summer, about 90 minutes away. Closer to home, the forests and lookouts around Kinglake National Park give sweeping views back over the ranges. It leads to Marysville (about 30–40 minutes from Healesville). The road can be busy with cyclists and motorbikes and gets slippery when wet, so take it gently and enjoy the scenery.
