Find the right Australian shipwreck tour for you
This is the decision-led companion to the full Coastal Legends & Shipwrecks of Australia collection — designed to help you compare regions, plan your trip by interest and season, and decide where to start.
The Coastal Legends collection spans six Australian regions, each with its own iconic wrecks, its own season, its own partner operator, and its own atmosphere. The Sunshine Coast SS Dicky is a 122-year-old beach legend you can visit in an afternoon. The SS Maheno on K'gari requires a 4WD day and rewards photographers with one of the world's most striking rusted hulls. Tangalooma's 15 deliberately scuttled wrecks are an artificial reef teeming with 100+ fish species — for snorkellers. Loch Ard Gorge on Victoria's Shipwreck Coast holds Australia's most famous maritime tragedy. King Island's Cataraqui memorial commemorates Australia's worst civilian disaster — 400 lives lost in 1845. The Batavia at Geraldton tells of Australia's earliest documented European shipwreck and its infamous mutiny.
Each region requires different planning. Different fitness levels. Different seasons. Different group sizes. This hub helps you work out which one — or which combination — is right for you.

Seasonal calendar for Australian coastal heritage
Each region has its own optimal window. The chart below helps you plan single-region day tours or multi-region grand tours by aligning seasons.
Tropical Queensland Peak
Peak turtle nesting season on Queensland coast. Tangalooma snorkelling at best visibility (15-20m). Long daylight hours and dramatic thunderstorms for photography.
✗ Avoid: WA Abrolhos (cyclone), King Island (heat-prone)
Best All-Australia Window
Temperatures moderate everywhere. Tropical humidity drops. Crowds thin. Prime time for multi-region trips — K'gari, Sunshine Coast, GOR, and Batavia all in their optimal windows simultaneously.
✓ Peak: Whale migration begins late May
Whale Migration Peak
Peak humpback whale migration along entire east coast. Dry season in tropical north — K'gari and Tangalooma at their best. Dramatic stormy seascapes on Great Ocean Road.
✗ Avoid: King Island museum (closed Jun-Aug)
Best Grand Tour Window
Wildflower season across Western Australia. Whale calves return south. King Island accessible without winter winds. Sunshine Coast hinterland spectacular. Best overall for the Grand Tour.

Quick answers to the most common planning questions. For region-specific details (museums, ferries, lighthouse hours, dive certification) see the individual region pages.
Which Coastal Legends region should I visit first?
For first-time visitors to Australian shipwreck heritage, the Sunshine Coast (SS Dicky at Caloundra) is the gentlest entry point — accessible by road from Brisbane, family-friendly, and a complete day with no flights or boat transfers. K'gari (SS Maheno) is the most iconic and visually striking for photographers. Tangalooma is the most active (snorkelling, marine life). Great Ocean Road delivers the most famous single story (Loch Ard 1878). King Island is the most moving and reflective. Batavia Coast is for serious maritime history enthusiasts. See the Quick Start section above for jump-links.
When is the best time to visit Australian coastal heritage sites?
March-May (Autumn) is the best all-Australia season — temperatures moderate everywhere, tropical humidity drops, and crowds thin. Winter (June-August) is peak humpback whale migration along the entire east coast and Western Australia. Spring (September-November) is best for multi-region grand tours. Summer (December-February) is peak Queensland turtle nesting season but cyclone-risky for Western Australia. Each region has its own optimal window — see the seasonal calendar above.
Are Coastal Legends tours suitable for families with children?
Most regional tours welcome children aged 6+. Tangalooma Wrecks snorkelling and K'gari SS Maheno beach drive are particularly family-friendly. Sunshine Coast and Great Ocean Road are accessible via maintained paths. King Island and Batavia Coast are best for older children (10+) due to the gravity of the heritage interpretation. Children under 12 receive a 20% discount on most regional itineraries.
Can I combine multiple regions into one trip?
Yes — multi-region packages combining tours across multiple states are available from $1,295 per person and are coordinated end-to-end by Cooee Tours. The Queensland Coast Trio (5 days, $1,295pp), Eastern Seaboard Heritage (10 days, $2,895pp), and Australia Heritage Grand Tour (14-21 days, $6,495pp) are the most popular combinations. Custom multi-region itineraries are also available — email bookings@cooeetours.com.au with your dates and regional interests.
Does Cooee Tours operate the shipwreck tours directly?
No — the Coastal Legends collection is curated by Cooee Tours and delivered by specialist regional partner operators in each region. K'gari Fraser Island Adventures (formerly Drop Bear) on K'gari, See Moreton at Tangalooma, Autopia Tours on the Great Ocean Road, King Island Historical Society on King Island, and WA Museum Geraldton plus charter operators on the Batavia Coast.
