2-Week USA Southwest Road Trip for Aussies — The Vegas Loop

Fourteen days, five states, six national parks, and roughly 2,400 km of open American road. This is the Southwest loop we design most for Australian first-timers — a complete Vegas-to-Vegas circle that covers Zion, Bryce, Moab's Arches and Canyonlands, Monument Valley, Antelope Canyon, the Grand Canyon and Sedona, with enough breathing room that no day feels rushed.

I've designed and booked this Southwest loop itinerary for over 200 Australian clients since 2018, and driven the route myself five times. This reflects what actually works for Aussie travellers — pace, distances, and stops tested by real trips, not theoretical planning. Every recommendation has happy clients behind it.

Six Things to Know Before You Go

A handful of 2026-specific facts that change how you plan, book, and budget for this trip. Read these before reading the day-by-day.

💰
2026 Update: New Non-US Resident Park Fee

From January 2026, the US National Park Service charges USD $100 per person surcharge for non-US residents at 11 of the most popular parks — including Grand Canyon, Zion, and Bryce Canyon. This is on top of standard vehicle entry fees and is NOT waived by the America the Beautiful Annual Pass. Budget roughly AUD $800–$1,200 per couple in park fees across this itinerary.

✈️
Getting to Las Vegas

No direct flights from Australia to Las Vegas. Connect via Los Angeles (Qantas, United) or San Francisco. Allow 3 hours minimum for LAX domestic transfer. Total travel time Sydney → Vegas is typically 17–20 hours.

🇺🇸
ESTA — book first

Australians need an ESTA approval (USD $21) before flying. Valid 2 years, multiple entries. Apply via esta.cbp.dhs.gov at least 72 hours before departure. Don't use third-party sites — they charge 3–5× for the same thing.

🚗
Driving setup

Australian licence is valid; IDP recommended (RACQ/NRMA AUD $45). Drive on the right. Mid-size SUV preferred. Most rentals have automatic transmission. Rental minimum age is 21; under-25 surcharge applies.

📱
Connectivity

Airalo eSIM (USA 10GB from AUD $40) works well. T-Mobile and Verizon coverage strong on interstates, patchy in remote parks. Download offline Google Maps for Utah backroads before departure.

💳
Payment

Cards accepted almost everywhere. Wise or Revolut travel cards save on FX fees. Tipping is standard: 18–20% restaurants, USD $2–3 per bag at hotels, USD $2–5 for tours. Budget AUD $400–$600 per couple in tips.

🛡️
Insurance

$10M+ medical cover minimum — US hospital costs are catastrophic without it. Comprehensive policy with hiking cover (Angel's Landing) and rental car excess. Cover-More or Allianz work well. See our insurance guide.

Pick Your Season

Shoulder seasons — spring and autumn — are the sweet spots for the Southwest. Summer is hot but feasible; winter is dramatic but some access is limited.

Winter
Dec–Mar
★★☆☆

Dramatic snow-dusted red rock, quiet parks, cold. Some high-elevation closures. Bryce can be icy.

Spring
Apr–May
★★★★

Optimal. Wildflowers, 18–25°C, smaller crowds. Aussie school autumn break timing.

Summer
Jun–Aug
★★☆☆

Peak crowds, 38–45°C at lower parks. Higher parks like Bryce stay cooler. Aussie school hols — pricey.

Autumn
Sep–Oct
★★★★

Optimal. Warm days, cool nights, golden cottonwoods in Zion. Aussie spring break timing.

💡 Our pick: Mid-September through mid-October. Daytime temperatures 22–28°C (similar to Brisbane spring), crisp mornings, reduced crowds, and incredible autumn colours in Zion's cottonwoods. Avoid late July through August unless you specifically want heat and don't mind crowds — Aussie winter school holidays (late June) overlap with the worst of it.

14 Days — Day by Day

The full Vegas loop with daily drives, suggested accommodation, key experiences, and time-of-day tips. Every day is deliberate — not overstuffed, not lazy. Designed for Aussie travellers balancing adventure with recovery from the long flight.

Day 1–2

Arrive Las Vegas — Jet Lag Recovery & Strip Orientation

📍 LAS · No driving

Day 1: Land at Harry Reid International (LAS) after the long Pacific crossing. Check in to your Strip-adjacent hotel, resist the urge to do too much. Pool, shower, casual dinner, sleep. Day 2: Recovery day that's still fun. Morning visit to the Neon Museum, late afternoon walk the Strip (Bellagio fountains, Venetian canals, Fremont Street East). Dinner — consider reservations at Bouchon, Mon Ami Gabi, or something casual like Secret Pizza at The Cosmopolitan.

🏨 Stay
Mid-range: The Cosmopolitan, Venetian, or Paris. Budget: Flamingo or Linq. Avoid off-Strip for first-time arrivals.
🍽️ Eat
Bouchon (French bistro), Mon Ami Gabi (outdoor Strip views), In-N-Out for a first-night burger.
💰 Day cost
AUD $400–$700 per couple including accommodation, food, drinks.
Experiences
  • Bellagio fountains (evening, free)
  • Neon Museum ($28 USD pp daytime)
  • High Roller observation wheel
  • Fremont Street light show
  • Early morning Strip walk (less crowded)
  • Collect rental car afternoon Day 2
💡 Arrival-day tip: Collect the rental car on Day 2 afternoon, not Day 1 — you don't want to drive jet-lagged. Most airport rental desks stay open late. Most major agencies (Hertz, Avis, Alamo, Enterprise) run shuttles from LAS to their off-airport lots.
Day 3–4

Zion National Park — The Narrows & Angel's Landing

🚗 260 km · 2h 45min drive

Day 3: Drive Vegas → Springdale via I-15 and SR-9. Stock up on groceries at Harmons in St. George en route. Afternoon arrival; ride the free Zion shuttle to Temple of Sinawava and walk the flat Riverside Walk as an introduction. Sunset at Canyon Junction Bridge — the iconic "Watchman" photo. Day 4: The Narrows — hire waterproof socks and walking stick from Zion Outfitter, then wade up the Virgin River through the slot canyon walls (go 2–3 hours in, allow same coming back). Afternoon: Angel's Landing (permit required, seasonal lottery) OR Observation Point via East Mesa Trail as the safer alternative with arguably better views.

🏨 Stay
Splurge: Zion Lodge (inside park). Mid: Desert Pearl Inn, Cable Mountain Lodge (Springdale).
🍽️ Eat
Bit & Spur (Mexican), King's Landing Bistro (fine dining), Oscar's Cafe (casual). All Springdale.
💰 Day cost
AUD $500–$800 per couple including Zion entry (USD $35 vehicle + USD $200 non-resident surcharge).
Experiences
  • The Narrows river hike
  • Angel's Landing (permit required)
  • Observation Point (alternative)
  • Canyon Overlook Trail (1hr)
  • Emerald Pools chain
  • Sunset at Canyon Junction Bridge
💡 Shuttle reality: Private vehicles are banned on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive from March to late November — you must use the free shuttle (6:00am first, every 7–15 mins). Plan around shuttle times; allow 60–90 mins total for trailhead transport on a busy day.
Day 5

Bryce Canyon — Dawn Hoodoos & High Plateau

🚗 140 km · 2h drive

Drive Springdale → Bryce via the spectacular SR-9 / SR-89 / SR-12 route. Stop at Mt Carmel Highway tunnel and the Checkerboard Mesa viewpoint. Arrive Bryce by noon; amphitheatre viewpoints first — Sunset Point, Inspiration Point, Bryce Point, Sunrise Point (yes, Sunrise Point is best at sunrise — set alarm for Day 6 morning). Afternoon: hike the Navajo Loop + Queens Garden combo (5km, 2 hours, moderate) right down among the hoodoos. Evening: Bryce is a designated International Dark Sky Park — stargazing is genuinely world-class. Pack warm layers; the rim sits at 2,500m and nights are cold even in summer.

🏨 Stay
Splurge: The Lodge at Bryce (inside park). Mid: Bryce Canyon Pines, Best Western Plus.
🍽️ Eat
I.D.K. Barbecue (local favourite), The Lodge Restaurant (park dining), Bryce Canyon Pines.
💰 Day cost
AUD $500–$750 per couple including Bryce entry (USD $35 vehicle + USD $200 non-resident surcharge).
Experiences
  • Navajo Loop + Queens Garden combo
  • Sunrise Point at dawn (Day 6)
  • Bryce Amphitheatre viewpoints
  • Rim Trail walks
  • Night-sky Milky Way photography
  • Red Canyon drive-through
💡 Altitude note: Bryce sits at 2,500m — much higher than Zion (1,200m). You may notice mild breathlessness on trails. Hydrate, avoid big alcohol night. Temperatures drop sharply after sunset even in summer — pack a fleece or puffer jacket.
Day 6–7

Moab — Arches, Canyonlands & Dead Horse Point

🚗 420 km · 4h 15min drive (Day 6)

Day 6: Sunrise Point at Bryce (5:45am alarm — worth it), breakfast, then the long but stunning drive east via SR-12 (Scenic Byway 12 — one of USA's great drives) → SR-24 → I-70 to Moab. Arrive late afternoon; settle in. Day 7: Split your day. Morning: Arches National Park — drive the park road, short walk to Delicate Arch (4.8km return, 90 min), Balanced Rock, Double Arch, Landscape Arch. Afternoon: Canyonlands Island in the Sky — Grand View Point Overlook, Mesa Arch (set alarm for Day 8 pre-dawn if photographing). Sunset: Dead Horse Point State Park for the most photographed overlook in Utah.

🏨 Stay
Splurge: Moab Springs Ranch, Sorrel River Ranch. Mid: Aarchway Inn, Gonzo Inn.
🍽️ Eat
Desert Bistro (upscale), Moab Diner (breakfast classic), Miguel's Baja Grill (Mexican), Moab Brewery.
💰 Day cost
AUD $650–$950 per couple including Arches entry (USD $30 vehicle, no surcharge). Canyonlands entry included in America the Beautiful.
Experiences
  • Delicate Arch hike at sunset
  • Mesa Arch at dawn (iconic shot)
  • Dead Horse Point sunset
  • Scenic Byway 12 drive
  • Colorado River riverside meal
  • Optional: Fisher Towers 4WD detour
💡 Arches timed-entry update: Timed-entry reservations were removed in February 2026 — the park is now open 24/7 without reservation. But it's still very busy March–October. Arrive before 8am or after 3pm for parking at Delicate Arch trailhead. Sunset Delicate Arch is worth the crowd — arrive 90 min before sunset to secure a spot on the rim.
Day 8

Monument Valley — Navajo Nation Icons

🚗 250 km · 2h 45min drive

Drive Moab → Monument Valley via US-191 South through Bluff. Stop at Goosenecks State Park (the San Juan River's tight meanders) and the Valley of the Gods scenic detour if time allows. Arrive Monument Valley by 3pm. Afternoon: the famous Forrest Gump Point on US-163 north of the valley (the John Ford shot), then enter Monument Valley Tribal Park — the 27 km self-drive Valley Drive loop. Sunset: John Ford Point overlook, or — much better — sunset from The View Hotel's balcony/terrace if you've booked a room there. Evening: Navajo-guided sunset tour to the restricted back-country (Mystery Valley or Teardrop Arch, USD $85 pp — genuinely worth it, you see what the self-drive route misses).

🏨 Stay
Splurge: The View Hotel (rooms face the monuments — book 4+ months ahead). Alt: Goulding's Lodge.
🍽️ Eat
The View Restaurant (Navajo cuisine — try the Navajo taco). Options limited; plan around hotel dining.
💰 Day cost
AUD $600–$950 per couple including tribal park entry (USD $8 pp, separate from NPS — no surcharge).
Experiences
  • Forrest Gump Point photo stop
  • John Ford Point overlook
  • Valley Drive self-drive loop
  • Navajo-guided sunset tour
  • The View Hotel balcony sunrise
  • Goosenecks State Park detour
💡 Tribal park specifics: Monument Valley is Navajo Nation land, not US National Park — different rules, different fees, no NPS surcharge applies. Respect restrictions strictly: some areas require Navajo guides, drones are banned, photography of residents requires permission. The sunrise from The View Hotel is the shot of the trip.
Day 9–10

Page — Antelope Canyon & Horseshoe Bend

🚗 180 km · 2h drive (Day 9)

Day 9: Sunrise at The View Hotel, drive to Page via US-163 / US-98. Afternoon: Horseshoe Bend (800m walk from car park, USD $10 per vehicle, go for sunset — arrive 90 mins early). Evening in Page — casual dinner, early night. Day 10: The headline — Antelope Canyon. Two options: Upper (easier walk, light beams at midday, iconic) or Lower (ladders and narrow passages, less crowded, arguably more beautiful). Both require Navajo-guided tours — no self-guided access. Afternoon: Lake Powell's Glen Canyon — Wahweap Marina kayak, boat tour to Rainbow Bridge, or Alstrom Point 4WD scenic drive.

🏨 Stay
Mid: Hyatt Place Page/Lake Powell, Courtyard by Marriott Page, La Quinta.
🍽️ Eat
El Tapatio (Mexican), Big John's Texas BBQ, State 48 Tavern. Limited upscale options; standard tourist fare.
💰 Day cost
AUD $650–$900 per couple. Antelope Canyon tour USD $80–$120 pp, Horseshoe Bend USD $10, Lake Powell activities extra.
Experiences
  • Antelope Canyon Upper or Lower
  • Horseshoe Bend sunset
  • Lake Powell boat or kayak
  • Alstrom Point 4WD sunset
  • Glen Canyon Dam tour
  • Toadstools geological hike
💡 The #1 booking priority: Book Antelope Canyon 2–3 months ahead in peak season. It sells out. Go through kenstours.com, antelopelowercanyon.com, or Taadidiin Tours. Upper for classic light beams (best 10am–1pm, April–October). Lower for more dramatic shapes and fewer people. Photography tours (longer, smaller groups) are worth it for serious photographers; skip otherwise.
Day 11–12

Grand Canyon South Rim — The Big One

🚗 220 km · 2h 30min drive

Day 11: Drive Page → Grand Canyon South Rim via US-89 / US-64 through the Navajo Nation. Enter the park at the East Entrance — the scenic route past Desert View Watchtower, Lipan Point, and Grandview Point. Check into accommodation at Grand Canyon Village, then rim walk from Mather Point → Yavapai Point. Sunset: Hopi Point (take the Hermits Rest Road shuttle — private vehicles banned March–November). Day 12: Morning: short section of the Bright Angel Trail (to Mile-and-a-Half Resthouse and back — 3 hours, real canyon immersion without a full rim-to-river commitment). Afternoon: Yavapai Geology Museum, Kolb Studio, Rim Trail walk sections. Evening: Dinner at El Tovar Dining Room (book 6 months ahead — it's inside the historic El Tovar Hotel).

🏨 Stay
Splurge: El Tovar (book 12 months ahead). Mid: Bright Angel Lodge, Maswik Lodge, Yavapai Lodge (all in-park).
🍽️ Eat
El Tovar Dining Room (historic, reserve ahead), Bright Angel Fountain, Arizona Room (Bright Angel Lodge).
💰 Day cost
AUD $800–$1,200 per couple including Grand Canyon entry (USD $35 vehicle + USD $200 non-resident surcharge — this is the big one).
Experiences
  • Mather Point / Yavapai Point rim walk
  • Hopi Point sunset via shuttle
  • Bright Angel Trail partial descent
  • Desert View Watchtower
  • El Tovar Dining Room dinner
  • Stargazing from South Rim
💡 Don't do rim-to-river and back in one day. Every year people try it; every year rangers rescue some. It's 24km with 1,400m elevation change in summer heat that exceeds 40°C in the canyon. Go 3–5km down and back up instead — you get genuine below-the-rim experience without the rescue risk. Serious trekkers need an overnight permit for Phantom Ranch (book 15 months ahead).
Day 13–14

Sedona Red Rocks & Return to Las Vegas

🚗 180 km (Day 13) · 450 km (Day 14)

Day 13: Drive Grand Canyon → Sedona via Williams and Flagstaff (optional Route 66 stretch through Seligman for the kitsch). Arrive Sedona early afternoon. Day 13 afternoon/sunset: Cathedral Rock at sunset (iconic, 2km return, moderate scramble at the top), or Airport Mesa for panoramic rim views. Dinner at Mariposa Latin Inspired Grill. Day 14: Morning — one last hike. Options: Devil's Bridge (moderate, 6km return), Bell Rock climb (short, panoramic), or Boynton Canyon (gentle, a vortex site). Drive Sedona → Las Vegas (450km, 4h 30min) via I-17 North → I-40 West → US-93 North. Arrive Vegas late afternoon, return rental, last-night dinner (consider Tao or something celebratory), evening flight home — or one more night if you've bookended.

🏨 Stay
Splurge: L'Auberge de Sedona, Enchantment Resort. Mid: Amara Resort, Arabella Hotel Sedona.
🍽️ Eat
Mariposa (upscale Latin), Elote Cafe (famous — queue 2 hours), Coffee Pot Restaurant (classic breakfast, 101 omelette flavours).
💰 Day cost
AUD $500–$900 per couple including Sedona Red Rock pass (USD $5/day) and Vegas return transfers.
Experiences
  • Cathedral Rock sunset hike
  • Airport Mesa sunset alternative
  • Devil's Bridge morning hike
  • Vortex sites (if you're into that)
  • Route 66 Seligman photo stop
  • Final Vegas celebration dinner
💡 Return timing: If flight back to Australia is evening Day 14, leave Sedona by 9am — the drive is 4h 30min plus rental return and airport check-in time. If your flight is late evening, add 90 min buffer for traffic on I-15 approaching Vegas. Alternatively, add a 15th night in Vegas if you want to avoid the same-day rush.

Luxury tier gets you into El Tovar and Zion Lodge (inside the parks), premium restaurants, and Navajo photography tours — worth it if budget allows and you want minimal hassle.

Shorter, Longer, or Luxury Variants

Not every traveller has 14 days or the same budget. Here are the three most common adaptations we design for Australian clients.

⏱️ Shorter
10-Day Highlights Version
Budget: AUD $14,000–$18,000 per couple

Cut Moab (Arches + Canyonlands) and reduce Sedona to one night. Keeps Vegas → Zion → Bryce → Page (Antelope) → Grand Canyon → Sedona. Still covers the icons but loses Utah's Mighty 5 experience. Works for travellers with tighter leave.

➕ Longer
21-Day Extended Version
Budget: AUD $28,000–$36,000 per couple

Add 4 days for Capitol Reef + Grand Staircase-Escalante between Bryce and Moab, 2 days for Valley of Fire / Death Valley near Vegas, plus an extra day at Grand Canyon for helicopter tour. Unlocks Utah's full Mighty 5 and makes everything more relaxed.

✨ Luxury
14-Day Luxury Upgrade
Budget: AUD $35,000–$45,000 per couple

Same 14 days, same loop, but: El Tovar and Zion Lodge inside-park upgrades, premium SUV (Cadillac Escalade or equivalent), helicopter tour at Grand Canyon (USD $350 pp), Navajo photography tour Monument Valley, private guides for Antelope Canyon. Minimal hassle, maximum experience.

🚗 Other common adaptations: Add California coast (fly Vegas → LA, add Pacific Coast Highway to San Francisco — extends to 21 days). Start/finish Los Angeles instead (adds 2 LAX transit days but saves Vegas flight, adds Joshua Tree). Winter version (December–February) — skip the Narrows (cold water), add Death Valley, expect snow closures at Bryce high points. Contact us to build exactly what you want.

The Booking Checklist — What to Lock in First

Not everything books the same way. This is the priority order — do the top items first, rest follow.

🗓️ Priority Booking Order — 14-Day Southwest Loop

Follow this order. The first three items have longest lead times; miss them and the trip becomes much harder to book well.

01
Flights to Las Vegas — book 4–6 months ahead for best fares. Via LAX or SFO. Consider premium economy on the 15-hour Pacific leg.
02
In-park lodges — El Tovar (Grand Canyon), Zion Lodge, Bryce Lodge. Book 12 months ahead via official concessioners, not third-party.
03
Antelope Canyon tour — 2–3 months ahead for peak, 4+ months for photography tours. Navajo operators only.
04
The View Hotel Monument Valley — 4–6 months ahead for valley-view rooms (the only reason to stay there).
05
SUV rental — 2–3 months ahead. Compare Hertz, Alamo, Enterprise via Expedia or Kayak. Confirm transmission (automatic).
06
ESTA — anytime once you have dates. USD $21 pp, valid 2 years. Apply via official esta.cbp.dhs.gov.
07
Springdale, Moab, Page hotels — 3–4 months ahead for peak, flexibility OK for shoulder season.
08
Travel insurance — at time of flight booking, not before departure. AUD $10M+ USA medical essential.
09
Restaurant reservations — El Tovar Dining Room 6 months ahead. Elote Cafe Sedona accepts walk-in (queue 1–2 hours).
10
Angel's Landing permit (if attempting) — seasonal lottery, apply 4 months before intended month.
11
America the Beautiful Pass — USD $80, covers all NPS sites for 12 months. Doesn't waive 2026 non-resident surcharge. Buy at first park.
12
Sedona accommodation — 2–3 months ahead. L'Auberge and Enchantment are 4+ months.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Southwest USA road trip questions Australian travellers ask us most often before booking.

How much does a 2-week USA Southwest road trip cost for Australians?
Mid-range couple from Australia: AUD $15,000–$22,000 total for two weeks. Includes return flights Sydney/Melbourne to Las Vegas (approximately AUD $3,500–$5,500 per couple), 14 nights mid-range accommodation (AUD $5,000–$7,500), SUV rental with insurance (AUD $2,500–$3,500), fuel (AUD $1,200), 2026 national park fees including new non-US resident surcharges (AUD $800–$1,200), food (AUD $3,500–$5,000), and activities. Budget version: AUD $10,500–$13,000. Luxury: AUD $28,000–$38,000.
What's the best time of year to do a Southwest USA road trip?
April–May and September–October are the sweet spots — mild temperatures, smaller crowds, all parks accessible. Summer (June–August) is very hot (40°C+ at lower elevations) and crowded, though the higher parks like Bryce stay cooler. Winter (November–March) offers dramatic snow-dusted red rock but Zion's shuttle may not run, Bryce can be icy, and some high-elevation roads close. Aussie school holidays in July–August work but expect peak prices and heat.
Can Australians drive in the USA with an Australian licence?
Yes — Australian driver's licences are valid in all USA states for tourism, provided they are current and in English. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended but not legally required. Obtain an IDP from RACQ/NRMA/RACV for AUD $45 before departure — some rental companies request it, and it helps with police interactions. Minimum rental age is typically 21 (surcharge under 25). Drive on the right side of the road.
Is the 2026 US National Park non-US resident surcharge real?
Yes. From January 2026, the US National Park Service introduced a USD $100 per person surcharge for non-US residents at eleven of the most popular parks, including Grand Canyon, Zion, Yosemite, and several others in our itinerary. This is on top of standard vehicle entry fees. Budget approximately AUD $800–$1,200 per couple in park fees across this itinerary. The America the Beautiful Annual Pass (standard USD $80) no longer waives this surcharge for non-residents.
Should I book accommodation in advance or be flexible?
Book in advance for this itinerary — at least 3–4 months ahead for shoulder season (Apr/May/Sep/Oct), 6+ months for summer or any dates around US holidays. In-park lodges (El Tovar Grand Canyon, Zion Lodge) sell out 12 months ahead. Springdale (Zion gateway), Moab, and Page get tight in peak season. Booking.com, Expedia, and direct hotel sites all work — we recommend direct for in-park lodges and Booking.com for Springdale/Moab for easier cancellation.
Do I need a 4WD vehicle?
No — a standard mid-size SUV (Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, Jeep Compass) handles this entire itinerary comfortably. All main roads to national parks are sealed. You only need 4WD/AWD if extending to specific off-road locations (White Pocket, Valley of the Gods, deep Monument Valley tours). Book SUV rather than sedan for luggage space and higher seating position on scenic drives. Budget AUD $180–$280 per day for mid-size SUV including insurance.
How much driving is involved day-to-day?
Daily driving averages 2–4 hours — designed to be enjoyable rather than gruelling. Longest single drive is 4.5 hours (Monument Valley to Grand Canyon area, or Sedona back to Vegas). Several shorter days under 2 hours allow for proper exploration. Total trip mileage approximately 2,400 km (1,500 miles). That's similar to driving Brisbane to Melbourne and back — spread across 14 days, it's manageable for one or two drivers with normal energy.
What's the single most important thing to book in advance?
Antelope Canyon tours — they book out 2–3 months ahead in peak season. Must be taken with a Navajo guide. Book via kenstours.com or antelopelowercanyon.com. Second priority: in-park lodges (El Tovar at Grand Canyon, Zion Lodge) 6–12 months ahead. Third: Angel's Landing permit if attempting (seasonal lottery). Rental car 2–3 months ahead for best rates. Everything else has more flexibility.
Can I do this trip with kids?
Yes — it's one of our top USA family itineraries for kids 8+. The hiking is manageable with frequent breaks, every stop has short easy trails (Mesa Arch, Riverside Walk at Zion, Sunrise Point at Bryce). Swap Angel's Landing for Observation Point (safer). Skip Cathedral Rock scramble for Bell Rock. Sedona and Vegas have kid-friendly dining everywhere. Add a day for a helicopter tour at the Grand Canyon — kids love it. Under 8 is harder; long drive days get tedious.
Is it safe? Any concerns specific to this region?
Very safe for Aussies with standard USA travel precautions. Crime in the tourist areas of Vegas, Moab, Sedona is minimal. Real safety concerns are natural: heat stroke (hydrate constantly — 3L+ per day in summer), flash floods in slot canyons (never enter Antelope Canyon or hike narrows when rain is forecast anywhere upstream), and rattlesnakes (watch where you step on trails). Always tell someone your day hike plan. Cell coverage is patchy in remote areas. See our Americas Safety Guide.

This itinerary traverses the ancestral and current lands of the Navajo Nation, Havasupai, Hualapai, Hopi, Southern Paiute, Ute Mountain Ute, Pueblo peoples, and many other First Nations. Monument Valley and Antelope Canyon are part of Navajo Nation; access is privileged and revenue from tribal park fees and guide tours directly supports those communities. Travel respectfully.
