❓ FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
The Southwest USA road trip questions Australian travellers ask us most often before booking.
How much does a 2-week USA Southwest road trip cost for Australians?
Mid-range couple from Australia: AUD $15,000–$22,000 total for two weeks. Includes return flights Sydney/Melbourne to Las Vegas (approximately AUD $3,500–$5,500 per couple), 14 nights mid-range accommodation (AUD $5,000–$7,500), SUV rental with insurance (AUD $2,500–$3,500), fuel (AUD $1,200), 2026 national park fees including new non-US resident surcharges (AUD $800–$1,200), food (AUD $3,500–$5,000), and activities. Budget version: AUD $10,500–$13,000. Luxury: AUD $28,000–$38,000.
What's the best time of year to do a Southwest USA road trip?
April–May and September–October are the sweet spots — mild temperatures, smaller crowds, all parks accessible. Summer (June–August) is very hot (40°C+ at lower elevations) and crowded, though the higher parks like Bryce stay cooler. Winter (November–March) offers dramatic snow-dusted red rock but Zion's shuttle may not run, Bryce can be icy, and some high-elevation roads close. Aussie school holidays in July–August work but expect peak prices and heat.
Can Australians drive in the USA with an Australian licence?
Yes — Australian driver's licences are valid in all USA states for tourism, provided they are current and in English. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended but not legally required. Obtain an IDP from RACQ/NRMA/RACV for AUD $45 before departure — some rental companies request it, and it helps with police interactions. Minimum rental age is typically 21 (surcharge under 25). Drive on the right side of the road.
Is the 2026 US National Park non-US resident surcharge real?
Yes. From January 2026, the US National Park Service introduced a USD $100 per person surcharge for non-US residents at eleven of the most popular parks, including Grand Canyon, Zion, Yosemite, and several others in our itinerary. This is on top of standard vehicle entry fees. Budget approximately AUD $800–$1,200 per couple in park fees across this itinerary. The America the Beautiful Annual Pass (standard USD $80) no longer waives this surcharge for non-residents.
Should I book accommodation in advance or be flexible?
Book in advance for this itinerary — at least 3–4 months ahead for shoulder season (Apr/May/Sep/Oct), 6+ months for summer or any dates around US holidays. In-park lodges (El Tovar Grand Canyon, Zion Lodge) sell out 12 months ahead. Springdale (Zion gateway), Moab, and Page get tight in peak season. Booking.com, Expedia, and direct hotel sites all work — we recommend direct for in-park lodges and Booking.com for Springdale/Moab for easier cancellation.
Do I need a 4WD vehicle?
No — a standard mid-size SUV (Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, Jeep Compass) handles this entire itinerary comfortably. All main roads to national parks are sealed. You only need 4WD/AWD if extending to specific off-road locations (White Pocket, Valley of the Gods, deep Monument Valley tours). Book SUV rather than sedan for luggage space and higher seating position on scenic drives. Budget AUD $180–$280 per day for mid-size SUV including insurance.
How much driving is involved day-to-day?
Daily driving averages 2–4 hours — designed to be enjoyable rather than gruelling. Longest single drive is 4.5 hours (Monument Valley to Grand Canyon area, or Sedona back to Vegas). Several shorter days under 2 hours allow for proper exploration. Total trip mileage approximately 2,400 km (1,500 miles). That's similar to driving Brisbane to Melbourne and back — spread across 14 days, it's manageable for one or two drivers with normal energy.
What's the single most important thing to book in advance?
Antelope Canyon tours — they book out 2–3 months ahead in peak season. Must be taken with a Navajo guide. Book via kenstours.com or antelopelowercanyon.com. Second priority: in-park lodges (El Tovar at Grand Canyon, Zion Lodge) 6–12 months ahead. Third: Angel's Landing permit if attempting (seasonal lottery). Rental car 2–3 months ahead for best rates. Everything else has more flexibility.
Can I do this trip with kids?
Yes — it's one of our top USA family itineraries for kids 8+. The hiking is manageable with frequent breaks, every stop has short easy trails (Mesa Arch, Riverside Walk at Zion, Sunrise Point at Bryce). Swap Angel's Landing for Observation Point (safer). Skip Cathedral Rock scramble for Bell Rock. Sedona and Vegas have kid-friendly dining everywhere. Add a day for a helicopter tour at the Grand Canyon — kids love it. Under 8 is harder; long drive days get tedious.
Is it safe? Any concerns specific to this region?
Very safe for Aussies with
standard USA travel precautions. Crime in the tourist areas of Vegas, Moab, Sedona is minimal. Real safety concerns are natural: heat stroke (hydrate constantly — 3L+ per day in summer), flash floods in slot canyons (never enter Antelope Canyon or hike narrows when rain is forecast anywhere upstream), and rattlesnakes (watch where you step on trails). Always tell someone your day hike plan. Cell coverage is patchy in remote areas. See our
