Welcome to the Asia Journal

A short flight, an enormous continent.

Asia is the long-haul region most Australian travellers know best - and the one with the steepest learning curve between the brochure and the trip. Tokyo is not Kyoto. Bangkok is not Chiang Mai. Bali is not Lombok. Hanoi is not Hoi An. The difference between an excellent two-week itinerary and a frustrating one is almost always in the sequencing - the order you visit places, the month you go, and what you choose not to do.

Direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth put Asia in genuine long-weekend reach. Visa-free entry covers a lot of the popular destinations for Australian passport holders. AUD goes a long way once you're on the ground. The trip planning is where most people lose hours; this is where we share what we've learned routing Cooee travellers through Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Bali, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal and beyond.

About this Journal

Brisbane-based, locally-led.

Cooee Tours is a Brisbane ATAS-accredited tour operator. Our Asia itineraries are curated from Australia and delivered by long-standing local ground operators in each country - the people who know which ryokan still has the original onsen, which Vietnam sleeper bus to avoid, and which Bali driver is genuinely the best in Ubud.

Booking through an Australian agency gives you ATAS consumer protection, AUD-priced quotes without surprise FX charges, and a Brisbane phone number to call if anything shifts mid-trip. Read more about how we work, or get in touch for a custom Asia itinerary.

Asia questions.

Common things Australian travellers ask before booking their next Asia trip.

Which Asian countries are visa-free for Australian passport holders?
Visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry for Australians is available in Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia (Bali), the Philippines and Hong Kong - typically for 30 to 90 days depending on country. India, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Cambodia require eVisas which can be applied for online before travel. China's rules change frequently - always check current requirements before booking. See our country-by-country visa guide for fees in AUD and processing times.
When is the best time to visit South-East Asia?
The reliable dry-season window for most of South-East Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Bali) runs November to early April. Northern Vietnam can be cool and misty December-February. The monsoon shoulder months (May, October) often have shorter showers and excellent prices. Japan's cherry blossom peaks late March to early April, autumn colour mid-October to late November. Our region-by-region timing guide breaks this down monthly.
How long should an Asia trip from Australia be?
Asia is the closest major travel region to Australia, with direct flights from 7 to 11 hours depending on hub. That makes short trips genuinely feasible - 7-10 days is enough for a single country (Bali, Singapore stopover, Tokyo + Kyoto). Two-week trips combining 2-3 countries are the sweet spot. Multi-country South-East Asia loops typically need 18-28 days to do them properly.
Is the food safe to eat in Asia?
For Australian travellers the practical answer is yes - tens of thousands visit each year without issue. Stick to busy local stalls (high turnover = fresh food), drink bottled or filtered water, watch ice and salads in lower-hygiene areas, and start with cooked food in the first 48 hours while your gut adjusts. Travel insurance with adequate medical cover is non-negotiable. See our Asia food-safety section in the regional travel-tips guide. Always check Smartraveller.gov.au for current health advisories.
Are direct flights to Asia available from Australia?
Yes, and that's Asia's biggest advantage over other long-haul regions. Direct flights operate from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth to Tokyo, Singapore, Bangkok, Bali (Denpasar), Manila, Ho Chi Minh City, Seoul, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and several Indian cities. Perth has the shortest hops. Flight times typically run 6-10 hours - much more accessible than Europe, Africa or the Americas.
Does Cooee Tours operate its own Asia tours?
Yes. As an ATAS-accredited Australian tour operator we curate and sell Asia itineraries directly through trusted local ground operators in each country. You get AUD pricing, Australian consumer protection, and a Brisbane contact in your timezone if travel plans need adjusting. Get in touch for a custom quote on Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, India or any combination.
