Four Unmissable French Regions

From the City of Light to sun-drenched Mediterranean coastlines — choose the France that speaks to you, or combine two or three regions into the trip of a lifetime.

Paris at sunset — Eiffel Tower illuminated over the Seine River City of Light

Paris

Art · Romance · Gastronomy · History

The Eiffel Tower's nightly sparkle, the Louvre's 35,000 artworks, the restored Notre Dame Cathedral, Montmartre's cobblestoned lanes, a Seine cruise at dusk — Paris is inexhaustible. France's capital is the world's most visited city for a reason, and one visit is never enough. Base yourself in the 1st–6th arrondissements and walk everywhere. Day-trip to the Palace of Versailles, Giverny (Monet's garden), and Chartres cathedral.

Nice and the Promenade des Anglais on the French Riviera, Côte d'Azur Côte d'Azur

French Riviera

Beaches · Glamour · Mediterranean Coast · Hilltop Villages

Three hundred days of sunshine along 115 km of Mediterranean coastline — the Côte d'Azur is synonymous with luxury, warmth, and unparalleled scenery. Walk the UNESCO-listed Promenade des Anglais in Nice, visit the Monte Carlo Casino, drive the spectacular Grande Corniche road above Monaco, and wander the medieval perched village of Eze. The best base for exploring is Nice, with Monaco just 20 minutes by train.

Provence

Lavender · Wine · Medieval Villages · Roman Ruins

Lavender horizons, sun-warmed ochre villages, Roman amphitheatres, and châteaux filled with Châteauneuf-du-Pape — Provence slows time to its own golden rhythm. The Luberon's hilltop villages (Gordes, Roussillon, Les Baux) are among France's most beautiful. Avignon's medieval Palais des Papes dominates the Rhône, while the Calanques near Cassis offer the Mediterranean at its most dramatic. Pack linen, bring a corkscrew.

Château de Chambord — France's greatest Renaissance castle reflected in its moat, Loire Valley Garden of France

Loire Valley

Châteaux · Cycling · Wine · Leonardo da Vinci

A UNESCO World Heritage landscape of 300+ fairy-tale châteaux strung along the longest river in France — the Loire Valley is where French Renaissance royalty built their most extravagant homes. Chambord's double-helix staircase, Chenonceau spanning the River Cher, and the extraordinary gardens at Villandry. Leonardo da Vinci spent his final years at Amboise. The Loire à Vélo cycling route, world-class Sancerre wine, and hot air balloon flights complete the picture. Just 1 hour from Paris by TGV.

A beautifully set table at a classic French restaurant with wine, bread and candles — French dining culture

Why France Is the World's Most Visited Country

No country on earth offers the same combination of world-class art, extraordinary regional cuisine, wine of every style and price point, ancient history in every stone, and sheer physical beauty. From the snow-capped peaks of the French Alps to the Côte d'Azur's turquoise Mediterranean coves, France's geography is as dramatically varied as its culture.

For Australian travellers, France rewards the extra flying hours many times over. Paris remains the natural gateway — a city that genuinely lives up to its mythology — but the real discovery is usually beyond it: the lavender fields of the Luberon at dawn, a glass of chilled Sancerre on a Loire riverbank, or watching the Eiffel Tower's lights ignite over Monaco from a Grande Corniche lookout.

Planning Tip: The perfect two-week France itinerary for Australians typically combines 3 nights in Paris with 4 nights in Provence or the Loire Valley, ending with 4–5 nights on the French Riviera — finishing close to Nice airport for the return journey. All legs are connected by TGV in under 3 hours.
  • Best months — April–June & September–October for ideal weather and manageable crowds
  • Getting around — TGV high-speed train connects all major cities; hire a car for the countryside
  • Language — Basic French phrases earn enormous goodwill; English is widely spoken in cities
  • Cuisine — Each region has its own distinct dishes; always eat the local speciality
  • Budget — France suits every budget from market lunch to Michelin dinner, often on the same day

Best Things to Do in France

Our editors' selection of the finest experiences across all four regions — ranked by impact and memorability.

Paris

Eiffel Tower at Night

Go at dusk and stay for the first hour's twinkling light show — 20,000 bulbs igniting for five magical minutes. Book the summit for the best Paris panorama of your life.

French Riviera

Drive the Grande Corniche

Arguably the most spectacular coastal drive in Europe — from Nice to Menton at 500 metres above sea level, with Monaco laid out like a jewel far below.

Provence

Lavender at Valensole at Dawn

Arriving at the Plateau de Valensole before sunrise in peak July bloom — with the light turning from violet to gold across a sea of lavender — is one of France's great travel photographs.

Loire Valley

Hot Air Balloon over Chambord

Floating silently above the Loire Valley at dawn — Chambord's extraordinary roofline below, vineyards and river meadows stretching to the horizon — is the most extraordinary perspective France offers.

Paris

Musée d'Orsay at Opening

Arrive at 9:30 am Thursday for the quietest Orsay experience — Monet's enormous water lily canvases, Van Gogh's self-portraits, and Degas's dancers, almost entirely to yourself.

French Riviera

Boat Cruise from Nice to Eze

A private or small-group boat from Nice's Vieux Port, hugging the coastline past Villefranche, Cap Ferrat, and Monaco before mooring below the perched village of Eze for lunch.

Provence

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Wine Tour

A morning visiting two estate cellars in the legendary AOC, tasting vintages from vines grown in ancient pebble-rich soil — followed by a long lunch at a restaurant with vineyards for a view.

Loire Valley

Private Morning at Chenonceau

Before the tour buses arrive, the Ladies' Castle spanning the River Cher belongs only to you — reflections of the bridge-château shimmering in the still morning water below.

Paris

Seine Dinner Cruise

Gliding past the illuminated Eiffel Tower, Musée d'Orsay, and Notre Dame over a three-course French dinner is one of Paris's most reliably romantic evenings. Book the upper deck for an open-air table.

Provence

Roman Theatre Orange at Night

Watching an opera or concert under the stars in the world's best-preserved Roman theatre — the 2,000-year-old stage wall still acoustically magnificent — is a once-in-a-lifetime cultural experience.

Loire Valley

Cycling Tours to Villandry

Two days cycling the Loire à Vélo from Tours to Blois — stopping at Villandry's incredible gardens, a Vouvray wine cave, and Amboise for dinner — is France's finest cycling adventure.

French Riviera

Grasse Perfume Masterclass

At the world capital of perfumery — 40 minutes from Cannes — design your own fragrance at a Grasse perfumery using techniques unchanged for four centuries.

Essential France Travel Information

🚆 Getting Around France

France's TGV high-speed rail network is outstanding — Paris to Nice takes 5.5 hrs, Paris to Marseille 3.5 hrs, Paris to Tours 1 hr. Book SNCF tickets well in advance for the best fares. Hire a car for the countryside — Provence, Loire Valley, and the Luberon all reward independent driving.

✈️ Flying to France from Australia

Most Australian flights connect through Dubai, Singapore, or Doha to Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG). Alternatively, fly into Nice (NCE) directly via a connecting hub for a Riviera-first itinerary. Travel time from Australia is approximately 22–24 hours including connection.

📅 Best Time to Visit France

April–June (spring) and September–October (autumn) are ideal — mild weather, manageable crowds, and full cultural programmes. July–August is peak season: beaches and beaches activities are at their best but everything is busier and more expensive. Winter suits Paris (Christmas lights, fewer tourists) but many rural sites close.

💶 Money & Budget

France uses the Euro (€). Credit cards are accepted almost universally. Budget travellers can manage on €80–100/day (market lunch, mid-range dinner, budget accommodation). Mid-range is €150–250/day. Luxury France — Michelin restaurants, château hotels — is unlimited upward. Eating lunch at restaurants instead of dinner saves significantly.

🗣️ Language

French is the language everywhere — even basic phrases (bonjour, merci, s'il vous plaît) earn genuine warmth from locals who appreciate the effort. English is widely spoken in Paris, Nice, and tourist areas throughout. Outside cities, a phrasebook or translation app is useful. Google Translate's camera mode handles menus instantly.

🏨 Accommodation Tips

Book Paris hotels at least 3 months ahead, and 6 months ahead for July–August anywhere in France. Boutique châteaux-hôtels in the Loire Valley and Provence are outstanding but limited in number — reserve early. For the French Riviera in summer, villa rentals often represent better value and more flexibility than hotels.
