The essentials for this trip.

This is Cooee's only river-cruise format — different shape from our other small-group tours. Up to 156 guests on the ship (vs our usual 16), all-inclusive pricing, unpack once and the towns come to you. Two seasonal variants produce two completely different trips: spring tulips with Keukenhof gardens day-trip, or December Christmas markets across Vienna, Nuremberg, Würzburg and Cologne.

When to go: Two completely different trips depending on when you book. Spring (April-May): tulips at Keukenhof, vineyards in bud, mild 12-20°C, 13-15 hours of daylight. Summer (June-August): peak season, warm 22-28°C, busiest port cities. Autumn (September-October): wine harvest, golden vineyards, fewer crowds. Christmas markets (mid-November through December): cold (1-7°C), short days, but the four ports of Vienna, Nuremberg, Würzburg and Cologne make markets the headline experience — Cooee's most-requested December tour.
Tulip seasonApr–May

Keukenhof gardens day-trip is the spring-only addition — only operates mid-March to mid-May. Mild weather (12-20°C), 13-15 hours of daylight, vineyards greening up, fewer fellow guests than peak summer. Most photogenic spring trip in Europe.

Christmas marketsDec

Cold (1-7°C), short daylight (8 hours), but the four headline ports — Vienna, Nuremberg, Würzburg, Cologne — host four of Europe's most extraordinary Christmas markets. Mulled wine, gingerbread, hand-carved nutcrackers, illuminated old-towns. Sells 6+ months ahead.

★★★★★

Danube river cruise at Christmas — Budapest to Nuremberg over the markets fortnight. The boat was small, the dining was first-class, and our tour director knew every market in every stop. A completely different European experience from summer. We've booked the Rhine for 2026.

★★★★★

Spring departure with the Keukenhof tulip day. Effortless way to see Europe — unpack once, the towns come to you. The ship's chef kept finding regional specialties from each new country. Our most relaxing European trip ever.

From $7,999 pp twin-share. December Christmas-market departures sell 6-12 months ahead — book early for cabin choice. Deposit of 25% confirms your booking. Speak directly to a Brisbane-based river-cruise specialist about cabin tier, balcony upgrade, and pre/post extensions to Prague or Berlin.

07 · Frequently Asked

Specific to this cruise.

Both are extraordinary, just different. Christmas markets (Dec): unique atmosphere, mulled wine, gingerbread, illuminated towns, but cold and short daylight. Spring (Apr-May): tulips, longer days, milder weather, vineyards in bud. If you've never done a Christmas-market trip, December is unmatched — Nuremberg's market has been running since 1628, almost four centuries. If you want comfortable weather and outdoor exploration, April-May with the Keukenhof day-trip is the answer.
Compared to ocean cruise ships, yes. River vessels are ~135-156 guests vs 3,000+ on ocean. The advantage: dock at the centre of every town (no tendering), small enough that you know the crew by Day 3, no formal-night dress codes, included regional wines at every meal, and the dining room seats everyone in a single sitting. Avalon Vista is 135m long — about half the length of an Olympic swimming pool, x4.
Genuinely easy. Most port walking tours are 2-4km on level surfaces in 1.5-2 hours. The ship offers 'gentle walkers' alternatives at every port for those who want shorter distances. All ships are step-free from the gangplank to the dining room. Lift access between all decks. Average traveller age on this tour is 60-78 — manageable across that range.
Yes — and we recommend it on this itinerary specifically because of the Wachau Valley and Rhine Gorge scenic-cruising days. Balcony upgrade typically AU$2,500-4,500 pp depending on departure and cabin location. Cooee blocks balcony allocation 18 months ahead — book early for choice. The luxury suite tier (~$4,995 upgrade) adds extra space, complimentary mini-bar, and butler service.
Yes — both are popular pre-cruise extensions. 3-night Prague pre-cruise from Vienna: from $995 pp (Old Town, Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, transfer to Budapest by train). 3-night Berlin pre-cruise: from $1,295 pp (Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, East Side Gallery; flight Berlin → Budapest). Both designed by Cooee and professionally guided. Christmas-market departures pair particularly well with Prague's Old Town Square markets.
Australian passport-holders need: EU ETIAS authorisation (€7, online, valid 3 years) for the Schengen-area ports — Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Germany, Netherlands are all Schengen. No physical visa required for any country on this itinerary. Passport must be valid for 6+ months beyond your return date. Cooee briefs all entry requirements 90 days before departure.
