The essentials for this trip.
The Turkey-Jordan pairing is Cooee's most-recommended cultural combination — both countries are at their best in the same April-May or September-October window, and the back-to-back Cappadocia hot-air balloon and Petra by candlelight create an unmatched signature pairing. Two visas required (Turkey eVisa, Jordan Pass) — both included in the tour price.
16 days, fully scoped.
Hotel category and meal plan listed for each day. "B" = breakfast, "L" = lunch, "D" = dinner. Days marked ✈ are flight transfers. Days marked ⭐ are signature experiences (the Cappadocia balloon and Petra by Candlelight evening).
Welcome to Turkey. Group transfer from Istanbul (IST) airport to your Sultanahmet hotel — the historic peninsula, walking distance to Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Welcome Ottoman dinner — meze, lamb, baklava, raki.
Hagia Sophia (the Byzantine masterwork, in continuous use for 1,500 years), the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace (the Ottoman court for 400 years), and the Grand Bazaar. Afternoon Bosphorus cruise — the only boat journey that lets you see Asia and Europe at the same time.
Fly Istanbul → Kayseri (1h15), then drive to Göreme in the Cappadocia heartland. Underground city visit — Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı, where early Christians sheltered from Roman persecution (8 levels deep). Cave-hotel check-in.
Pre-dawn 4:30am alarm. Hot-air balloon flight at sunrise — 100+ balloons rise together over the fairy chimneys, one of the most-photographed sunrise scenes in the world. Goreme Open-Air Museum (rock-cut Byzantine churches) afternoon. Free time.
Choice morning: Ihlara Valley (4km gorge walk past 9th-century rock churches) OR Rose Valley (3km easier walk for the iconic chimney views). Pottery workshop in Avanos — wheel-throwing in the centuries-old red-clay tradition. Sunset at Pigeon Valley.
Drive day with cultural stops. Mevlana (whirling dervish) Museum in Konya — the spiritual home of Sufism. Continue to Pamukkale by evening (~5 hours total drive across central Anatolia).
The Pamukkale travertine pools at dawn — white calcium terraces cascading down the hillside (UNESCO-listed). The Roman ruins of Hierapolis above — the necropolis is the largest preserved in Asia Minor. Optional swim in Cleopatra's Pool ($35).
Ancient Ephesus — the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre (24,000 seats), the marble streets where St Paul preached. The most complete Roman ruin in the eastern Mediterranean. Afternoon transfer to coastal Antalya.
Antalya old town and harbour morning — Hadrian's Gate, Yivli Minare, the marina. Afternoon flight Antalya → Istanbul → Amman (one-day transit). Welcome to Jordan in the evening.
Amman citadel and Roman amphitheatre morning. Day trip to Jerash — the best-preserved Roman provincial city anywhere in the world (more intact than anything in Italy). Hadrian's Arch, the oval forum, the Cardo Maximus colonnaded street. Afternoon return to Amman.
Mount Nebo — Moses's view of the Promised Land (you can see Jerusalem on a clear day). Madaba mosaic map (the oldest known map of the Holy Land, 6th century). Afternoon Dead Sea float at the lowest point on Earth (-430m).
Drive south via the King's Highway — one of the world's oldest continuously-used trade routes. Karak Crusader castle stop. Evening: Petra by Candlelight (Mon/Wed/Thu only — we time departures to align). 1,800 candles light the path through the Siq to the Treasury façade. Bedouin music, mint tea, total silence in the canyon.
Sunrise into the Siq — the 1.2km canyon entry to Petra. Treasury, Royal Tombs, the Roman colonnaded street, the Great Temple. Optional Monastery climb (800 stone steps, ~45 minutes up — the most spectacular Petra view, smaller crowds).
Drive south into the desert. 4WD safari into Wadi Rum — Lawrence's Spring (where T.E. Lawrence allegedly bathed during the Arab Revolt), the Khazali Canyon petroglyphs, sunset on Mars-red dunes. Bedouin camp dinner — traditional zarb (lamb buried under hot sand for 4 hours).
Sunrise over the dunes from camp. Drive to Aqaba on the Red Sea coast. Optional snorkelling — the northern Red Sea coral reef ($89). Farewell dinner on the Aqaba harbour with Saudi Arabia visible across the gulf.
Group transfer to Aqaba (AQJ) airport. Onward international — most Brisbane connections via Doha. Or extend with the Israel or Egypt add-ons (see FAQ #5).

Reviews from this exact tour.
Was nervous about being the only solo in the group; within two days I'd made travel friends I still catch up with. The Cappadocia sunrise balloon and Petra by candlelight nights were both everything promised. Cooee's ATAS accreditation made booking feel safe.
Sixteen days, two countries, no down moments. The combination of Cappadocia and Petra back-to-back is brilliantly designed — you get over the wonder of one just in time for the next. Wadi Rum at night was unforgettable.
