Rockhampton doesn't always get top billing on a Queensland itinerary, but a couple of days here is genuinely well spent โ heritage architecture, a national park on the city's doorstep, and an easy run out to the coast if you want to extend the trip.
Day One: The City
Start with a walk through the Quay Street heritage precinct, taking in the sandstone streetscape that's survived largely intact since the gold and pastoral boom of the 1800s. Break for lunch somewhere along the Fitzroy River, then spend the afternoon at the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens โ the heritage glasshouses and Japanese garden are a nice contrast to the CBD's colonial architecture. If you've got energy left, the Dreamtime Cultural Centre is worth an hour to round out the day with Central Queensland's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history.
Day Two: Mount Archer & the Coast
Tackle the Mount Archer Lookout walk in the cooler part of the morning โ the views over the city and out to the Capricorn Coast are worth the climb. In the afternoon, make the roughly 40-minute drive out to Yeppoon for beach time, or continue on to Great Keppel Island if you've got a full extra day up your sleeve.
Worth Knowing
Rockhampton sits almost exactly on the Tropic of Capricorn โ the spire marking the line on the Bruce Highway is a quick, easy photo stop if you're driving through rather than staying.
