Mount Archer National Park rises directly behind Rockhampton's CBD, offering a genuine bushwalking experience without needing to leave the city. A network of trails climbs through eucalypt forest to lookouts over the Fitzroy River and the Capricorn Coast beyond — Mount Archer Lookout is the highest point and the most popular target, reachable on a half-day return walk.
Down at the base of the mountain, the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens have been established since 1869, making them one of the oldest regional botanic gardens in Queensland. Heritage glasshouses, a dedicated Japanese garden, and a small free zoo section make it an easy, shaded stop any time of year.
