Scenic Rim · Gondwana Rainforest
Lamington & O'Reilly's Day Tour
A hundred million years of rainforest, ninety minutes from Brisbane. Lamington National Park protects the world's most extensive subtropical rainforest, and O'Reilly's puts you in its canopy on the famous Tree Top Walk — while our driver handles the mountain road that keeps the hire cars at home.
Gondwana's last great stand
Lamington is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area — forest whose lineage runs back to the ancient supercontinent. Up on the Green Mountains plateau around O'Reilly's, Antarctic beech trees thousands of years old stand in mist, and the birdlife is so tame it lands on you: crimson rosellas, king parrots, bowerbirds, and for the patient, the rare Albert's lyrebird.
The Tree Top Walk's suspension bridges carry you up to 16 metres above the forest floor, and the network of graded walking tracks means everyone finds their level — from the easy Booyong boardwalk to the lookout tracks at Python Rock and Moran's Falls over the Albert River valley.
The only hard part of an O'Reilly's day is the Lamington National Park Road: narrow, winding, and not where you want to be in an unfamiliar car. That's the whole argument for the coach.
How the day runs
-
Morning run to Canungra
Out of Brisbane and into the Scenic Rim, with a morning-tea stop in Canungra, the timber town at the foot of the mountain.
-
Up the mountain to O'Reilly's
The famous winding climb through eucalypt forest into rainforest — valley views opening on every bend, with the driving left entirely to us.
-
Tree Top Walk & rainforest tracks
Free time on the canopy suspension bridges and your pick of graded walks: the gentle Booyong boardwalk, Python Rock lookout or the Moran's Falls track. King parrots and pademelons usually find you first.
-
Canungra Valley on the way home
An afternoon pause in the valley — typically a Canungra Valley vineyard or village stop, confirmed with your booking — before the run back to Brisbane.
Walking is optional and self-paced; the Tree Top Walk and short boardwalks suit most fitness levels. Venue stops are confirmed at booking.
Lamington & O'Reilly's questions
What is the O'Reilly's Tree Top Walk?
A series of suspension bridges strung up to 16 metres above the rainforest floor at O'Reilly's, putting you in the canopy among the birds and epiphytes. It is free to walk, gentle underfoot and one of the easiest ways anywhere to experience Gondwana rainforest from above.
Why is Lamington National Park World Heritage listed?
Lamington protects part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area — the most extensive subtropical rainforest in the world, with ancient Antarctic beech trees and species whose lineage traces back to the supercontinent Gondwana.
Is the drive up to O'Reilly's difficult?
The Lamington National Park Road from Canungra is narrow, winding and famously demanding for unfamiliar drivers — which is exactly why a coach tour is the relaxed way up. Our drivers know the mountain; you watch the valley fall away out the window.
Will we see wildlife at O'Reilly's?
Almost certainly. O'Reilly's is famous for its bold crimson rosellas and king parrots, pademelons grazing the clearings, and regent and satin bowerbirds in the forest. Patient birdwatchers may find the Albert's lyrebird, one of Australia's rarest.
Winter is lyrebird season
June to August is breeding season for the Albert's lyrebird and the mountain air is at its clearest — the best months of the year on the plateau. Call to plan dates for your group.
