Getting to the Whitsundays
The Whitsundays are easier to reach than their remote beauty suggests — two airports, regular island ferries, and the lively gateway town of Airlie Beach a short hop from the water. Here's how the flights, ferries and transfers work in 2026, whether you're heading for the mainland or straight to an island.
Two airports
Whitsunday Coast Airport (Proserpine, PPP), about 40 minutes from Airlie Beach, is served by Jetstar, Virgin Australia and Skytrans — the usual gateway for a mainland stay or an island transfer (note Qantas does not fly here). Hamilton Island Airport (HTI), on the island itself and served by Qantas and Virgin, lets you fly straight to the islands, with ferries onward to the mainland and other islands.
Ferries & the gateway town
The islands are reached by boat or air. Most day tours and sailing trips leave Airlie Beach — the mainland gateway — from Coral Sea Marina and the Port of Airlie. Cruise Whitsundays runs scheduled ferries from the Port of Airlie to Daydream, Hamilton Island Marina and Hamilton Island Airport; Hayman and Long Island are reached by resort launch. Cruise Whitsundays ferries connect the Port of Airlie with Daydream Island, Hamilton Island Marina and Hamilton Island Airport. Hayman and Long Island are reached by resort launch. There are no bridges or roads to the islands.
Airlie Beach — the mainland gateway — is about 1,100 km (12+ hours drive) from Brisbane and about 620 km (7–8 hours) from Cairns, both up the Bruce Highway. Most visitors fly into Proserpine or Hamilton Island rather than drive the full distance.
Not really. If you're island-based, you get around by ferry, buggy or on foot. On the mainland, Airlie Beach is walkable, tours pick up centrally, and the 50-cent Whitsunday Transit bus and transfers cover the rest. A hire car is only handy if you're staying out of town or exploring the mainland hinterland.
Cruise Whitsundays runs scheduled inter-island ferries (Port of Airlie ⇄ Daydream ⇄ Hamilton), and day tours and sailing trips hop between islands and bays. For a special view, scenic flights and seaplanes connect the mainland, the islands and the reef.
